Description
C. A. BAILEY. SPINNING-TOPS.
Patented Sept.18,1877
IN NT ATTORNEYS .UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. BAILEY, OF COBALT, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPINNING-TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,326, dated September 18, 1877; application filed August 10, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAS. A. BAILEY, of Cobalt, in the county of Middlesex, and in the State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spinning- Tops; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a spinningtop, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a side view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section, of my invention.
A represents a metal disk, of suitable dimensions, cast with a handle, B, and arm C extending over the center of the disk, the whole forming a frame in which the top is to spin.
D is the spindle or shaft of the top, having its lower end pointed and placed in a corresponding recess or bearing, a, in the center of the disk A. The upper end of the spindle D is inserted in a hole, b, in the end of the arm C, and is prevented from moving upward by a pin, 01, passed transversely through the hole b above the upper end of the spindle.
The body G of the top may be made in any desired form and size. In the drawing I have shown it made as a bell, and a loose ball, h,
is placed inside of the bell on the base A. This ball runs against the edge of the bell as it revolves around, thus sounding the bell. In the base A is a pin, 2', projecting upward within the bell, which pin prevents the ball from revolving with the bell.
On the inside of the bell there may be cast small teats, so as to strike the ball harder.
I do not confine myself exclusively to a belltop, as the frame or holder may be used with any top made to fit therein.
The top runs or spins in the frame, so that it can be carried in the hand or set down when it is spinning.
The string f is attached to the stem or spindle D, and the top may be revolved backward or forward by pulling out and then letting up on it.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with a spinning-top, the frame consisting of the base A, with recess a, the handle B, and the arm 0, with hole b and pin 01, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the frame A B C with pin 6, the bell-top D G, and the ball h, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of July, 1877.
CHAS. A. BAILEY. Witnesses:
RICHARD P. SELDEN, J. H. STEWART.
