4 Claims. (Cl. 20G-79) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in fastener holders, and has particular relation to a means for maintaining screws, brads or other fastening means in association with articles on display and with which articles the screws or brads are to be sold and used.

An object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive means for holding fasteners in association with articles with which said fas teners are to be subsequently used.

Another object is to` provide a means as indicated and which permits the article to be handled and examined while on display and which means may carry a description of the use for which the article is intended as well as illustrations showing the article in use.

A further object is to provide a simple device which permits supplying the screws or other securing devices as a part of the article andkeeps them with it without requiring the use of a box. Other objects and advantages will become apl parent from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein a satisfactory embodiment of theinvention is shown. However,

`lvl'any articles of commerce `when sold are sold complete with screws, brads or other fastening means to be-.nsed in mounting or applying the articles. Frequently, thearticles and their fasteners are enclosed in boxes and a number of boxes containing the articles are displayed `on open counters. With such arrangements it is not unusual to have the screws or other fasteners in the boxes with the articles and prospective customers opening the boxes to examine the article frequently lose some of the fasteners fromV the box. As a result a person purchasing the article may select a box or container containing the article and an insufficient number of its fasteners.

The present invention provides means whereby an article and its fasteners are held together temporarily in such a manner that the article is exposed for examination and that all of the fasteners are properly located on the article so that a prospective purchaser may see at a glance that the full number of fasteners are contained with the article. Further, the device of the present invention is such that it may bear trade-marks or other identifying data and may also carry a description of the uses of the article as well as illustrations showing how the article may be used. lt is also visible and can be examined without the necessity of opening a box or container.

Referring in detail to the drawing, at 10 is generally indicated a well-known construction of knife Sharpener including side plates 1l between which 'are mounted theusual hard steel discs 12, the latter being mounted on pins 13. From the lower edges of the sides 11 perforated lugs 14 extend and the device is adapted to be secured to a shelf or the like by having screws, brads or other fasteners passed through the perforations in the lugs 14 and into or through the shelf or other supl spaced relation to a pair of its opposite edges as at 16 whereby it is divided into a body portion 17 and a pair of wings 18 capable of being folded against the body portion but normally after once being folded tending to assume positions in angular relationship to the body as suggested by the broken lines in Figs. 5 `and 6. Body portion 17 of the holder is provided with pairs of

19 and 20 and each wing is provided with a pair of perforations 2l.

When the wings are folded over against the body the perforations 21 of the respective wings will register with the respective pairs of

19 and 20 through the body. In assembling the Sharpener 10, the holder 15, and the fasteners or screws 22 for the Sharpener, the Sharpener is disposed with its lugs against vthe body portion 17 of the holder and with the perforations of its lugs in registry with the

perforations

19 and 20 of the holder. Next, the wings 18 of the holder are folded over against the upper surfaces of the lugs 14 into the positions in which said Wings are shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3.

This will bring the perforations 21 in the wing substantially into alignment with the perforations in the lugs 14 and with the perforations in the body portion 1'7 of the holder and the screws 22 are then passed through the perforations in the body 17 of the holder, the perforations in the lugs 14 of the Sharpener and the perforations 21 in the wing. It will be noted that the perforations 21 are somewhat smaller than the perforations in the body of the holder, although not necessarily so, and as the wings tend to assume angular positions with respect to the body of the holder, this action results in the screws being held or clamped by the sides of the openings in the relation described and against casual displacement. s

Since the openings 21 in the wings 18 are relatively small the screw shanks fit rather snugly through such openings and as the wings tend to move into angular relation to the body of the holder or away from the upper surfaces of the lugs 14 the opposite sides of the openings 21 in the wings clamp against the opposite sidesI of the screws or other fasteners as best shown in Fig. 3. Further, if desired, it will be apparent that the perforations 21 in the wings may be extremely small or may be entirely omitted so that the screws or fasteners must be forced through the wings to form their own openings, but it is preferred to punch the openings before inserting the screws.

Figs. 1 and 2 show the holder in operation and it Will be obvious that with the holder applied the knife Sharpener or other object 10 may be fully inspected and -a prospective purchaser will be able to tell at a glance whether or not the complete number of fasteners 22 are with the article. That surface or side vof the body portion 17 of the holder which is loWermost when the holder is in use on the Sharpener presents a relatively large exposed surface on which directions for the use of the article may be printed and on which an illustration showing the article in use may be printed. Further, the trade-mark may be displayed on this surface and a trade-mark and any other desirable 'data'may also be printed on the upper or exposed `article itself is fully exposed for inspection and repeated handling of the article will not serve to dislodge the screws vor lother fasteners. It is lalso to be understood that the holder of the invention may be used in connection with hinges or other varticles 'and that the invention is not limited to a fastener holder applied or to be applied to a knife sharpener.

Having thus set forth the nature of my invention, what I claim is:

l. -I'n combination with an -article having a :pair of spaced openings therethrough for vthe .passage of the -shanks of screw fasteners, a fastener holder of somewhat resilient material and including a body portion and a pair of wing portions foldable over the body portion having a tendency to move to an angular position with respect to the body, said holder arranged with its body portion spanning said pair of openings at one side of said article and with its wing portions over the ends of the openings at the other side of the article, said body and wings having opening in alignment with those in the article, and fasteners passing through said openings in the article, the body portion and the respective wings of said holder and temporarily secured to the article by being clamped against the sides of the openings in the wings due to the tendency of the wings to move to angular relation to the body portion.

2. In combination, an article having a pair of substantially flat attaching lugs extending therefrom and arranged in the same plane and perfcrated for the passage of screw fasteners, a fastener holder, said holder including a relatively stiff body and a pair of wings carried by and foldable against said body and normally tending to move to a position at an angle to the body, said body and wings having perforations arranged to register when the wings are against the body, said body arranged against the same side of each of said lugs with its perforations in register with the perforations in the lugs, screw fasteners eX- tending through said registering perforations in the body and lugs and the perforations in the wings, and said wings yieldingly forcing the opposite sides of their perforations against opposite sides of the fasteners as the wings tend to move to positions at an angle to the body Whereby to temporarily secure the fasteners to the article.

3. In combination, an article having a base provided with openings for passage of screws for securing the -article to a support, a fastener holder including a relatively stiff body portion placed against the under side of said base and wing portions at the side edges thereof folded over the edges of the base so as to lie over the top of the base, said holder being of somewhat resilient material so that the wing portions tend to move back toward their unfolded position, said wing and base portions being provided with openings in alignment with the openings in the base, and a screw. extending through said aligned openings and held therein by binding action against the sides of the openings as the folded portion tends to move toward its unfolded position.

4. In combination, an article having a base provided with openings -for passage of screws for securing the article to a support, a fastener holder Vof cardboard including a body portion placed'against the underside of the base and wing portions at'the sides thereof folded 'over' the edges of the base so .as'to be located above the `top there of and the wings tend to move back toward the unfolded position, said wings and base portion being provided with openings in alignment with the openings in the base, and screws extending through said aligned openings and held therein Aby binding action against the sides of the openings due to tendency of lthe Wings to move toward their unfolded position.
