This invention relates to card indexes and liling systems and it has particular relation to 'indexes or files of the overlapping visible index type.
It has previously been proposed to mount index cards or card holders of the type mentioned in such manner that they may be oscillated or pivoted upon hinge members, or they may be removably mounted upon a wire or other support. This invention is directed to an improved assembly in which the index members are in theform of cards, pages or leaves that cooperate with the index card holders to provide index recording surfaces much greater than the surfaces ordinarily provided on index cards and, at the same time, only a small filing space is required, no greater than that provided for the smaller index cards of conventional form. In fact, the index members are folded into a contracted form and consecutive columns or lines of data which would otherwise require wide spaces are adequately accommodated. This folded construction of index cards is reversible, and is so arranged as to be applicable for. mounting on conventional index card holders, and is maintained thereon as offeetively as though only a conventional unfolded type of card were employed. Also, the improved type of index member may be used individually without utilizing the card holders, and in this case is provided with substantially integral means for attachment to a support.
For a better understanding of'the invention reference may now be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, of which,

Fig. 14 is a fragmentary plan of an assembly of a card holder and an index cardtherefor, illustrating another arrangement embodying the invention; and
Fig. 15 is a cross section takensubstantially along the line XVXV of Fig. 14.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings, a plu- 7 rality of card holders 20 of conventional type are supported in overlapping relation and each has a perforated hinge portion 22, and internesting supporting lugs or strips 23 are secured thereto by means of wire 24. These strips extend beyond the side edges of the card holders and the ends of the strips engage in opposed s1ots 26 formed along the edges of a tray 27 in the usual manner. Each card holder 20 is provided with a transparent celluloid sheath 28 embracing the free so marginal portion and forming a pocket for receiving and retaining the lower edge of a record member 32. Suitable slots 33 at the upper edge portions of each card holder are provided for the purpose of cooperating with the pocket for retaining the record member in proper position with respect to the holder.
Each of the index cards 32 is in a contracted and folded form with a central portion 34 so bent as to form a plurality of separate folds 36, 3'7, 38, 39 and 40 that are folded consecutively in opposite directions. As best shown by Fig.1, reference data can be written'along the horizontal lines 42 and in the columns defined by lines 43 from one edge of the record member to the other continu ously over the several folded portions. It is of' course to be understood that the index card in its folded condition can be removed from the card holder and extended while the data is being applied thereto, or for checking or comparing'the records entered thereon. n
It will be observed that the folded central portion 34 of the record member is narrower than the body portion and that the lower portions of the member beyond the central portion 34 are in the form of flaps or marginal strips 44 that extend into the pocket sheath 28 while the edges of the central folded portions or pages are slightly 7 spaced from the adjacent edges of the sheath@ This type of record member construction pro vides the equivalent record space of a Very wide card or sheet for receiving reference data and after the member has been filled with such data, it can be reused by reversing it and applying additional data on the opposite side in the same manner as that described above.
In the construction shown by Figs. 5, 6 and '7 the same type of card holder 20 as that described above is employed but an index card 46 of different form is provided. In this instance two separate record members 46 are employed each of which is provided with a central portion 47 having folds 48, 49 and 50 therein, although the same number of folds as that provided with reference to the member shown by Fig. 2, may be employed. These r cord members are arranged in contiguous relation with their outer upper corners secured in the slots 33 and their lower flaps 44 disposed in the pocket 28.
In Figs. 8 to 10 an index card 50 of another form is shown which includes a pair of end body portions 52 and 53. and relatively narrow central portion 54 having consecutive oppositely folded portions between three fold lines 56, one central and the others at the edges of portions 52 and 53. In this construction card holders 20, such as those shown by Figs. 1 to 7, are not utilized. On the other hand, the record member 50 is provided on its body portions with upper and lower flaps or marginal. strips 57 and 58, extending beyond the central portion 54. Perforated hinge portions 60 are provided for facilitating hinging of the record member on its marginal strips 57 when a search is being made in a tray containing them so that the record surfaces of a desired card may be exposed to view by hinging the overlying members upwardly. Upwardly and inwardly converging slots 62 and 63 at the outer corners of marginal strips 57 of the body portions 52 and 53, respectively, are adapted to receive cars 64 on the marginal strips 57- of an adjacent underlying recordv member in the manner shown by Fig. 8. A strip 65 having slots 66 therein corresponding to the slots 62 is attached to a supporting and backing sheet 67. or the like, and the consecutive recordmembers are secured with. the ears 64 engagingthe slots 62 and with the lower flap portions 52 and 53 of each record member visible for receiving index references. Also the inner edges of the body portions adjacent the central leaf 54 are detachably secured together by means of interfittingtabs 68 and slots 69. Thus, in the form shown by Fig. '8, continuous recording surfaces for reference data are available over the body portion 52 across. the central portion 54, and across the body portion 53. This record member is reversible and it can be slit along an intermediate line 70 of the central portion, Fig. 9, to form a twomember book-like assembly like that shown by Fig. 13. As shown by Fig. 10 two addi tional folds 56 are provided in the central portion 54 of the record member, thustoextend the capacity of the member which is also adapted to be reversed as well as to be slit as indicated in Fig. 9.
Referring to Figs. 11 and 12, record member 72 having central. narrower portions 73 forming a plurality of. fold portions are provided and are of a construction similar to that shown. by Fig. 10. However, in this construction thebody portions, 74 and 75 that have perforated hinge portions 76. and interfitting slots 78 and tabs 79 are provided with attaching clips 80, each of which is in the form of a bent plate having a cylindrical eye 82 at one end thereof. The other end of the plate is in the form of a relatively narrow tongue 83 extending to the cylindrical eye and normally is adapted to be inserted through slots 84 in the body portions 74 and 75. Record member supports 86 having integral pintles 87 projecting upwardly and then extending longitudinally thereon through the cylindrical eyes 82 are provided adjacent each side of the record members. The pintles 87 pivotally support the several record members in overlapping relation and with the lower edges thereof visible, as shown by Fig. 11. These supports are normally disposed in consecutive edge to edge order within guides 88 of a filing tray 89 and the pintles 87 point toward each other in order that the members may be bent centrally in an outward direction to withdraw the fasteners and the record members from the pintles. It is of course to be understood that the central portion 73 of the record member could be made in the same form as the central portion 54 of the construction shown by Fig. 10..
In Fig. 13 a record member 172 is provided with separate central leaves or record flaps 173 having free edges. Separate body portions 174 and 175 are arranged in edge-to-edge relation or fold-tofold relation at the bases of the flaps and are provided with hinge zones 177. Intel-fitting slots and tabs 178 and 179, respectively, maintain the body portions in edge-to-edge relation from which position they are adapted to be detached and reversed to expose either surface for receiving record data. Slots 184 are formed in the upper edges of the body portion corresponding substantially to the slots 84 and adapted to receive fastening devices, such as strips 80 shown in Figs. 11 and 12, for attachment of the record members supports 86.
In the form of the invention shown by Figs. 14 and 15 cardholders 90 are in the form of strips having perforated hinge portions 92 and supporting and spacing lugs 93 projecting outwardly from the sides of the holder and adapted to be inserted in the channels of a tray such as the channels 26, shown by Fig. 1. Body portions 94 of a record member 95 in folded form are provided with an integral central portion 97 similar to the portions 54 and 73. Upper marginal strips 98 extend beyond the central portion and are provided with key-hole slots 99 in which hollow rivets 100 are detachably disposed. It will be observed that the slots 99 in each of the body portions 94' have narrow portions 101 therein which fit snugly around the shanks of the rivets. These notches are sufficiently small to prevent the disks 102 on the rivets from being drawn through them. These rivets are secured in the lower portion of the card holder 90 and the record member can be released therefrom by outwardly bending an intermediate portion of each body portion 94 of the member between the rivets and withdrawing the member in such manner that the rivet heads pass through the larger portions of the slots 99.
In each of the forms of the invention illustrated, it will be observed that the record receiving portions of each record member have'the fold portions hingeable' at substantially right angles to the hinged mounting thereof and ofthe card holders. Byreason of the fold portions of each record member being of less width than the end sections or attaching portions, the index indicia for records arranged horizontally across each member can be made visible to indicate the position of entries relative thereto oneach fold portion.
, From the foregoing description it will be apparent that several embodiments of the invention are applicable to various types of card holders and that numerous columns of data arranged in tabulated form, or otherwise, can be applied to the record members or leaves and such data is conveniently filed and directly presented in the filing trays. It is desirable to maintain the trays in as small space as possible for convenience in handling or searching the files and this invention facilitates concentration of the data in such mannor that card space having a width of say five inches, will serve for data that would ordinarily require a card having a width of say, ten to twenty inches.
While the above description shows several ways of applying the invention for use with visible indeX equipment having the card holders and record members supported in overlapping offset relation for relative hinging movement to expose the record on any one member and for hinging of the fold portions of a record member when exposed; it is to be understood that the invention may be applied for use in a similar manner with most any form of index equipment where the fold portions of the record member will ordinarily be hinged substantially at right angles to the mounting of the record member on its supporting structure.
