Description

Patented Mar. 27, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE A. H. Rice Company,
Pittsfield, Mass, a company of Massachusetts Application December 31, 1931, Serial No. 584,032
3 Claims.
This invention relates to improvements in identification devices and has particular reference to a color chart employed especially for obtaining the desired color of thread to be used in sewing a particular fabric.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved chart of simple and practical construction, which will facilitate the selection of a desired color of thread to be employed in sewing a certain fabric by matching a piece of said fabric with samples contained in said chart.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detailed description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.
In the drawing-- Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of the color chart constructed in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view of one of the sample mountings employed with the chart;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional View through the chart; and
Figure 4 is a sectional View on the line 44 of Figure 2.
The device of the present invention is especially adapted for use in securing the proper color of thread necessary to match a fabric to be sewn so that there will be no contrast in color when the fabric has been stitched with the selectedthread. To this end, a plurality of samples of fabrics of different colors and various shades of the same color are provided for the chart, which will enable a person to match a particular piece of fabric and thereupon, through suitable identifying indicia, obtain a spool of thread of the desired color.
A practical embodiment of the invention, as shown in the drawing, comprises a base consisting of superimposed layers 5, 6 and 7, the layers 5 and '7 being formed by folding a sheet along the edge 8 and the layer 6 constituting a separate sheet interposed between the first-named layers. In its final form, the edges of the layers opposite the edge 8 may be secured together by a suitable adhesive and provided with apertures 9 permitting insertion of the chart into a loose-leaf binder. The two layers 5 and 7 are provided in order that a plurality of the sample mountings presently to be described may be attached to opposite sides of the base of the chart.
Each of the layers 5 and '7 is provided with series of opposed slots 10 arranged in pairs and 1 associated with one of the slots of each pair and arranged alongside of the same is a sight opening 11 through which identifying indicia upon one of the sample mountings 12 is visible when said mounting is in position on the base. The mounting 12 is preferably made of a strip of flexible material having a short extension 13 at one end and an elongated extension 14 at its opposite end, with the face of the latter extension provided with a character, such as the numeral 15, which will identify the particular color of the sample of fabric 16 on the body of the mounting. This sample 16 may be of any color and, as shown in Figure 4, the same is doubled upon itself and provided adjacent its folded edge with one or more rows of stitches 17 of a matched thread. One of the layers of the fabric is preferably secured to the mounting 12 by adhesive and, if desired, one side of the fabric, such as the outside, may be of a dull luster and the opposite side, which may be viewed by lifting the top layer of the folded sample, may be of a bright luster, thus enabling the user of the chart to match a fabric of a certain color which has either a dull or a bright luster. Each of the mountings 12 is supported upon the base of the chart by inserting the extensions 13 and 14 in the opposed slots 10 of a pair, whereupon said extensions will be interposed between the intermediate layer 6 and either of the outer layers 5 or '7, with the character 20 appearing through the opening 11 associated with said pair of slots.
Alongside of each pair of slots and the associated opening, there is printed or otherwise applied to each of the layers 5 and '7 further identifying indicia in the form of characters, such as the numbers 18, employed to designate the particular drawer of a cabinet or the like in which the spool of thread of the desired color indicated by the character 15 on the sample mounting may be found, thus eliminating the necessity of repeatedly matching the fabric to be used with different spools of thread until the proper color of thread is located.
From the foregoing description, it Will be seen that the invention provides a simple and eflicient means for rapidly matching fabrics with threads and that the use of the sample fabrics 16 facilitates and better enables the user of the chart to obtain an exact match in colors.
What is claimed is:
1. A color chart for determining the color of thread to be used in sewing fabric of predetermined color, said chart comprising a base, a plurality of mountings supported upon said base, a sample of fabric of a predetermined color for each mounting, such sample being folded upon itself and secured along its folded edge to said mounting, with the opposite edges of said sample unattached to said mounting or to each other whereby both sides of the sample may be rendered visible for matching a thread therewith, and cooperating identifying indicia on each mounting and 'on said base for determining the thread which matches the color of said sample and the location of a spool of said thread.
2. A color chart for determining the color of thread to be used in sewing fabric of predetermined color, said chart comprising a base, a plurality of mountings supported upon said base, a sample of fabric of a predetermined color attached to each mounting, said sample being attached to said mounting by being sewed thereto with thread of the properly matched color and cooperating identifying indicia at each mounting carried on said base for determining the thread which matches the color of said sample and the classification of the spool of said thread.
3. A color chart for determining the color of thread to be used in sewing fabric of a predetermined color, said chart comprising a base, a plurality of mountings supported upon said base, a sample of fabric of a predetermined color for each mounting, said sample being provided with one side having a dull finish and the other side having a lustrous finish and being sewed at one edge to said mounting, with the opposite edges of said sample being unattached to said mounting, whereby-both sides of the sample may be rendered visible for matching a thread therewith and cooperating identifying indicia at each mounting carried on said base for determining the thread which matches the color of said sample and the classification of the spool of said thread.
