My present invention relates to boiler settings and has for its object to provide improved and more efiicient means for anchoring the boiler front plates to the boiler setting and also to provide improved metal reenforcements to the boiler setting. The invention is especially applicable to horizontal return tube boilers of the twin or multiple type and, generally stated, the invention consists of the novel devices, combinations of devices and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
Hitherto it has been the common practice to anchor the boiler front plates to the boiler setting by rods or metal anchors extended into or through the re brickwork ofthe boiler setting at places where the temperature is so high that the metal parts are soon crystallized or burned oi and hence fail in their anchoring functions and permit'the boiler front plates to become loose.

My invention provides simple and eiiicient anchoring means for securing the boiler front Vplates .to their properly set positions and in such a way that the metallic anchors will not be destroyed or damaged under most intense heatproduced in the boiler structure. y
A preferred manner of applying the invention to a twin horizontal return tube boiler is illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2'looking from the left toward the right, one of the boilers being shown in full;
"Fig 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of- Fig. 1 looking from the right toward the left; and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The front Wall 4 of the boiler setting as shown and preferably is built up entirely of nre bricks; the side walls thereof are built up of inner layers of nre brick 5 and outer layers of common brick 6; the rear wall is built up of inner layers of fire brick 7 and outer layers of common brick 8; the center wall is built up entirely of rebricks 7; and the bridge walls are built up entirely of'iire bricks'9. The front wall 4 has the customary openings that register with corresponding openings in the cast iron boiler front plates 10. The numeral 11 indicates boiler columns that are (Cl. 11G-4) preferably set into the common brickwork 6 and at their upper ends they are riveted, welded or otherwise rigidly secured to the ends of the horizontal cross beams 12 from'which latter the boiler shells 13 are hung in the usual way by means not shown or necessary for the purpose of this case to particularly consider. The boiler shells 13 are covered by the customary arches 14 which may be of brick, cement or the like.
The structure just above specifically described in connection with the drawings may be assumed to be substantially standard or ordinary construction. In accordance with my invention and as an important element for anchoring the boiler front plates l0 to the boiler setting a flanged anchoring column preferably a roller steel H-column 1 5 is disposed vertically and built into the front wall of the boiler setting in line with the front of the center wall and with its outer `face flush with the outer face of the front wall. The inner edges of the two front end plates 10 are overlapped with the exposed flange of the anchoring column 15 and are rigidly secured thereto preferably by a plurality of nut-equipped bolts 16. f
Anchoring columns 17 preferably in the form of rolled steel channels are applied to the vertical front'corners of the boiler setting and are set llush intoV the fire brick of the front wall 4 so that the outer edges of the front end plates 10 overlap the same and are rigidly secured thereto preferably by a plurality of nut-equipped bolts 18. The outer edges of the anchoring columns 17 preferably are flanged and overlapped with the vertical front edge portions of the outer common brick layers 6 so that these anchor bars serve as an anchor for the outer portions of the front end plates 10 and serve to tie the common brick layers 6 to the fire brick inner layer.
To very securely anchor the anchor columns 17 to the masonry work of the boiler setting, long verticaily spaced horizontally disposed tie-rods 19 are extended through the common brickwork 6 of the side Walls of the boiler setting, outward of the fire brick thereof. The uppermost member 19a of these tie-rods is passed just above the top of the side walls of the boiler setting. At their front ends, the rods 19 and 19a are passed through the anchor columns 17 and are provided outward thereof with nuts 20. At their rear ends, rods 19 and 19a are passed through buckstays 21 and are provided outward thereof with nuts 22. These buckstays 21 are vertically disposed and clamped tightly against the outer surface of the rear wall of the boiler setting. Vertically spaced llo horizontal transversely disposed tie-rods 23 are extended through the common brickwork of the rear wall of the boiler etting and at their outer ends are passed through buckstays 2e and outward thereof are provided with nuts 25. By the tie-rods 23 the buckstays 24 are tightly clamped against the outer surfaces of the side walls of the boiler sei ing. rlhe buckstays 21 and 24, as shown, are ci rolled steel channels, but they might of course, take other forms. At the sides of the boiler setting are vertically disposed buckstays 26 which, as shown, are anchored to the tie-rods 19 by nut-equipped hook-shaped bolts 27.
The buckstays 25 at their extreme upper ends and above the boiler setting are tied together by a crosstie bolt 28, the ends of which, as shown, are passed through lugs 29 welded, rivetted or otherwise rigidly secured to the upper ends of said buckstays 26. At their extreme outer ends, tierod 28 is provided with nuts S0 tightened against the lugs 29. Buckstays 26, as shown, are made up each of a pair of rolled steel channels set back to back and slightly spaced. Of course, said buckstays may take other forms.
A buckstay 31 :'s disposed vertically against the outer surface of the rear wall of the furnace in line with the center wall l and the upper end thereof is tied to the upper end of the anchor beam 15 by a longitudinal tie-rod 32 that is ex tended above the boiler setting between the boilers and is passed through lugs 33 and 34, respectively, on the upper ends of the said buckstay 31 and anchoring beam l5. At its ends, tie-bolt 32 provided with nuts 35 that are clamped against the lugs and 3d. The lower end of buckstay 31 may be anchored in the usual or any suitable way.
In the above arrangement, it is evident that the tie-rods 19 and i9@L very firmly anchor the corner anchor bars 17 to the masonry work oi the boiler setting and, moreover, that they are applied outward of the relatively hot nre brick inner portion of the wall and in the relatively cool outer layer ci common brick and hence are protected against the most intense heat and are kept far enough away from the hightemperatures to prevent the same from being burned oir or crystallized. The centrally disposed anchoring column 15 is also kept quite well away from the intense heat oi' the boiler and has faces exposed for thek radiation oi heat and, moreover, is of such rigid structure that it will not be damaged by the heat applied thereto.
In this way by the means above described, the boiler front plates are anchored to the said members 15 and 17 and hence permanently secured to the iront wall oi' 'the boiler setting in such way that they cannot become loose, warped or crowded from their properly set positions. Indirectly the outer edges of the said boiler front plates lo are anchored clear back to the rear buckstays 21. Also the very means used to anchor the corner anchor columns 1'? to the boiler setting reenforce and strengthen the side walls of the boiler setting.
From what has been said, it should be understood. that the arrangement described is capable of various modifications within the spirit of the invention herein disclosed. Where the boilers are assembled in a battery of more than two, then there would, oi course, be more thanrone so-called center or parting wall l and there would be a correspondingly increased number of anchoring columns 15, to wit: one for each parting wall. For illustration, ii there were four boilers in the battery, there would be three parting walls with an anchoring column 15 set into each thereof and for the two intermediate boilers, their iront end plates would be anchored to lianges oi' adjacent anchoring columns 15, but in such arrangements the outer edges of the out er front end plates 1G would be anchored to the corner anchoring bars.
What I claim is:
l. ln a boiler setting having side, intermediate, front and rear walls, a vertically disposed intermediate anchoring column set into said front wall in line with said intermediate wall, Vertically disposed outer anchoring columns anchored to the front end corners of the boiler setting, and boiler iront plates rigidly secured to said intermediate and outer anchoring columns.
2. In a boiler setting having side, intermediate, front and rear walls, a vertically disposed intermediate anchoring column set into said front wall in line with said intermediate wall, vertically disposed outer anchoring columns anchored to the front end corners of the boiler setting, boiler front plates rigidly secured to said intermediate and outer anchoring columns, and anchoring rods built into outer portionsv ofthe side walls of said boiler setting and securely anchoring said outer anchoring columns to the boiler setting.
3. The structure defined in claim 2 in further combination with vertical buckstays applied to the outer sides of said boiler setting, and anchors connecting said buckstays to said anchoring rods.
i. The structure defined in claim 2 in further combination with buckstays applied to the rear wall of the boiler setting and to which said anchoring rods are further anchored.
5. The structure defined in claim 2 in which said intermediate anchoring bar is an H-column embedded in the front wall of the boiler setting with one outer face exposed at the front of the boiler for the connection thereto of said boiler front plates.
6. In a boiler setting having front, rear and side walls, said side and rear walls comprising:
inner layers of nre brick and outer layers of common brick, anchoring columns applied vertically to the front corners of the boiler setting and lapping over the common brick of the side walls thereof,Y boiler front plates anchored to said anchor' columns, and anchor rods connected to said anchor columns and extended longitudinally through the outer common brick layer of said side walls and anchored therein.
'7. 1n a boiler setting comprising front, rear, intermediate and side walls, said side walls comprising inner layers of re brick and outer layers of common brick, an anchoring column vertically disposed and embedded in said front wall in line with said intermediate wall, outer anchoring columns vertically applied at the front corners or" the boiler setting and lapping the common brick oi the outer side walls thereof, and boiler iront plates rigidly secured to said intermediate and outer anchoring columns.
8. In a boiler setting comprising front, rear, intermediate and side walls, said side walls comprising inner layers or re brick and outer lay-l ers of common brick, an anchoring column vertically disposed and embedded in said front Wall in line with said intermediate wall, outer anchoring columns vertically applied at thefront corners of the boiler setting and lapping the common brick of the outer side walls thereof, boiler iront plates rigidly secured to. said interchored, buckstays applied to the side Walls ot said furnace, and metallic anchors connecting said buckstays to said anchoring rods.
11. The structure dened in claim 8 in further combination with buckstays applied to the outer surface of the rear Wall of the boiler setting and to which said anchoring rods are further anchored, an intermediate buckstay applied to the rear wall of said boiler setting and a tie-rod connecting the upper portion of said rear, intermediate buckstayto the upper portion of said intermediate anchoring column.
