Description

Patented Mar. 20, 1934 GARMENT Charles Oathout, Shaker Heights, Ohio, as-
sign-or to The Kaynee Company, Cleveland, Ohio, a corporation of Ohio Application February 2,
6 Glaims.
This invention relates to improvements in the manufacture of garments and, more particularly, to an improved placket construction for sleeves and other garment members where plackets are customarily used.
In forming a placket in a garment as, for example, in sleeves, a slit or opening is made in the sleeve running above the cuff and a facing strip is then sewed over one edge of this opening on both sides so as to cover the edge. The facing runs somewhat beyond the crotch of the opening and is sewed to the sleeve on the other side of the opening adjacent such crotch. This part of the placket. constitutes a weak point in garments as previously constructed, since any force which detaches the facing adjacent the crotch quickly results in the cloth being torn at this point. The present invention contemplates a structure which is very much stronger'at the point of the placket opening than'has previously been the case.
Accordingly, it is an objectof the presentinvention to provide a placket for garments which is stronger than those previously known Another object of the invention is to provide a placket which has increased strength and which is also neat in appearance. To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the meanshereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain structure embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various structural forms in which the principle of the invention may be used: 7
In said annexed drawing:
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of a sleeve embodying the improved placket; Fig. 2, is a view in elevation of the placket slightly enlarged and 8. One edge of this opening is covered by a facing 9 which extends on both sides of the edge of the opening and extends some distance beyond the crotch 11 of the opening terminating in the conventional point 12. The otheredge of the opening 8 is also bound by a narrow binding strip 1932, Serial No. 590,415
tending along but one side thereof, are brought together, the edges of the placket opening being crowded together at the crotch to start a slight overlap, and the facing and strip are sewed to each other and to the sleeve material so as to constitute a strong, securely attached garment structure. The facing 9 is made comparatively wide as compared with the binding strip 13 and extends a considerable distance beyond the associated edge of the placket opening so as to mask the opening and the binding strip 13. A neat and pleasing appearance for the structure is thus attained.
As seen in Fig. 5, it will be noted that several thicknesses of cloth are thus produced at various junction points in the placket where the various parts constituting the placket come together. This increases the strength of the garment. However, the most important point where strength is required is that of the crotch 11 of the placket opening and, at this point, great strength has been provided by the present construction due to the fact that the binding strip 13 is folded over upon itself at this point so that four thicknesses of the binding strip as well as two thicknesses of the sleeve material, and two thicknesses of the facing 9 may be sewed together to constitute the bar 15. As a result, this bar must first be broken or torn before a run can start which, once started, would quickly tear through the facing and sleeve to render the latter useless. Such a construction is particularly important in childrens garments such as boys blouses which are subject to unusual strains.
While the present invention has been described above more particularly with respect to a sleeve placket, it will be obvious that the invention is equally applicable and useful wherever a placket is called for in a garment.
Other forms may be employed embodying the I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:
1. In a garment, a sleeve comprising a cuff, a placket opening in said sleeve adjacent said cuff, a facing folded over one edge of said opening, and a binding piece folded over the other edge of said opening and continued over the inner edge of said facing, said facing and binding piece being sewed in place.
2. A garment member comprising a placket opening, a relatively wide facing folded over one edge of said opening, and a relatively narrow binding piece folded over the other edge of said opening and continued over the inner edge of said facing, said facing and binding piece being sewed in place.
3. A garment sleeve comprising a placket opening, a facing folded over one edge of said opening, a binding piece longer than said facing folded over the other edge of said opening for a part of its length and folded over the inner edge of said facing for the remainder of its length, said facing and binding piece being sewed in place to constitute a bound placket opening.
4. A garment member comprising a placket opening, a relatively wide facing folded over one edge of said opening and extending beyond the crotch of said opening, a relatively narrow binding piece folded over the other edge of said opening, bent upon itself at the crotch of said opening, and folded over the inner edge of said facing, said facing normally masking said placket opening and said relatively narrow binding piece, said facing and binding piece being attached in place.
5. A garment member comprising a placket opening, a facing covering one edge of said opening and extending beyond said edge toward the other edge of said opening, a binding strip covering said other edge of the opening and being extended around the crotch of said opening to cover the inner edge of said facing, the co-extensive portions of said facing and binding strips being sewed in place to constitute a multi-ply reinforcement at the margin where said facing is attached to said garment member.
6. A garment member comprising a placket opening, a facing folded over one edge of said opening, a binding strip folded over the other edge of said opening, continued around the crotch of said opening, and folded over the inner edge of said facing, said facing and binding strip being sewed in place on said placket opening, and said opening being sewed across both arms of said binding strip adjacent said crotch to constitute a bar for said placket.
