Description
June 19, 1934. c. E. OATHOUT GARMENT Filed April 3, 1933 INVEN TOR. (flar/cs CF. OafFcoaf ATTORN Patented June 19, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GARMENT Charles E. Oathout,
Shaker Heights, Ohio, as-
Application April 3, 1933, Serial No. 664,072
4 Claims.
The present invention relates to a garment of strength and wear-resisting structure, and, more particularly, to childrens garments having reinforcing means for retaining buttons and the like.
In the manufacture of articles of childrens apparel, such as boys blouses, difiiculty is experienced in so attaching buttons or other fastening means that these will not be pulled or torn I from the garment within a reasonable period by the hard usage to which childrens clothing is subjected. It is, accordingly, an object of the present invention to provide a garment having improved means for retaining fastening means thereon. A further object of the invention is to provide a garment having a reinforcing element which securely engages buttons and the like. To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly I pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing and the following description set forth in detail certain structure embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various structural forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing:
Fig. 1 is a view of a section of a blouse em: bodying the improved construction; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view on an enlarged scale of the reinforced construction of the invention; Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but taken from the opposite side of the garment; Fig. 4 is a section taken along the line 4, 4 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 5 is a section taken along the line 5, 5 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing, a section 6 forming a front half of a blouse, for example, is provided with a facing '7 along the finished edge 8 of the garment. This facing is turned under at either side, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and is sewed to the under side of the garment by lines of stitching 9 and 11. Within one of the folds, such as fold 12, is enclosed a piece of strong cord 13 which may extend the full length of the garment or ,be co-terminous with the portion carrying buttons. The cord 13 is securely enclosed in the facings 7 when this latter is sewed to the piece 6 by means of the rows of stitching 9 and 11.
The cord 13 serves as a strong reinforcement runnning for a considerable length adjacent a surface of the garment and to which a plurality of buttons or other fastening devices may be attached, the strength of the cord being such that f the loops of thread 15 cannot pull out of the garment as is the case where such loops are merely passed through the various thicknesses of cloth which may lie under the button. By the use of the present invention, it is practically imposm f sible to tear a button loose from a garment, if a button of proper strength is chosen and sufficient thread used for joining the cord and the button. The cord shown in the drawing may obviously be replaced by other reinforcing materials of proper strength and characteristics, these being disposed in a similar manner to that shown. Also, the cord or other reinforcing means need not necessarily be enclosed in a facing, such as the facing '7, but may be otherwise attached 30. f
Other modes of applying the principle of my 90. E
invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the structure herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:
1. In a garment, a facing, a reinforcing member enclosed in said facing and securely fastened therein, fastening means for holding said garment on the body of the user positioned opposite said facing, and loops passing through said fastening means and encircling said reinforcing member.
2. In a garment, a facing, a cord enclosed in said facing and securely sewed therein, buttons positioned along said facing on the opposite side of said garment, and loops of thread passing through said buttons and encircling said cord.
3. In a garment, a facing, a cord enclosed in no said facing throughout its length and securely sewed therein, buttons positioned along said cord on the opposite side of the garment thereto, and loops of thread passing through a button and encircling said cord.
CHARLES E. OATHOUT.
