March 20, E934. c, O BRORBY CLOTHESLINE TIGHTENER AND POLE HOLDER Filed Dec. 1, 1955 I, iuui (In? .rrkmlllll //\/VENTO A TTORNEYSA Patented Mar. 20, 1934 CLOTHESLINE TIGHTENER AND POLE HOLDER 4 Claims.
My invention relates to clothes line tighteners and pole holders. An object of the invention is to provide a device of this character by means of which the line may be quickly tightened and which will hold the pole or prop securely in place so that it cannot slip and permit the clothes to drop on the ground. A further object is to provide a device which is simple and inexpensive to construct and at the same time very efiicient for the purpose intended.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof and the novel features embodied in my inventive idea will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing which shows two slightly different forms in which my invention may be embodied-Fig. 1 is an elevational view showing the device applied in use. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is an elevational sectional View. Fig. 4 is an elevational view of the second form of the device. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the latter form.
Referring to the construction shown in the drawing, the reference numeral 10 designates a pole or prop upon the upper end of which is mounted a body member preferably in the form of a metal cap. This cap as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 is cylindrical and is designated 12 while in Figs. 4 and 5, the cap is rectangular and is designated 12. Otherwise the two constructions are the same. The cap at one side thereof is provided with a downward extension 14 which has a hole 16 through which a screw or other fastener may be inserted for securing the cap to the pole. One side of the cap carries an inverted U-shaped arm 18 while the other side carries an arm having an upwardly inclined portion 20, a lateral portion 22 and a downwardly inclined portion 24, the latter terminating in a hook 26. As shown, the two arms are constructed from rod-like material or wire and may be formed from one continuous piece of material extending through the top of the cap and secured thereto in any suitable manner.
It will be understood that the device is used in connection with a clothes-line 28 fastened at the two ends thereof. In use, the clothes-line is placed between two branches of the inverted U-shaped member 18 and the pole or prop 10 is turned in such manner as to wind the slack in the line upon the two branches of the member 18 as shown in Fig. 1 As viewed in this figure, the line is then passed in front of the member 20 and behind the member 24 and. then engaged with the hook 263. It will be apparent that the device has a two fold function since it not only serves as a means for tightening the line, but the tightened line holds the prop in place and prevents it from slipping sidewise and letting the clothes down to drag on the ground. This latter function is very efiiciently performed since the hook 26 is rigidly connected with the cap portion of the device so that when the line is tight, it is impossible for the line to escape from the hook no matter how much the clothes are blown about by the wind.
I claim: I
1. A clothes line tightener and pole holder comprising a body member adapted to be secured to the upper end of the pole, an inverted U- shaped member secured to one side of said body member, an arm extending outwardly and rigidly from the opposite side of said body member, and a hook formed integrally with the outer end of said arm.
2. A clothes line tightener and pole holder comprising a cap adapted to be secured to the upper end of the pole, an inverted U-shaped member secured to one side of said cap, an arm extending outwardly and rigidly from the opposite side of said cap. and a hook formed integrally with the outer end of said arm.
3. A clothes line tightener and pole holder comprising a cap adapted to be secured to the upper end of the pole, an inverted U-shaped member secured to one side of said cap, an arm extending outwardly and rigidly from the opposite side of said cap, said arm consisting of an upwardly inclined portion, a lateral portion and a downwardly inclined portion, and a hook formed integrally with the outer end of said last mentioned portion.
4. A clothes line tightener and pole holder comprising a cap adapted to be secured to: the upper end of the pole, a rod-like member passing through and secured to said cap, an inverted U-shaped member formed on one end portion of said rod-like member, the other end portion constituting an outwardly extending arm, and a hook formed integrally with the outer end of said arm.
