This invention relates to a clothes pole and cap therefor.

A primary object of this invention is the provision of a clothes pole of improved design characterized by a cap which will prevent the ingress of water into the interior of the tubular pole, and consequent rusting thereof.

An additional object of the invention is the provision of an improved hook on such a cap adapted to facilitate the supporting of clothes lines from the device.

A further object of the invention is the provision of such a cap and clothes pole which may be readily assembled, and which will be reliable and efficient in use and relatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture.

Still other objects will in part be obvious and in part be pointed out as the description of the invention proceeds, and shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of this inventive concept.

Figure 1 is a side view, partially in section and partially in elevation, certain parts thereof being broken away, disclosing one form of the instant invention.

Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views of the drawings.

Referring now to the drawings, the pole of the instant invention, generally indicated at I0, is preferably of tubular construction, and may be formed of metal or other suitable material. The upper extremity of the pole I is threaded, as at H, to accommodate corresponding internal threads l2 on a cap member generally indicated. at I3. The cap member l3 includes a top closure portion I4 and a flange I5 about the base thereof, the flange being provided with indentations IE on opposite sides thereof to accommodate hooks generally indicated at H. The two oppositely disposed hooks H are preferably formed from a single blank of heavy wire or similar material and include a transverse portion l8 extending across the top M of the cap and two oppositely disposed downwardly depending shank portions H! which extend through the indentations of channels 3 in such manner as to conform to the exterior configuration of the cap.

It may here be pointed out that the cap is, of necessity, of greater external diameter than the diameter of the pipe or pole l0, and hence the depending shank portions 19 are seated outwardly a slight distance from the pole. The space thus formed between the portions I9 and pole I permlts the latter to be hung on a clothes line, not shown, when the pole is not needed to prop up the clothes line.

The depending shank portions l9 terminate in outwardly flared oppositely disposed loops 20, the interior of the loops forming seats for a clothes line or the like, which loops extend into upwardly and inwardly inclined hook portions 2| which terminate in outwardly flared guide portions 22 at a point substantiall adjacent the top of the transverse portion I8, The outwardly flared guide portions serve to facilitate the insertion of a clothes line or the like into the loops formed within the bends 20, while the inwardly inclined hook portions 2! serve through the natural resiliency of the wire or the like to provide a restricted portion of the hook which precludes accidental disengagement of the clothes line.

From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided an improved clothes prop which may be readily manufactured of piping or similar material, provided with a cap which precludes the ingress of moisture into the end of the pole, which cap is provided with hook-shaped portions designed to hold and support the clothes line with a minimum of effort and difiiculty.

Obviously, the lower extremity 25 of the pole may be constructed in any desired manner, and may be left open, or closed with a. cap or plug, or provided with a suitable pointed tip or other device as may be necessary or desirable.

It will also be seen that there is herein provided a novel device which accomplishes all the objects of this invention, and others, including many advantages of great practical utility and commercial importance.

As many embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment hereinbefore shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

Iclaim:

1. In a cap for a clothes pole including an inverted cup-shaped member, said member having a bottom and a substantially cylindrical side wall terminating in a free edge, means mounting said member on one end of a clothes pole, with said side wall concentrically disposed about said clothes pole; the improvement comprising at least one hook member, said hook member including a substantially straight portion extending longitudinally of said pole and secured to said cupshaped member, said portion extending downwardly of said side wall of said member in laterally-spaced relation to said pole, a laterally-directed loop formed on the lower end of said portion. and an upwardly-directed portion of said hook extending upwardly from the outer end of said loop in laterally-spaced relation to said firstnamed portion of said hook.

2. In a cap for a. clothes pole, including an inverted cup-shaped member including a closed end and a substantially cylindrical side wall terminating in a free edge, and means mounting said member on one end of a clothes pole with said side wall concentrically disposed about said pole; the improvement comprising a radially outwardlydirected flange formed on said free edge of said member, said flange being formed with at least one longitudinally-extendin groove therethrough, at least one clothes line-engaging hook, said hook including a substantially straight shank portion, means mounting said portion on said cap, said shank portion including a lower end extending through said groove and downwardly along said pole in laterally-spaced relation thereto, said lower end terminating in a laterally-directed loop, said loop terminating in an upwardly-directed hook portion, said hook portion being laterally spaced from said shank portion and inwardly inclined thereto.
