UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK W. VANCIL, OF J OPLIN', MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR OF EIGHTY-FIVE PER CENT TO H. R. VALFER, OF J'OPLIN, MISSOURI.
AUTOMOBILE MAP CONTAINER.
Application filed September 29, 1924. Serial No, 740,544.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK W. VANoIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Joplin, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automobile Map Containers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an automobile map container, and the object ofmy invention is the construction of a simple and efficient device for holding a map, and which device can be readily attached to an automobile, preferably to the windshield thereof.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, my invention comprises certain combinations, constructions, and arrangement of parts as will be illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
111 the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my device, showing the same mounted on a windshield of an automobile.
Figure 2 a longitudinal sectional view of my device.
Figure 3 is a sectional View taken on lines 8-3, Figure 2, and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4 is a view in elevation of the roller of my device.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the windshield upon which my device 2 is mounted.
The device 2 comprises a semi-cylindrical container 3 on the ends of which are positioned caps 4. A spring clip 5 is fastened to the container 3, whereby the device 2 is supported or attached to the windshield 1..
The caps at are removably mounted upon r said container and are provided with square apertures into which the squared ends (5., of shaft extends.
Rotatably mounted on shaft 7 is hollow roller 8. A coil spring 9 has one end fixedly attached to shaft 7, and its other end is likewise attached to roller 8 (Figure 2).
The hollow, metallic roller 8 has fastening spurs (or clips) 9 struck out from its body; these spurs 9 are provided to fasten a map 10 to the roller; said spurs permit quick attaching, or detaching of maps, or the, like, from the roller 8.
Suitable advertising space is provided upon the map 10, at 11.
The spring 9 serves to return (rewind) the map into the container after it has been alterations or changes as shall fairly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is: A map holder comprising an elongated container including a body open at its ends and along its under side and having its walls converging towards its open under side, the free side edge portion of one wall being curved away from the other wall, a shaft extending axially in said body and having flattened end portions removable caps for the open ends of said body having flanges snugly fitting upon the same and conforming to the transverse contour thereof to hold the caps against rotation upon the body, said caps having openings snugly receiving the flattened end portions of said shaft to mount the shaft and prevent rotation thereof, a map carrying roller rotatably mounted upon said shaft within said body, a rewind spring coiled about said shaft with one end secured to the shaft and its other end secured to said roller, and a supporting hook secured to said body at one side thereof midway its length and extending upwardly therefrom, said hook being of sufiicient width to prevent tilting of the container when suspended from a windshield frame by the hook.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
FREDERICK W. VANCIL.
