This invention relates to a combined unitary valve centering and jumping device. for use in connection with the grinding of valves wherein the va1ve-stemhas an enlarged lower end. i
The primary object of the invention is to provide as a single unitary structure a means or temporary hearing or bushing for centering the valve in association with means for raising the valve as the pressure thereon is removed to jump the valve in the grinding operation; to provide a pair of semi-cylindrical cooperating centering bushings permanently pivotally connected together by means of a pair of yokes or straps; to
the axis of the unit as a whole; to provide means irrespective of the bushing sections and irrespective of the pivot pins for connecting the yoke bars or plates to each other; and to provide means limiting the movement of the unit as a Whole downward in the bore of the engine block.
In some makes of automobiles, particularly the Model A Ford, the valve-stem is guided by a split bushing and has an enlargement, such as F, at, its lower end so tnatin order to entirely remove the valve and its stem from the engine block it is necessary to entirely remove the split bushing. This makes the valve grinding operation tedious and somewhat difiicult evenfor the experienced mechanic because of the need to remove the bushings every time the valve is inspected to see if the grinding operation has been completed and for this reason there is a demand for a simple unitary device which may be used as a centering means, which may be easily withdrawn and reinserted without appreciable risk of the dropping of any part thereof, and also which shall have a spring means for jumping the valve to facilitate the grinding operation.
The present invention has been developed with the foregoing considerations and objects in View.
In this application we show and describe only the preferred embodiment of our invention simply by way of illustration of the practice thereof, as bylaw required. However, we are well aware that our inventionis capable of other and different embodiments and. that the various details thereof may be modified in a number of difierent ways, all without departing from our said invention; therefore, the drawing, and description herein are to be considered as merely illustrative and not as exclusive.

Referring now in detail to the drawing, A, designates the engine block; B, the valve port or chambers; C, the valve-stern bushing bore; D, the valve-stem having the valve E carried on the top thereof and having its lower end provided with an enlargement or cone F as illustrated.
Preferably our invention will be embodied in a device having two externally semi-cylindrical internally longitudinally centrally grooved members 1, permanently associated together in such manner as to have relative movement with relation to each oth r whereby their adjacent faces may be moved apart to permit the passage be. tween them of the enlargement F. Such association may be by any suitable means. In the embodiment illustrated such association is by means of two yoke bars or plates extending pref erably parallel to each other and respectively engaging the outer faces of both of the members 1 and their laterally olilset shoulders 1a, so that the shoulder la of each member 1 is interposed between the respective end portions of the plates 3 and a pivot pin 2 extending through each of the registering end portions of the plates 3 and the respective intervening laterally offset portion 1a of the respective members 1 serves to pivotally connect the members 1 together for swinging movement about their respectitve pivot pins 2 toward and from each other, and the ends of the pins 2 being upset or riveted over establish a permanent inseparable connection between these parts.
Preferably each member 1 will be formed with a radially extending enlargement or stop shoulder 1 to engage upon the upper face of the bottom of the valve port or bore B to limit the down ward movement of the bushing members 1, that is of the device as a whole, in the bore C. Said shoulders will preferably be semi-annular so as to together constitute an annular shoulder, but this is not of any particular importance and said shoulder or shoulders may be of any shape and area so long as they function to the desired end.
Each said member 1 will preferably be provided with a stop shoulder lb to engage the opposed lower edge of one of the yoke bars 3 when the said member 1 has been swung about its pivot pin 2 to the point where said member extends parallel to the axis of the unit as a whole, whereby rigidity of the device or unit as a whole when applied about the valve-stem D with the edges of the members 1 in engagement, will be greatly increased.
A jumper spring 4 will preferably be provided and will preferably be permanently associated with some one or more of the other parts of the device in such manner as to be interposed between the valve and the upper portions of the members 1. Preferably said spring will be connected in some suitable manner to one or more of the yoke plates or bars 3, preferably being connected to both of said plates or yoke bars 3. Prefthe spring and connect the same to each of said yoke bars or plates 3 and the upper edge portion of each said plate or yoke bar 3 adjacent each side of the lug 5 and in transverse registry with each other is out out as at 6, as shown inFigure .4, to accommodate a portion of the circle of the lower helix of the spring to thereby center and brace the yoke bars or plates 3 with respect to each other and irrespective of the pivot pins 2. This construction results not only in bracing and centering the plates 3 with relation to each other but also serves to center and rigidly hold the spring 4 in position and results in a very desirable structure of a firm and lasting nature.
Of course the inner opposed faces of the mem- ,bers 1 will be formed with opposed longitudinally extending grooves semi-cylindrical in cross section and together defining a cylindrical bore of such size as to snugly receive and accommodate the valve-stem D.
While the provision of the spring 4 for jumping the valve is highly desirable, obviously it is not essential to the centering operation and it may be dispensed with while still retaining our invention, considered in its broader aspects, this ,being illustrated in Figure 4.
In the use of the instant invention the valvestem D is inserted downward through the helical spring 4, until it engages the upper end faces of the members 1, as illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 2, when the valve stem D will be moved further downward through the device of this invention until the spring 4 engages the underface of the valve E. All of this may be accomplished by simply taking hold of the spring a between the thumb and forefinger of one hand, and with the other hand placing the enlarged end F of the valve-stem D against the upper ends of the members 1 and releasing the valve-stem when its Weight will be sufficient to spread the members 1 to permit the passage of the valve-stem or if not a slight shove will sufice. With the device thus applied to the valve-stem, the members 1 will be swung toward each other by hand to lie parallel to and against the valve-stem D with their edges in engagement when the valve-stem D with the unitary device of this invention applied thereto is to be inserted in the engine block, as illustrated in Figure l.
The adjacent portions of the upper end faces ofthe members 1 may be downwardly curved as illustrated in all the figures to give a cam action between the lower end of the enlargement F of the valve-stem D and the upper ends of said members 1 during the insertion of said stem D through the unitary device of this invention.
Also the lower end portions of the bushing members 1 may be downwardly and radially inwardly beveled to give a frusto conical contour to the lower portion of the compo-site split bushing to facilitate the enterance of the latter into the upper end of the bore C in'the engine block, all as is obvious.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to'secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A valve-stem guide and'valve lifter for use in grinding valves and comprising a plurality of relatively movable longitudinally extending sections through which the stem of the valve to be ground is guided, said sections cooperating to together constitute a guiding body ofa composite cross sectional external contour having portions lying on diiferent points of a circle concentric with the axis of the body and being insertable into the bore of the engine block, means for connecting said sections together for relative movement in a transverse direction to permit the passagebetween them of an enlarged end portion of the guided valve-stem, said means comprising a pair of yoke bars applied on opposite sides of the upper portions of said sections and with the r extreme end portions in transverse registry and pivot pins extending through said end portions and the respective intervening upper end portions of the respective sections, said sections being formed with downwardly presented arcuate, radially extending stop shoulders adapted to engage the engine block. adjacent the bore thereof, and stop lugs formed on said sections respectively and so positioned as to engage one of said yoke bars when its respective section shall have been moved into positionparallel to the axis of the device as a Whole, in combination with a helical spring secured to the upper portion of each said yoke bar and adapted to engage the lower face of the Valve, each said yoke bar being formed with a lug bent around the lower helix of the spring, to firmly secure said yoke bars and spring together each yoke bar having its upper edge portion cut out equi-distantly on opposite sides of said lug to accommodate an 'arcuate portion of said lower helix in said out portions and to afford a seat for the lower helix. of the spring on the upper edge portions of said yoke bars respectively, andthe extremeouterend walls of said out out portions serving to limit the radially inward swinging movement of the yoke bars by their engagement with said lower helix and irrespectiveof; the intervening portions of said sections. a t

A: valve-stem guide and valve lifter for use in grinding valves and comprising a, plurality of relatively movable longitudinally extending sections through which the stem of the valve to be ground is guided, said sections cooperating to together constitute a guiding body of a composite crosssectional external contour having portions lying, on different points of a circle concentricwith the axis of the body and being insertable into the bore of the engine block, meansfor connecting said sections together for relative movement in a transverse direction to permit the passage between them of an ,enlarged end portion of the guided valve-stem, said means comprising a pair of yoke bars applied. on opposite sides of the upper portions of said sections and with their extreme end portions in, transverse registry, and pivot pins extending through saidend portions and the respective intervening upper end portions: of the respective sections, said sections be ing formed with downwardly presented arcuate,
radially extending stop shoulders adapted to engage the engine block adjacent the bore thereof, and stop lugs formed on said sections respectively and so positioned as to engage one of said yoke bars when its respective section shall have been moved into position parallel to the axis of the deviceas a whole, in combination with a helical spring secured to the upper portion of each said yoke bar and adapted to engage the lower face of the valve, each said yoke bar being formed with alug bent around thelower helix of the spring, tofirmly secure said yoke bars and spring together and each yoke bar having its upper edge portion cut out equi-distantly on opposite sides of said lug to accommodate an arcuate portion of saidlower helix in said out out portions and to afford a seat for the lower helix of the spring on the upper edge portions of said yoke bars respectively.
3. ni valve stem guide and valve lifter for use in grinding valves and comprising a plurality of relatively movable longitudinally extending sections through which the stem of the valve to be ground is, guided, saidsections cooperating to together constitute a guiding body of a composite cross sectional external contour having portions lying on different points of a circle concentric withlthe axis' of the body and being insertable into the bore of the engine block, means for connecting said sections together for relative movement in a transverse direction to permit the passage between them of an enlarged end portion of the guided valve-stem, said means comprising a pair of yoke bars applied on opposite sides of the upper portions of said sections and with their extreme end portions in transverse registry, and pivot pins extending through said end portions and the respective intervening upper end portions of the respective sections, said sections being formed with downwardly presented arcuate, radially extending stop shoulders adapted to engage the engine block adjacent the bore thereof, and stop lugs formed on said sections respectively and so positioned as to engage one of said yoke bars when its respective section shall have been moved into position parallel to the axis of the device as a whole, in combination with a helical spring secured to the upper portion of each said yoke bar and adapted to engage the lower face of the valve, each said yoke bar being formed with a lug bent around the lower helix of the spring.

A.valve-stem guide and valve lifter for use in grinding valves andcomprising a plurality of relatively movable longitudinally extending sections through which the stem of the valve to be ground is guided, said sections cooperating to together constitute a guiding body ofa. composite cross sectional external contour having portions lying on different points of a circle concentric with the'axis of the body and being insertable into the bore of the engine block, means for connecting said sections together for relative movement in a transverse direction to permit the passage between them of an enlarged end portion of the guided valve-stem, said means comprising a pair of yoke bars applied on opposite sidesof the upper portions of said sections and with their extreme end portions in transverse registry, and pivot pins extending through said end portions and the respective intervening upper end portions of the respective sections, said sections being formed with downwardly presented arcuate, radially extending stop shoulders adapted to engage the engine block adjacent the bore thereof, and stop lugs formed on said sections respectively and sopositioned as to engage one of said yoke bars when its respective section shall have been moved into position parallel to the axis of the device as a whole, in combination with a helical spring secured to the upper portion of each said yoke bar and adapted to engage the lower face of the valve. 3

A valve-stem guide and valve lifter for use in grinding valves and comprising a plurality of relatively movable'longitudinally extending sections through which the stem of the valve to be ground is guided, said sections cooperating to together constitute a guiding body insertable into the bore of the engine block, means for connect ing said sections together for relative movement in a transverse direction to permit the passage between them of an enlarged end portion ofthe guided valve-stem, said means comprising a pair of yoke bars applied on opposite sides of the upper portions of said sections and with their ex treme end portions in transverse registry and pivot pins extending through said end portions and the respective intervening upper end portions of the respective sections, and stops provided on said sections and adapted to engage the engine block adjacent the bore thereof, in combination with a helical spring secured to the upper portion of each said yoke bar and adapted to engage the lower face of the valve.

A valve-stem guide and valve lifter for use in grinding valves and comprising a plurality of relatively movable longitudinally extending sections through which the stem of the valve to be ground is guided, said sections cooperating to together constitute a guiding body insertable into the bore of the engine block and means for connecting said sections together for relative movement in a transverse direction to permit the passage between them of an enlarged end portion of the guided valve-stem, in combination with a helical spring disposed above, and connected to said means.

A valve-stem guide and valve lifter for use in grinding valves and comprising a pair of longitudinally extending sections adapted to fit in the bore of the engine block and to be held in definite relation to each other thereby and having their opposed inner faces longitudinally grooved in such cross sectional contour as to guide a valve-stem interposed between said sections, said sections having laterally outwardly offset upper end portions, in combination with means for pivotally connecting said laterally .offset upper end portions of said sections together for relative swinging movement toward and from each other in a plane parallel to the longitudinal central line of said sections.

In a device of the .class described, .a pair of valve stem embracing members pivoted together on a transverse axis at their upper ends, said members comprising guide portions having semicylindrical outer surfaces and opposed semi-cylindrical grooves adapted snugly to fit a valve stem inserted between the pivoted upper-ends of said members.

In a device of the classdescribed, .-a pair of valve stem embracing members, said members comprising guide portions having Opposed semicylindrical grooves and head portions having opposed grooves larger than those of the guide portions, and meanspivotally connectingsaid memhers on a transverse axis at their head portions.

In a device of the class described, a pair of substantially symmetrical members pivoted together on a transverse axis at their upper ends, the lower portionsoi said-members being shaped for insertion into the valve stem guide bore of an engine and being provided with opposed semicylindrical grooves adapted to fit a valve stem inserted between the pivoted upper ends of said members, the upper portions of said members being provided with opposed grooves larger than but forming continuations of the grooves of said lower portions.

In a device of the class described, a pair of substantially symmetrical members comprising lower portions shaped for downward insertion into the valve stem guide bore of an engine, said lower portions having opposed semi-cylindrical grooves, said members havingenlarged head portions provided with opposed-grooves adapted to accommodate and pass-a valve stem-extremityof greater diameter than the passage defined by-the semi-cylindrical grooves of the said lower portions, and means pivotally joining said headportions on atransverseaxis.

In a device of the class described, 'a pair of valve stem embracing members pivoted to Igether on a transverse axis at their upper portions, the lower portions of said nembers being shaped for insertion into the valve stem guide bore of an engine and being provided with opposed grooves adapted'snugly to fit the cylindri- I cal portion of a valve stem, theupper portions of said members being provided with opposed grooves constituting continuations of the grooves of the lower portions and being adapted to pass a valve stem extremity of greater diameter than the passage defined by the grooves of the said lower portions.

In a deviceof the .class described, a pair of valve stem embracing members pivoted together at their upper ends, said members .comprising guide portions :having semi-cylindrical outer surfaces and opposed semi-cylindrical grooves adapted snugly to fit a valve stem inserted between the pivoted upper ends of said members, and a valve unseating spring carried by the pivoted upper endsof said members irrespective of pivotal relation, and projectingupwardlytherefrom.

A device of the class .described comprising a .pair of substantially symmetrical valve stem guide members shapedior insertion into the valve stem guidebore of an engine and provided at their lower portions with opposed semi-cylindrical grooves adapted to embrace the cylindrical portion of a valve stem, said members being pivoted togetheron a transverse axis at their upper ends and having the opposed surfaces of their upper portions conformed to pass a valve stem extremity of greater diameter than the passage defined by the opposed semi-cylindrical grooves of the said lower portions.

In a device of the classdescribed, a pair of valve stem embracing members pivoted together at their upper ends on a transverse axis, said members comprising guide portions having semicyiindrical outer surfacesand opposed semi-cylindrical grooves adapted snugly to fit a valve stem inserted between the pivoted upper ends of said members, and a valve unseating spring carried by the pivoted upper ends of said members, .irrespective of pivotal relation, and projecting upwardly therefrom.

In a device of the class described, a pair of valve stem embracing members pivoted together at their upper ends, on a transverse axis, said members comprising guide portions shaped to .fit within the valve stem guide bore of an engine and I provided with opposed semi-cylindrical grooves adapted snugly to ;fit a valve stem inserted between the pivoted upper ends of said members, and a coiled valve unseating spring carried-by and projecting upwardly frorntheupper ends of said members, the lowermost convolution of said spring being secured to said members in the vicinity of their pivotal connection.
