IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. h95,027, dated September 11, 1877; application filed May 31, 1877.

To all 'whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DANIEL R. LEACH, of Pike, in the county of Wyoming and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved washing-machine. Fig. 2 represents, in perspective, the swinging brace herein described. Fig. 3 represents, in perspective, the lid raised from the suds-box.

This invention relates to an improvement in washing-machines; and it consists in the improvement in the construction of the same, hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the invention.

The rectangular box A is provided with journals B B, secured thereto at the termini of a horizontal diagonal line (drawn slightly above the vertical center of the box A) by screws, or in any other suitable manner.

llhe journals B B are located above the vertical center of the box A in order that the box may swing between the posts O O with its top uppermost when it is not being rotated.

The posts C C are provided with feet D D, and connected by strips E E, as shown. Between the strips E E, and directly beneath the center of the bottom of the box A, is pivoted a swinging brace, composed of the upright F and cross-arm Gr, the latter being provided with an arm, H, let into its upper edge, and pivoted at its center, to turn at right angles to the said cross-arm G.

One of the journals B is provided with a crank, I, and the two journals are held in place in the half-boxes K K in the upper ends of the posts O C by the hooks L L, as shown.

The upper edge of the box A is provided The 11d o is provided with a steam-outlet, P, and two cross-strips, Q Q, the latter projecting slightly beyond the edges of the lid O, as shown, to be caught by the loops R, secured to the sides of the box A, to hold the lid in place upon the box.

The steam-outlet is provided with a plug, S, for closing.

The operation of the invention is as follows: To hold the box A steady while placing the clothes and water in it, and fastening the lid O down, the swinging brace is turned up vertically, bringing the cross-arm G in contact with the bottom of the box, and to prevent the brace from accidentally falling down the arm H is turned at right angles to the arm G. The clothes, having been previously soaked over night in water that was hot when poured upon them, are soaped where most soiled, and placed in the box A until it is about two-thirds full, when a boiling-hot soap-surlsnprepared by putting in the water a sufficient quantity of soap to wash the clothes, is poured upon them until they are thoroughly covered, when the lid O is put on and secured to place by the loops R. The

swinging brace is then turned down, to permit the box A to be rotated by the crank I. After rotating the box three or four times the plug S should be withdrawn, to permit the steam to escape, when it should be again replaced, aud the box rotated for fifteen or twenty minutes. The clothes should be then taken out and rinsed in two waters, when it will be found that the clothes have been thoroughly cleansed.

Having thus described my improvements, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In combination with the rectangular box A, the swinging brace, composed of the upright F, cross-arm Gr, and cross-arm H, constructed to operate substantially as described.
