4 Claims.
In the construction of ships and like vessels, it is customary to employ bulkheads made of metal sheets or plates, which are overlapped and riveted or otherwise secured together. The overlapped junction of the plates, adjacent the deck, is usually encased in a baseboard or base plate which as now used, is cumbersome and bulky in that the baseboard or plate must first be mounted on a plastic levelling guide and expanded metal interposed between the baseboard and bulkhead, which serves to reinforce a plastic composition deposited between the baseboard and bulkhead. With the device of the present invention we provide a compact, durable and less expensive medium of encasing the overlapped joint of the bulkhead near the ships deck, at the same time providing a baseboard or plate which is selflevelling.
Another object of the invention is to provide a baseboard or plate especially adapted for use on ships which may be mounted directly on the ships deck, contiguous to the bulkhead, instead of spaced therefrom as has heretofore been done, the base plate being so formed that when the floor is poured, a substantially monolithic structure is provided.
Although the device of the present invention is especially adapted for use on ships, it is of course, to be understood that it may be used as a baseboard in building structures in a manner well known in the art.
Other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description thereof, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is a perspective view of baseboards or plates constructed in accordance with the present invention, illustrating the application thereof; and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the base plates, per se.
For the purpose of illustrating the application of the invention, we have, in Fig. 1, shown a ships deck 3, upon which a bulkhead is mounted the bulkhead embodying a pair of sheets or plates 4 and 5 which may be secured together in a manner well known in the art.
The baseboard or plate constructed in accordance with the present invention is shown to advantage in Fig. 2 and consists of a vertical base portion 6, the sides of which are straight. The body of the board or plate, designated 7, issues from the top of the base 6 and is laterally offset therefrom, the upper terminals of the body being disposed at right angles to provide a lip or flange 8. It will be noted that the inner face of the body portion '7 of the plate is straight, in order to abut the outer face of the lowermost bulkhead sheet 4 from a point in proximity to the lip 8 to the base 6. The lip 8 overhangs the top of the sheet 4, but is preferably spaced from the bulkhead sheet 5 to provide a groove or pocket between the base plate and bulkhead, adapted for the reception of a plastic composition 9. Furthermore, it will be noted upon reference to Fig. 1 of the drawing, that 55 a space is provided between the base 6 and the sheet 4 of the bulkhead to provide a channel in which, if desired, a plastic composition 10 may be interposed.
Preferably the outer side of the base plate 7 is roughened to insure adherence of the plastic floor of the ship thereto. We prefer in this connection to provide longitudinally extending grooves 11 in the outer face of the base, which are V-shaped in cross-section and receive the plastic composition used in a floor 12, which latter is superimposed on the deck 3. It will be noted that the top of the floor is uniplanar with the top of the base 6, which latter curves inwardly to provide an are thereby eliminating the possibility of materials gathering in the juncture between the surface of the floor and the base plate.
In employing a base plate of the present construction, it is manifest that the plate may be mounted directly on the ships deck and if desired, the plastic composition poured therebetween and the sheet 4 of the bulkhead. The plate is urged into contiguous relationship with said plate 4, in order to be positioned substantially as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The plastic composition 9 interposed between the lip 8 and. the sheet 5 of the bulkhead, serves to bond the plate to the bulkhead and at the same time provides a filler to prevent extraneous materials from finding their way between the top of the base plate and the bulkhead. The floor 12 constantly urges the base plate toward the bulkhead, preventing any dislodgment of the plate.
Although the base plates constructed in accordance with the present invention are preferably formed from plastic material, it is nevertheless to be understood that various other materials may be used within the spirit and scope of the invention. Furthermore, various changes may be made therein, especially in the details of construction, proportion and arrangement oi parts, within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination with a bulkhead embodying overlapped nonplanar sheets, a base plate for engagement over said sheets at their point of overlapping including a plate body, a portion of one side of which is contiguous to one of said sheets, a further portion of said plate overhanging the top of said sheet in spaced relationship to the other sheet of the bulkhead, and a plastic composition disposed on the top of said first sheet between said other sheet of the bulkhead and the overhanging portion of the plate.
2. A base plate for building structures having plastic floors including an integral body having a vertical base portion, the opposite sides of which are straight, one of said sides having grooves formed therein for the reception of the plastic floor composition, the body of the plate issuing from the top of said base portion and offset laterally therefrom, the upper terminal of the body being turned at right angles to the latter and having a straight inner face.
3. In combination with a bulkhead embodying overlapped upper and lower nonplanar sheets, a base plate for engagement over the overlapped margins of said sheets including a plate body mounted on the deck, an intermediate portion of one face of said body engaging the lower of the sheets, the lower part of said face being spaced from the lower sheet to provide a channel, the upper margin of the base plate overhanging the top of the lower sheet in spaced relation thereto and the upper sheet.
4. A base plate for building structures, including a relatively wide base for direct engagement with a floor of the building structure, the top of the base issuing vertically into an upper portion which is in the same vertical plane with the base and equipped with a laterally offset portion, the upper terminal of said vertically issuing portion being also laterally offset, the inner faces of said base and two laterally offset portions being straight and lying in three different vertical planes, the outer face of the base plate being straight while the outer face of the portion issuing from the base is curved.
