IMPROVEMENT lN POTATO-BUG DESTROVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,014, dated September 11, 1877 application filed April 9, 1877.
To all whom itmay concern Be it known that I, JACOB J ACOBSEN, of Swan Lake, in the county of Turner and Territory of Dakota, have invented a new and Improved Apparatus for Destroying Potato- Bugs, of which the following is a specificatiOn:

The object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive apparatus for removing potato-bugs from the vines and conveying them to a place where they may be burned or otherwise destroyed.
In the drawing, A A are heads, which are attached diagonally to the handles B, which are crossed and pivoted at a, and operate after the manner of a pair of shears. From these heads fingers 0 project, which are oppositely inclined in the two heads, so that the fingers of one head overlap those of the other head as the heads are closed together.
D D are wire loops, that are attached to the heads A,for supporting the bags E. These bags extend over the heads A, and are provided with an elastic cord in their upper edge, which may be placed in notches in the ends of the fingers G.
F F are wire loops hinged to the heads A, and provided with springs Gthat are attached to the heads A and to the said wire loops.
H isa cord, which passes through eyes that project from the heads A, the ends of which cord are attached to the loops F. A spring, I, is attached to the handles B for drawing them together.
The manner of using my improved apparatus is as follows: The handles B are opened and the teeth 0 are inserted in a potato-vine, the bag E being in a horizontal position, or nearly so. The loop F is now worked so as to brush the bugs from the vine by drawing the cord H. When it is desired to close the bag and carry away the bugs, the elastic cord in the upper edge of the bag is placed in the notches in the ends of the fingers, and the heads A are closed together, and the bugs are then carried away and destroyed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The handles B, heads A, having fingers O, the fixed hoops D, bags E, and movable loops F, in combination, substantially as shown and described.
