2 Claims.

This invention is a clothes drier adapted for both exterior and interior use.

Clothes driers which are now available on the market consist of two types, one for interior use which is limited as to capacity although foldable, and others which are adapted for exterior use and must be mounted in fixed position, usually being mounted on a post which is set in the ground. 30 This invention provides a clothes drier of the portable type which is adapted for both exterior and interior use, and which requires only a small area for its installation.

The main object of the invention is to provide a clothes drier of the portable type, which may be used either interiorly or exteriorly of the building, and which is provided with suitable anchoring means for exterior use.

Another object of the invention is to provide this clothes drier in such form that it can be folded into a compact bundle when not in use and which may be conveniently and quickly set up.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the following description is read on the drawing forming a part of this specification and in which similar reference characters are used to designate similar parts throughout the several views, of which:

Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevation showing the anchoring means for interior installation.

The invention consists of a trunnion blockor pivot block of rectangular cross section, on each side of which is pivotally secured a bar or reach 11, the pivotal securing means being indicated at 12, the members 11 being intermediately pivoted to form the legs 13.

A series of spaced holes 14 is provided in each reach 11 through which a clothes line 15 is threaded, this clothes line passing successively through the first hole of the series in each of the members l1, thence being carried to the next in the series along the face of the element 11 as indicated at 16 so as to provide a series of supralateral lines. t is known that the supra-lateral clothes lines are old in the art and this specific arrangement is therefore not claimed per se.

The anchoring means for the device consists of an element 17 which may be of flexible material secured in an eye 18, which eye is secured in the bottom of the trunnion block 10, the other end of the flexible element 17 being removably secured to an anchor 19 fixed in the ground, the detachable securing means 20 being preferably an ordinary snap hook.

21 and 22 being recessed at their ends to engage the legs 13 as indicated at 25. In place of the flexible element 17, adjustable tensioning means may be provided in the form of a rod 26, which is adjustable as to length by means of a turnbuckle 2'7.

The anchoring means shown in Fig. 4 can be Y0- used for exterior mounting in place of that shown in Fig. 2 in the event that the wind is not strong enough to upset the drier, the main purpose of the anchor 19 for exterior use being to prevent overturning of the drier by heavy winds. By the 75. use of the adjustable anchoring device indicated at 26 and 27 in Fig. 4, the lines 15 may be tightened merely by drawing up on the turnbuckle 27, and this can be done before or after clothes are hung on the line, and due to the fact that the 80. lines are slidable through the apertures 14, the tension will be equalized throughout all the lines of the drier.

As will be noted; by tightening the element 26- 27, the elements 21--22 are drawn upwardly 85. on the legs 13, spreading the legs farther apart, and coincidently spreading the reaches 11, thus tensioning the line. The same effect is produced in the arrangement shown in Fig. 2 where the anchoring element shown in Fig. 4 is used for ex- 90. terior mounting, The device folds into compact form as shown in Fig. 3, it merely being necessary to release the anchor 1'7 or 26-27 and swing the four members 11 to a position parallel with the trunnion block 10.

Having described an operative device it will be understood that variations in construction and arrangement of parts which are consistent with the appended claims may be resorted to without detracting from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

I claim:

1. A clothes drier, consisting of a rectangular block, a plurality of leg members pivotally connected upon the lateral faces of said block, respectively, said members extending upwardly in reach portions when in operative condition disposed in correspondingly inclined directions, clothes lines threaded through apertures in said reach members, a pair of strut-bars engaged between opposite pairs of said leg members, respectively, and connected together at their cross-joint by a hook-bolt, and turnbuckle connections between said hook-bolt and said block to compressively urge said strut-bars upwardly between said legs and thereby spread the same and correspondingly exert tension upon the clothes lines carried by said reaches.
