Description
ARD March 6, 1934. ||A R GQDD AYS MATCH Box HOLDER FOR ASH TR Filed April 21, 1932 SWW/wko@ A. E. addaf.
Patented Mar.` 6, 1934 I i" Holly R. Goddard;Y San/taY Mcnica,-VCalif.* Y l Application April 21, 1932, Serial No. 606,690
4 Claims; `(ci. 131-51) This invention relates to match box holders for ash trays and has for an object to provide cer- Y tain improvements in holders for match boxes whereby. the support'may beformed from a single blank of sheet metal shaped to enter the match box and force open the box and having a curved integral attaching foot, the holder being strong, light, and inexpensive to manufacture and being adapted to be removablyimounted by means of the attaching foot without the use of screws,
bolts, or like fastening devices. Y
A further object is to provide means for securing the holder to an ash tray comprising a tubular rubber ring adapted to encircle the wall of the ash tray and resiliently confine the attaching foot to said wall so that the holder may be rmlyheld in place to replenish used boxes of matches while at the Sametime may be easily and quickly removed when'desired for cleaning and polishing. y f
With the above and other objectsin view the invention consists'in certain features hereinafter first fully described and then particularly claimed. 2| In the accompanying drawing forming part of o this specification, y n
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combined ash tray and match box holder constructed in accordance with the invention, 80
2-2 of Figure 1, Y
Figure 3 isa cross section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, and I Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of the support removed from the attaching ring.
Referring now tothe Adrawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in the various views, 10` designates an ash tray, preferably having an exteriorV circumferential -12 surrounds the wall of the ash tray and is split on its inner circumference to receive the rib 11. TheV ring is of suicient diameter to form a rubber annulus which snugly hugsl the wall of suiciently above the table, desk or other piece of furniture to'prevent marring of the furniture. The match box holder consists essentially Yof two parts, namely, a match box clamp 13, and an upright support 14 adapted to enter the clamp and force the box open. The clamp 13, as best shown in Figure 3, preferably consists o f a single U-shaped sheet metal member adapted to embrace three sides of the match box,`the member preferably being-formed of spring metal so that Figure 2 is a vertical section taken on the line rib 11 on the wall thereof. A rubber tubular ring' the tray and elevates the bottom of the tray the matchbox will be frictionally held against dislodgement. y
The support 14, as best shown in Figure `1, is preferably formed of a single blank of sheet metal bent U-shaped to provide spaced parallel e0 legs 15, one of the legs being of greater length than the opposite leg and being curved longitudinally of itswidth to provide an arcuate integral attaching foot 16, the radius of curvature of the attaching foot being approximately the l same as that of the inner circumference of the tubular ring 12. The support is formed of suitable dimensions to enter the match box 17 and force the telescoping inner container thereof ahead of it to open position, as best shown in 70 Figure 2. y The attaching foot 16 is of suicient height to enter between the inner circumference of the 'f rubber tubular ring 12 and wall of the ash tray and extend beyond the rib 11 so as to be firmly .75
held against the rib l1 and rim of the ash tray by the bead'l or that portion of the tubular ring whichhas been displaced by entry of the foot. The foot'is also of suchlength as to extend to the opposite bead portion 19 of the tubular rub- 80 ber ring, as best shown in Figure 2, said latter bead portion consequently forming a stop to limit insertion of the holder. 'The short leg of the holder, it will be observed, engages the upper surfaces of the ring so that it is supported upon the rubber ring, contact of this leg with the rubber ring also serving to limit insertion of the support. y
It willbe observed that the support letmay be manually removed for cleaning and polishing when desired without disturbing the rubber ring 12 and may be applied and removed without the use of tools since no bolts, Screws, or other connectors are used in the construction of the device. i
What is claimed is: p
1. In combination, a wall, a rubber ring encircling the wall and a single blank vof metal bent substantially U-shaped to provide a support for entering a match box to force the match box vto open position, one leg'of thev support being extended. beyond the opposite leg and being curved transversely to provide an attaching foot adapted to be inserted within the inner circumference of the ring and be held by pressure of the ring in intimate contact with said wall.
2. In combination, a wall having a rib, a tubular rubberring split von its inner circumference to'receive said rib, and a substantially U-shaped support adapted to enter a match box and lhav-1` 110r ing one leg extended and curved to correspond to the radius of curvature of the inner circumference of the tubular ring to fit snugly thereagainst and be frictionally held by pressure of the ring against of the leg forming an attaching foot adapted to' be inserted between the rubber ring and said Wall,
the marginal portion of the split in the ring being distended by such insertion and serving to resiliently hold the attaching foot clamped against said rib and said rim.
4. In combination, a wall, a hollow tubular rubber ring encircling the Wall, a U-shaped clamp adapted to embrace a match box, and a U-shaped support adapted to enter the match box Within the clamp to adjust the match box to open position, said support having one leg extended and curved to correspond to the radius of curvature of the inner circumference ofVv the ring, said extended leg forming an attaching foot adapted to be inserted Within the inner circumference of the ring and to be held by pressure of the ring in intimate contact With said wall.
