Application December 10, 1954, Serial No. 474,338
1 Claim. (Cl. 131175) This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in invalids utility holders and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly eflicient in use and economical in manufacture.
Another equally important object of my invention is the provision of a collapsible standard and utility holder for use by a person who is physically incapacitated by the loss of the use of his upper limbs.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary detail view of the clamping member as used in the invention;
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the holder embodied in the invention;
Fig. 4 is a side sectional view of the holder embodied in the invention;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of the invention; and
Fig. 6 is a perspective view showing another modified form of the invention.
To accomplish the objects of my invention, I associate my utility holder with a stand 10 having extending therefrom a standard 11, which standard may be formed in two parts and held in adjustable position by clamping collars 10' and adapted to be collapsible telescopically. Inserted in the upper section of the standard 11 is an extended rod 11 bowed in substantial U-shape and of the construction set forth in my United States Letters Patent No. 2,452,749. The rod 11' telescopically carries an adjustable extension bar 12 having a plurality of annular grooves 12 formed in its exterior, into any of which grooves 12 a set screw 13 carried by the free end of Qthe rod 11' may be projected to hold such bar in any desired extended position with respect to the rod 11'.
Secured to the lower end of the rod 12 is a nipple 14 {having as an integral part thereof a depending flange 15 which has formed therein an aperture 15' through which :PflSSfiS a wing nut 16 for adjustably securing to opposite sides of the flange 15 clamping plates 17 provided with clamping jaws 17'. able movement about the rod 12.
The nipple 14 is adapted for rotat- My utility holder as viewed in Fig. 3 is shown as an The inner body The outer body portion 22 has one open end to receive the corresponding open end of the inner body portion 20, and has its opposite end closed by a wall 23.
The wall 23 has a U-shaped notch 24 in its upper edge 25. Such groove 24 has a protruding U-shaped lip 26 adjacent the bottom of the U and extending half way up the side of the groove 24. The lip 26 is formed as an integral part of the outer body portion 22.
The lip 26 is adapted to frictionally receive a cigarette holder 27. The holder has formed at one end a mouthpiece 28, while the opposite end terminates into a small tube 29. The end of the tube 29 has frictionally secured thereto for slidable movement thereon a sleeve 30. The sleeve 30 forms a receptacle 32 for receiving the end of a cigarette. When the cigarette has burnt down to the sleeve 30, it may be ejected from the receptacle 32 by simply sliding the sleeve 30 back upon the tube 29. The tube 29 will thereby eject the cigarette butt into the tray 19. I
To empty the tray all one need to do is to remove the inner body portion 20 by sliding it out of frictional engagement with the outer body portion 22, thus leaving the lip 26 and the body portion 22 and holder 27 secured in the clamping jaws 17'.
In Fig. 5, I have shown my utility holder comprising a hanger attachment 33 having parallelly extendingv plates 34 provided with article holding surfaces 35, to-
gether with a well-known hanger locking arrangement 36. The locking arrangement has a stem 37 terminating at one end in a longitudinally extending mounting bar 38. The mounting bar 38 is adapted to be placed between and held in fixed position with respect to the clamping jaws 17'.
The arrangement is such that when the stem 37 of the locking member 36 is in a vertical position, an article placed between the holding surfaces 35 of the parallel plates 34 will be locked in position with respect to the mounting bar 38. The mounting bar 38 is then placed in the clamping jaws 17' of the utility holder and can then be adjusted to a desired position with respect to an incapacitated person. For purposes of illustration the article so held in the utility holder is shown as a newspaper 40, but may include such other articles as magazines, books, letters, pictures, etc.
In Fig. 6 my utility holder is employed to hold a smoking pipe 41. The pipe bowl 42, being of any wellknown construction, is attached to an elongated stem 43, having at one end thereof a mouthpiece 44. The opposite end of the stem 43 has a mounting bar 45 which is adapted to frictionally slide into the stem of the bowl. This mounting bar 45 is adapted to be inserted into the clamping jaws 17. This manner of attachment of the holder allows the pipe bowl 42 to be removed and filled or refilled without releasing the clamping jaws 17'.
The utility holder described in this specification has i met with great success and is in demand in hospitals throughout the country. It enables one who is incapacitated through the loss of the use of his upper limbs to enjoy as many comforts as possible without requiring the constant attention of an attendant.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
An invalids cigarette holder comprising a supporting Patented Nov. 10, 1959.
tray having a removable section frictionally telescopically arranged, one of said tray sections providing a rear wall notched to provide open communication with a U-shaped lip extending laterally therefrom, a cigarette holder having a reduced stem portion adapted to frictionally sit on said U-shaped lip and extending inwardly of said notched walls of said one of said tray sections, said stem having its end portion within said one of said tray portions formed to provide an injector stud, a hollow cigarette holder slidably carried by said stud and which when moved in the direction of the rear wall of said one of said tray sections will cause the cigarette therein to be ejected therefrom into said tray by said stud.
