(Cl. 5-91) The present invention is for improvements in or relating to hospital or invalid beds and has for its object a construction, permitting the use of a bed pan without the necessity of lifting or 5 otherwise disturbing the patient.

Another object of my invention is to so design said sanitary convenience arrangement that after removal of the bed pan and certain other parts, the patient may be locally treated or washed,

also without necessitating undesirable disturbances of the patient.

Another object of my present invention consists in providing the mattress of an invalid bed of the kind set forth, with means permitting M the use of the said convenience arrangement without the risk of soiling any part of the mattress and ensuring that all excrements and washing or other fluids get into the pan.

Still another object of this invention lies in providing a mattress and particularly a mattress of an invalid bed comprising a sanitary convenience arrangement, with cushioningmeans, reducing the danger of the patient becoming bedsore, said cushioning means being so designed and arranged that the body of the patient is not locally raised, but remains flat and undisturbed.

Speaking generally the present invention has for its object the provision of a hospital or invalid bed, having a convenience arrangement attached thereto, and comprising an entirely smooth and highly resilient mattress adapted to be readily taken to parts and cleaned by the nurse or other attendant, ventilating means being provided ior airing the interior of the mattress to fulfill all hygienic conditions.

With these and other objects in view the invention primarily consists in providing the mat tress of an invalid or hospital bed, alternatively the means for supporting said mattress with a cavity or chamber communicating with a chem nel opening into the surface of the mattress and arranged to! removably receiving a convenience arrangement or bed pan. m other features oi my new and improved hospital or invalid bed will become apparent from the appendant claims and from the lcllowlng tiescriptlon, reference being had to the accompaiav lug drawings, in which:

' Referring to the drawingsin detail; the mattress comprises springs 81, metallic connecting members 82 interconnecting the springs, a support 83 for the springs and a removable padding 84. The support83, springs 81 and padding 84 are provided with vertical registering openings forming a passage through the mattress and a cover 85 of rubber or like water-proof material is arranged over the padding 84 and is provided W with a depending and downwardly flaring cuff 87 thereby forming a vertical opening 86 through the mattress.

As shown in Fig. 8, the opening in the support 83 is rectangular in shape and the edges of the cuff 87 are suitably secured to the edges of the opening in said support as indicated at 87 whereby the cover 84 as well as the cuff may be drawn tightly to avoid the formation of folds.

The large rectangular lower end of the passage 5 86 is particularly desirable in that it affords sumcient space for convenience in treating the pa tient from below.

As indicated in Fig. l, the padding 84 is arranged to underlie the upper mouth of the passage 86 and thereforecomfortably cushion the occupant ofv the bed.

When the story convenience arrangement lsnot in use, the passage 88 is closed by means of a plug member be illustrated in detail in Fig. 4. The plugging member is provided with an oval top 90 and sloping sides 91 and a rectangular base 92. It is mounted ona board 93 and when inserted into the passage from the bottom, it fits air-tight therein. When so positioned the plugging member is held in place by means of a slide 94 supported beneath the supporting member 83 as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, suitable anti-friction rollers 96 being mounted on the lower face of the board 93.

Figures 5 and 6 illustrate a modification of the invention including an air cushion designated generally at 100 and located in an opening 99 provided in the padding 84. The padding 84 is supported the same as in the first described embodiment of the invention on springs 81 resting upon the support 83. The air cushion 100 is preferably of rectangular shape and lying inside of the opening 99 is disposed flush with the upper surface of the padding for the convenience and comfort of the patient. Preferably, in this form of the invention the padding 84 is divided into a plurality of cells by members 97 whereby the padding material in any one or several of the cells may be readily renewed when occasion requires.

The air cushion 100 is formed of rubber or like waterproof material and is hollow whereby it may be inflated by air introduced through a suitable tube 104. The interior of the hollow cushion 100 is divided by a plurality of radial partitions 101 extending from the central opening 105 therein to the outer edges and dividing the hollow cushion into a plurality of compartments 102 communicating with each other through openings 103 provided in the partitions. If desired, the cells may be stuffed with sponge rubber or like material instead of being inflated with air. The upper part of the cushion 100 is formed integral with the cover 107 of rubber or like water-proof material which extends over the major portion of the padding 84 and is fastened described in connection with the construction illustrated in Fig. 2. When the cushion is inflated, grooves 101*- are formed in the upper surface thereof along the lines where the partitions 101 join the top of the cushion. The cushion being substantially concave on the upper surface, washing or other fluids immediately flow into the pan through the channels or grooves 101.

One of the grooves 101 is disposed lengthwise in the axis of the bed so that a depression is thus provided for receiving the tail-bone of the patient, thereby preventing the latter from contracting bed sores.

The medial portion of the depending cuff 106 is attached externally to elastic members 108 for the purpose of causing the material of the cuff to flow outwardly when the springs of the mattress are compressed by the weight of the patient.

In order to supportthe patient in a sitting or reclining position, the bedstead may be provided with an adjustable back rest, as shown in Fig. 1, comprising a frame '73 pivoted to side members (4 slidably mounted on guide rods 75 secured 'to the side rails 76 of the bed. The side members 74 have teeth 7'7 for engagement by the ends of a stay member 78 hinged. to the frame '73 which latter is preferably provided with a cover"79 of elastic material so as toresiliently support the pillow 80.

While it is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent. it will be understood that I do not limit myself to the details herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to, when desired, as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is:

A mattress or mattress section for a hospital bed comprising 2. padding, aspring element supporting said padding, said padding and spring element having a vertical passage therethrough, a chamber for the reception of a bed pan located below said support, an elastic waterproof ,cover detachably connected to said padding and having a cuff extending through said passage, means for connecting the lower end of said cuff to the top of said chamber and tensioned elastic straps connecting the sides of the cuff to the frame of the spring element.

A mattress or mattress section for a hospital bed comprising a padding, a support therefor, said padding and said support having a vertical passage therethrough, a chamber for the reception of a bed pan located below said support, an elastic waterproof cover detachably connected to said padding and having a central opening and a cuff extending through said passage, means for connecting the lower end of said cuff to the top of said bed pan receiving chamber, a hollow cushion member located in said passage in said padding and surrounding the top of said cufl', internal partitions in the cushion member dividing same into a number of compartments and sloping downwardly toward the center and means for expanding said compartments, thereby to stretch the waterproof cover and cuff and to form grooves at the locality of the partitions.

A mattress or mattress section for a hospital bed comprising a padding, a spring element supporting said padding, said padding and said spring element having a vertical passage therethrough, a chamber forthe reception of a bed pan located below said support, an elastic waterproof cover detachably connected to said padding and having a central opening and a cufi extending through said passage, means for connecting the lower end of said cuff to the top of said chamber and tensioned elastic straps connecting the sides of the,cufi to the frame of the spring element, a hollow cushion member located in said passage in said padding and surrounding the top of said cuff, internal partitions in the cushion member dividing same into a number of compartments and sloping downwardly toward the center and means for expanding said compartments, thereby to stretch the waterproof cover and cuff and to form grooves at the locality of the partitions.
