To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, CHARLES CHINNOGK, of Brooklyn, in Kings county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filler-Mouths for Lamps and other receptacles for liquids, of which the following is a specification:

This invention relates particularly to. a lampfiller mouth or cap for which Letters Patent No. 181,909 were granted to me on the 5th day of September, 1876; and its object is to afl'ord facility for replenishing lamps without soiling the outside thereof.

To this end it consists in a filler-cap composed of two parts, one concave or funnelshaped, provided at its outer circumference with an annular rim for attachment to the filler-mouth of a lamp or other article, and having an opening through it, and another consisting of a cover arranged outside of the part first named, and adapted, upon being turned or oscillated, to cover or uncover the opening therein, whereby, as the said cover may itself be reached, it may be manipulated easily without any handle on it, anda simpleand cheap cap, which will serve as a funnel in filling a lamp or other article, and will return all drippings thereto, is produced.

It also consists in the combination of a burner-tube and ratchet with this filler-cap,

and in details of construction to be hereinafter 3 is a central vertical section thereof.

Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.

A and B designate the two principal parts of the filler-mouth. Both are represented as concave, cup-shaped, or funnel-shaped. The inner part is shown as having an annular rim, for attachment to a lam p-reservoir, and as provided with an opening, a, of suitable size, to admit of the convenient introduction of oil into the reservoir. The outer part, B, is shown as being secured to the inner part by having its outer edge turned or bent into a groove in the exterior thereof; is provided with an opening or orifice, b, corresponding to the opening a in the part A; and is free toturn or oscillate so that the opening or orifice I) will be coincident with the opening or orifice a, and afford access-to the reservoir, or so that the solid portion of thepart B will cover the opening a and close the reservoir.

It is obvious that the form of the parts A and B enables them to serve as a funnel to facilitate the pouring of the oil through them without spilling any upon the outside of the lamp, and to serve as a drip-cup, to return oil that might be spilled.

Moreover, as the opening through these parts into the reservoir is lower than the top of the reservoir, the reservoir may be filled till the oil overflows the opening, without any danger of its running over the outside and upon articles whereon the lamp may stand.

These advantages might be afforded if the inner part, A, were alone made concave, and the outer part made of ordinary cylindric form, and detachable.

Instead of pivoting or securing the outer part B to the exterior of the inner part A, it may be pivoted in any suitable manner at the center with good results.

Although this filler-cap is illustrated only in connection with a lamp, it is applicable to various other articlessuch, for instance, as

oil-cans and inkstands.

G designates a burner; tube, erected upon the filler-mouth A B. It is shown as fitting in a socket, D, projecting from the said fillermouth, and may be removable therefrom. This socket can be made to serve 'as the means for securing the two parts of the filler-mouth together.

When a burner-tube is thus combined with the filler-cap the latter is doubly advantageous, for it then serves the additional purpose of a dripcup, to collect and return to the reservoir drippings from the burner-tube.

The burner-tube C may be advantageously provided with a holder, E, furnished with spring-fingers for supporting a draft-chimney, shade, or other device, and may also have a ratchet-wheel, F, to facilitate the adjustment of the wick.

It will be seen that, by my invention, I provide a filler-mouth which, though simple and inexpensive, affords facility for filling the receptacle to which it is applied without danger of soiling the outside of the receptacle, and afi'ords provision for the return of drippings to the receptacle.

I do not intend in this application to claim the peculiar construction of the ratchet wickfeeder, nor its combination with and relation to the chimney or shade holder, these features being included in an application for a patent previously filed by me. a

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is-

1. The filler-cap composed of two parts, one concave or fun nel-shaped, provided at its outer circumference with an annular rim, for attachment to the filler-mouth of a lamp or other receptacle for liquid, and having an opening through it, and another part consisting of a cover arranged outside the part first named, and adapted, upon being turned or oscillated, to cover or uncover the opening therein, sub stantially as specified, whereby the necessity for a handle wherewith to operate the movable part is obviated.

2. The combination, in a filler-cap, of a funnel-shaped part provided with an opening, and a second funnel-shaped part arranged outside the former, provided with a corresponding opening, and having its outer circumference bent over into a rabbet or groove located in the exterior of the funnel-shaped part first named, substantially as specified, whereby the means serving to secure the movable part to the outer part serve also as a handle for turning or oscillating the movable part to cover or uncover the other part. 3. A lamp-burner composed of a fixed concave or funnel-shaped cap provided with an opening, an outer movable concave or funnelshaped cover therefor, provided with a corresponding opening, and having its outer edge bent over the outside of the said cap, so as to serve as a handle whereby it may be turned or oscillated, and a burner-tube erected from the said cap, said parts being organized and combined substantially as specified.
