IMPROVEMENT IN CUFF-FASTENERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,837, dated September 4, 1877; application filed July 24, 1877.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES H. MYERS, of Troy, Rensselaer county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff-Fasteners; and I hereby declare the same to be fully, clearly, and exactly described, as follows.

This invention relates to devices for temporarily but securely attaching linen cuffs to the sleeves of dresses or coats; and it consists in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a part of a cuff having my fastener attached; Figs. 2 and 3, plan views, respectively, of the lower and upper sides of the same; Fig. 4, a side elevation, and Fig. 5 an end view, of my device.

A represents a piece of sheet metal, cut or struck up into the form shown, and having tangs b b, to which are soldered the wires ca. The piece A is somewhat curved, as shown in Fig. 4, in order to conform to the shape of the cufi'. The wires a a are pointed and bent at right angles in opposite directions, but in the same plane.

0 represents the pin for attaching the device to the cuff, and is constructed as follows: A suitable piece of elastic wire is pointed at one end, and the other is bent, as shown in Fig. 2, once at about thirty degrees and twice thereafter at about sixty degrees, in order to form a triangular shank. The first two bendings are made in the same plane, but the third is inclined thereto, as illustratedin Fig. 4, the end 0 thereby constituting the spring for holding the pin in its normal position away from the piece A.

The hinge and catch for the pin are struck up from the body of the piece A by detaching rectangular pieces 0 c of the same on three of their sides, the attached side of the hinge being one of those at right angles to the length of the piece A, and that of the catch being one of the sides parallel to the axis of the piece A. The portions so cut away are then simply bent as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, and subserve the functions above named.

In order to finish the article, it is finally galvanized, tinned, or plated, if made of base metal.

In using the device it is attached by means of the pin to the cuff, and the latteris inserted within the sleeve of the dress or coat. One of the pins a is caused to enter as far as it will go into the fabric of the sleeve, care being taken to prevent its appearance on the .outside. The fabric is then made a little slack between the pins a a, and the other pin is inserted thereby securely attaching the cuff to the sleeve.

In order to release the cufl', the fabric is simply pinched up between the points of the pins until the same are uncovered, when the cuff may be Withdrawn from the sleeve.

My device is especially adapted for attaching ladies cuffs to the sleeves of the dresses when the absence of a suitable under-garment necessitates the pinning of the cuff to the dress-sleeve from the outside, in which case the glittering head of the ordinary pin is unsightly, and its point is liable to cause discomfort, if inside, to the wearer; if outside, to some one else.

The tendency of gentlemens cufi's, when attached to the shirt-sleeve, either to fall over the hand or disappear up the coat-sleeve, renders my device of nearly as great utility to the male sex.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The plate A, curved to conform to the end, and having the pins 0 a a, substantially as described.

2. The cuff-fastener herein described, consisting of the plate A, struck up as shown to form the hinge and spring, and provided with the pins a a and O, as set forth.
