IMPROVEMENT IN TOY TARGETS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,614, dated August 28, 1877 application filed July 31, 1817.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, UHARLEs OAKEoED, of the city and county ofV Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Toy Targets, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a rear view of the target with a movable bullseye within an opening of the target-board. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectionat the line y y of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a front view, showing a picture in place of the bulls-eye and another picture above the upper edge ot' the target board, the movement having been eifected by the springing upward of aslide to which the bulls-eye and pictures are attached. Fig. 4 is a cross-section at the linear x of Fig. l.

The nature ot my invention consists in the combination of a slide having a bulls-eye and a picture or pictures on its front side with a target-board having an opening to receive the bulls-eye, in such a manner that when the bulls-eye is struck it is forced backward out of the opening, and the slide is forced upward by means of a spring, whereby the bulls-eye is carried above the opening in -the rear of solid part ot' the target-board, and a picture on the slide below the bullseye is brought to view back of the opening, and one above the eye attached to the slide is shown above the upper edge of the targetboard.

I make the toy of pasteboard, or of iron, or any other suitable material.

A is the target-board, having an opening, a, to receive the bulls-eye B, which is permanently connected to the slide C. The slide is adapted to move up and down between the ways E E. These ways and the back F are formed of a single piece by making incisions along the lines which form the four corners b b and b b' before bending the sheet into the form shown in the cross-section, Fig. 2. The vways E E are conned to the rear side of the target-board A in any suitable manner, and form the space c (shown in Fig. 2) for the movement of the slide C and parts attached. The slide has a vertical rib, d, on its rear side, which is pressed upon by the back F sufficiently tight to force the bullsAeye forward and into the opening a, when the slide is brought down into its lowest position, as seen in Fig. 1.

To the lower end of the rib is attached the middle portion of the gumstrip G, the ends of which are confined to the target-board, as seen in Fig. l, so that when the slide is in its lowest position the strip is pressed downward, as represented; and when the bulls-eye is shot the force sends it backward and out of the opening a of the target-board, and the force of the gum-strip Gr, in its endeavor to gain a straight position, springs the slide O upward and exposes a figure (which in the present case is a picture ot' the head of a stag) to view in the rear of said opening a and a picture representing a cat and kitten above the upper edge of the board A.

It will be seen that any pictures may be used instead ot' the above, and,'if desired, the upper picture may be omitted from the slide, the lower one only being used, or viceversa.

The gum-strip may be attached to the upper part of the slide instead of the lower part, to -pnll it upward instead of pushing it.

Any other suitable spring or other device may be used instead of the gum sprin g or strip G to give the forward or upward movement to the slide (l.

I claim as my invention- 1. The ways E E and back F, formed of a single piece of pasteboard or other suitable material, in combination with the targetboard A, having an opening, a, to receive the `bullseye, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of the slide C, having one or more pictures and a bulls-eye on its front side, with a target-board, A, having an opening, a, guideway E E, and back F, the said slide being operated by means of the gum-strip G or other suitable device, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
