Description

A. R. PAGANO Feb." 6, 1934.
CAM LEVER CLOSING ARRANGEMENT FOR PRESSURE COOKING POTS Filed April 1 1932 Patented Feb. 6, 1934 PATENT OFFICE CAM LEVER, CLOSING ARRANGEMENT 'FOR PRESSURE COOKING POTS Andrea Riccardo Pagano, Genoa, Italy Application April 18, 1932, Serial No. 605,998, and in Italy April 17,- 1931 (Granted under the provisions of sec. 14, act of March 2, 1927; 357 0. G.
3 Claims; (01. 220-47) This invention relates to the closing devices V for pressure resisting containers and especially for cooking pots for domestic as well as for industrial use, and its main object is to provide a 5 closing system that is simple, to be relied upon and adapted to avoid that the cover of the pot may be blown off when a pressure exists in the .pot.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved closing system especially adapted for pressure cooking pots, by which a perfect closure is attained by an absolutely equal compression of the tightening. ring fitted to the cover rim.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved closing system that is suitable for use on large pots or industrial pressure cooking containers, in which the closure is obtained almost instantaneously and by a minimum force.
Some embodiments of the invention are shown on the annexed drawing, in which: 1
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the upper portion of a pressure pot fitted with the improved closure of the invention; I
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same;
Figure 3 shows another embodiment of the invention for small pots or for pots of elongated section; L
Figure 4 shows a simplified system for relatively small pots; and
01 the pot. The upper ends of said brackets are forked and the prongs of the iorked end of bracket 2 are provided with a transversal stud 4 for engagement with the end notch 5 of the yoke 6. This yoke is formed at its centre portion with a suitable projection 7 adapted to bear against suitable abutment members, and in the present instance, against the inner ends of a number of balance levers 8 fulcrumed to suitable posts 9 rigidly attached to the cover 10. The outer ends of these levers 8 carry hooks 11 pivotally attached thereto and adapted toengage the underside of the projecting flange of the pot. The pressure of yoke 6, through its projection 7, against the abutment ends of levers 8 is controlled cam lever 13 the pivots-14 of which engage in a seat formed at the forked end of bracket 3.
By the just described system, by setting the cover 10 on 'the pot 1, the hooks 11 engage the underside of the projecting border of the pot. The lever 6 is then fitted in place by inserting its notch 5 under the stud 4 so that the projection 7 abuts against the inner ends of levers 8. Then the cam lever 13 is set in place by inserting its pivots 14 through the mouth 15 of their seats. In order to permit this insertion, the pivots are formed preferably as shown in detail in Figure 5 i. e. a portion thereof is cut away, to allow the insertion of the said pivots or their egress only at or near the opening position of the lever 13.
It is apparent that by this system the cover 10 cannot be blown away by internal pressure, as even if lever 13 were open while a certain pressure is in the pot, the cut pivots 14 during their movement to the opening position would be pressed against the top end of their seats and thus in the opening position of lever 13, the edges of the pivots 14 at the out side thereof would be slightly above the upper edge' of the seat mouth 15.
This just described system is especially adapted for pressure pots of large dimensions, in which a thoroughly equal pressure of the crown of coacting hooks 11. and posts 9 on the cover, due to the engagement with the part 12, is ensured.
Another embodiment of the closing system for pressure pots employing a pair of balance'levers- 8 fulcrumed on to posts 9 rigidlyfastened to the cover 10 is shown in Figure 3. In this case,'after having set the cover 10,- it is rotated to bring the levers 8 under the lugs 16 formed under the forked ends 01 ' brackets 2 and 3. Then the cam lever 13is inserted and is rotated through about 270, as in the former instance. The tightening takes place by transmission of the force on to the posts 9 and through these vertically on the cover. It is evident that, in this case, the fulcrum of the levers 8, while their outer end is engaged under 16, comes to be just at this end.
In Figure 4 a further embodiment is shown for small cook pots for family use.
Even by this embodiment the brackets 2 and 3 are rigidly attached to the sides of the pot, and the yoke 6 through a suitable projecting member presses to the center of the cover. Also in this case the engagement of the yoke 6 and the form and method of fitting of the cam lever 13 are the same as in the previous cases and this lever, having been arranged at the end of yoke 6 and bycoming to its maximum excentricity only after about of'a tum from the idle position (shown in Figure 4), the force that is necessary for tightly closing the cover becomes insignificant.
It is apparent that the above described device may be widely varied though remaining within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a. system for tightly closing pressure pots and like containers, a pair of opposite brackets rigidly attached to the pot and having forked ends, a stud connecting the prongs of the forked ends of one of the brackets, pivot hearings on the other bracket having entrance slots, a cam lever having rigid pivots cut partially along a plane parallel to their axis and in the direction of the arm of the lever and adapted to be inserted in the said slots only in the position of minimum excentration of the said cam, a yoke having a notch at one end for engaging said stud and having the other end engaged by the cam lever, a cover for the pot adapted to tightly close the said pot, and means on the cover adapted to coact with the center of the said yoke and to tightly close the cover of the pot when being depressed by the said yoke upon operation of the said cam lever in one direction and to release the pressure on the cover of the pot when turned in opposite direction, the whole being so arranged as to permit the egress of the cut pivots of said cam lever only in case no upward pressure is exerted through said yoke on the cam lever.
-2. A system for closing pressure cooking pots according to claim 1, in which the means for transmitting the closing pressure to the cover of the pot comprise a projection on the middle portion of said yoke, and a number of balance levers fitted radially on suitable posts fastened to tne cover of the pots and having their inner ends adapted for cooperation with the middle projection of the yoke, while their outer ends are adapted to engage a part integral of the cooking pot.
3. A system for closing pressure cooking pots according to' claim 1, in which the means for transmitting the closing pressure to the cover of the pot comprise a projection at the middle portion of the said yoke, a pair of balance levers diametrically fitted on suitable posts fastened to the cover of the pot and having their inner ends adapted for co-operation with the middle projection of the yoke and projecting lugs on the said rigid brackets under which the outer balancelever ends engage.
