SEAL
Filed Sept. 14. 1932 INVENTOR ATTORN EY Patented Feb. 6, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT QFFEQE Application September 14, 1932 Serial No. 633,068
2 Claims.
This invention relates to seals and the method of making the same, and is an improvement upon the disclosure of Patent No. 1,821,418 of September 1, 1931.
In the accompanying drawing the invention is disclosed in a concrete and'preferred form in which:
Fig. 1 is a view in elevation of what may be called the interior of a seal, embodying the inm vention;
Fig. 2 is a View in elevation of what may be called the exterior of the seal of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an edge view of the seal shown in Figs. 1 and 2;
Fig. 4 is a view in elevation of the seal when partly folded;
Fig. 5 is a view in elevation of the seal when fully folded.
In the patent aforesaid is shown a seal composed of two members with which is associated a double-strand cord that is tightened around a bag or other medium to be sealed when the members are folded together. One of the members carries a tongue which is folded over the 5 other member, and in practice it has been found that said tongue, being devoid of effective looking means and being on one of the exposed sides of the seal, is apt to be torn off accidentally when handling the bag to which the seal is attached.
One object and feature of the invention is to render the device of said patent more secure by providing effective locking means for the tongue aforesaid.
Also, in the construction of the patent aforesaid, it has been found that if the cord is tied with but a single knot it is possible to pull the cord out thereby defeating the purpose of the seal.
Another object and feature of the invention is to provide means whereby when but a single knot is tied in the cord it will not be possible to withdraw the cord.
The seal consists of a blank of sheet material composed of two members 1 and 2 connected by means of a weakened zone 3. Said members are adapted to receive through holes 10 and 11 a double-strand cord 12 as illustrated in the drawing. Said members are dished and therefore when folded together along zone 3 leave a space between them. Member 1 has, in that surface which is exposed when the members are folded together, a recess 4 extending to the free end of the member, and is further provided with an opening 5 in said recess. Member 2 is provided, at its free end, with a tongue 6 which is to be bent, along zone 7, over the free end of member 1, and when so bent said tongue lies within recess 4 of member 1. The tongue is provided with a soft-metal rivet 8 that enters opening 5 when said tongue is folded over the freeend of member 1, after which the seal is compressed thereby expanding the soft-metal rivet in the space betweenthe members. It will thus be seen that the tongue is securely locked and also that it lies within a recess in the outer surface of the seal so that it is not likely to be accidentally torn off. Member 1 is further provided with a slot 9 that here extends from opening 5 to the edge of the member. It will now be understood that the free ends of the cord, after passing through holes 11, are passed through slot 9 in a reverse direction as shown in Fig. 4, so that when tongue 6 is bent over member 1 and rivet 8 enters opening 5 and is expanded, the cord will be effectually sealed notwithstanding the fact that it has been tied with but a single knot.
This application is a continuation in part of application Ser. No. 602,000, filed March 30, 1932.
I claim:
1. A seal comprising: a body of sheet material composed of two connected members to be folded together in spaced relation; one of said members having, in that surface which is exposed when the members are folded together, a recess extending to the free end of the member, and having further an opening in said recess; and the other of said members having, at its free end, a tongue to be bent over the free end of the first member to thereby lie within the recess aforesaid, said tongue having a soft-metal rivet to enter, when said tongue is folded as aforesaid, the opening in the first member and to be expanded in the space between the members.
2. A seal comprising: a body of sheet material composed of two connected members, each of said members having two holes for the reception of a double-strand flexible sealing means, one of said members having an opening, and having a slot, for the reverse threading of the flexible sealing means, extending from said opening to the free end of the member, and the other one of said members having, at its free end, a tongue to be bent over the free end of the first member, and a soft-metal rivet carried by said tongue to enter, when said tongue is folded as aforesaid, the opening in the first member and to be expanded to hold the reversely threaded free ends of the cord.
