. IMPROVEMENT IN HATS AND CAPS,

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,490, dated August 21, 1877;

application filed February 7, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR B. WARING, of Yonkers, in the countyof Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hats and Caps; and I' do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.

This invention consists of a hat or cap composed of a knitted body of some fabric capable of felting and fulling, said body being of a form approaching to that of the finished hat or cap, in combination with a bat of felt, the two being thoroughly incorporated by felting and fulling, so as to form one-homogeneous article, substantially as set forth.

ln the drawing, Figure l represents a perspective view of my improved hat, and Fig. 2 a sectional view thereof.

The letter a represents the outer or external body, which may be made in one or more pieces of a shape approximating the finished hat, and b the inner body, composed ot'ra bat of felt of similar shape to that of the outer body.

In the construction of the hat or cap a bat ot' wool, fur, or other material, such as is produced for an ordinary hat, is irst formed, and while on the former on which it has been produced, or while upon another employed for the purpose. it is covered wholly or in part with a body of similar shape, composed of woven or knitted fabric, of such nature as to be capable of fulling. The knitted body may be formed in one piece or in several pieces of proper shape. The two bodies are then submitted together to the hardening and felting processes in the same manner as the ordinary fur or'wool body, by which they are firmly incorporated and united into one body, which is afterward finished in the usual manner.

The knitted or woven fabric may be composed of wool or yarn of various colors when it is desired to produce a pattern or fancy surface on the exterior of the hat or cap.

By means of my improvement an inferior stock of felt may be employed in the construction of the hat, as the woven or knitted portion gives the body the requisite tenacity and an exterior finish equal to they best felt hatsnow made, thus enabling me to produce at a small expense hats and caps equal in .appearance and durabilityto the most expensive felt hats as heretofore produced.

I am aware that woven and knitted fabrics have been incorporated with sheets of felt to produce various shaped and colored designs upon the same; but this I do not claim.

What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

As a new article ofmanufacture, a hat or cap oonsisting'of abody of knitted material capable of fulling, and in a form to that of the finished article, and a bat or body of felt, the two being thoroughly incorporated by felting and falling, substantially as herein set forth.
