1 Claim.
My invention relates to milk pails, having more particular reference to sanitary pails of this character.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide a milk pail with closed top portion provided with an inset chamber for initial reception of the milk, by which foreign matter can be excluded from the body of the pail with consequent improved sanitary arrangement for milking purposes; and in addition to provide a flanged filler opening communicating between the inset chamber and body of the pail that permits of retaining a layer of milk in the inset chamber, serving to prevent splashing during the milking process, and to prevent the foreign matter from being drained into the body of the pail.
A further object of my invention is to provide a fluid tight connection between the inset chamber and body of the pail, that permits removal of the chamber and connection parts, and to provide clamping members for attachment of said parts together. I further provide an automatic valvular arrangement for the filler opening in the inset chamber to prevent loss of milk in event of the pail being upset.
Other objects of my invention will become apparent from the accompanying description taken in conjunction with the drawing wherein like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the different views, and wherein:

Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of same, illustrated as taken on a line 2--2 of Figure 3.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the pail.
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the body of the pail shown without the inset chamber and packing rings.

Fig. 6 is a front view, partly broken away, of a pail embodying my invention and in which the body of the pail is shown with a straight side wall.
Having reference to the accompanying drawing my improved milk pail includes a body 1, which may be formed with inclined side wall, as illustrated in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, or with a straight side wall as shown in Figure 6, said body being mounted on a base 2. Partially covering the top portion of the body 1 is a hood 3, formed as a permanent part of the body unit and provided along its inner edge with an upstanding flange 4, said flange, together with the remaining upper edge portion of the pail body, defining a circular opening 5. Said rim and flange portions could be beaded or reinforced if desired.
On the rim of the opening 5 is an annular ring 6, having its peripheral portions downwardly curved as viewed in vertical cross section, and 0 providing an inner depending flange portion 7. Interposed between the ring 6 and rim of the opening 5 is an annular packing or gasket 8, preferably of rubber, which is curved to provide a fluid tight connection therebetween, said ring and packing being removable.
In the opening defined by the inner flange 7 of the ring 6 is an inset chamber 9, which is sweated or otherwise secured to the flange 7. The said chamber 9 has its under side closed by a bottom 0 portion 10. The said bottom portion 10 of the inset chamber is provided with a filler opening 11 in which is mounted an upstanding tubular member 12 which projects above the bottom 10 and has its upper end cut diagonally inwards and downwards as indicated at 13. This provides for maintaining a layer of mlk in the inset chamber during the milking process, such layer together with the foam normally accumulating thereon serving to prevent splashing and also to S0 allow foreign particles to accumulate therein and not drain into the body of the pail through the filler opening.
The upper portion of the chamber 9 is inwardly curved providing a flange 14 leaving a central milking opening as indicated at 15. In the flange 14 aligned with the filler opening 11 is an opening 16 on which a lead ball, or similar weight 1'7, is adapted to be supported. From the weight 1'? depends a flexible member 18 which extends through the opening 11 and has suspended thereon below said opening a ball 19 of rubber or similar material, which is adapted for closing said opening 11 by being drawn upward by displacement of the weight 1'7, so that in event of the pail being upset the milk will be unable to escape through the filler opening.
For attachment of the inset chamber to the body of the pail hinged clamping devices are provided, on opposite sides of the pail. Each of 10 these consists of a strap 20 oppositely bifurcated for hinged attachm nt on the one part of a strap 21 by a pin 22, said strap 21 being secured to the inset chamber 9. To the other part of the strap 22 hingedly attaches a clamping member 23 by a 9 pin 24, said clamping member being provided with an inwardly projecting linger 25, and a depending hook shaped member 26 for its manipulation.
On opposite sides of the body 1 of the pail are 1 attached fastening members or brackets for cooperation with said clamping devices each of which includes vertical and horizontal portions, respectively indicated at 2'7 and 28, the vertical portion 2'7 being attached to the body 1, and the horizontal portion 28 laterally, and somewhat downwardly, extending for engagement by the finger 25. For removal of the inset chamber it is necessary to disengage each of the fingers 25 from the horizontal portions 28 of the brackets and turn the straps 20 outward, clearing the inset chamber for attachment to the body 1 and allowing its removal together with the ring 6 and packing ring 8.
On opposite sides of the body 1 are handle receiving ears 29 and 30 for attachment of a handle 31 by means of staples 32' and 32.
While I have herein described a preferred embodiment of my invention including specific de tails as to the manner and method of constructing and assembling the elements of my invention, it is understood that I may vary from the same so as to best construct a practical device for the purpose as defined in the appended claim.
That I claim is:
A milk pail comprising a body having a hood extending partially over its upper portion leaving an opening, an inset chamber detachably supported in said opening, said chamber having a filler opening directed into the body of the pail, and an inwardly extending curved peripheral flange leaving a milking opening, said flange being formed with an opening aligned with the filler opening, a weight adapted to be supported above the opening in said flange, a flexible member depending from said weight and extending through the flange and filler openings, a resilient ball suspended from said flexible member below the filler opening and adapted on displacement of said weight to close said opening, and fastening devices for detachably securing said inset chamber to the body of the pail.
