Description

Patented Jan. 9, 1934 UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE 1,942,509 nnrmcmaroa noon covsnme ATTACH- KENT Application mm a, 1930. Serial No. 500,002
a Claim. (01. 20-35) This invention relates to a refrigerator door covering attachment which is designed to hold the exterior door covering to the frame.
A feature of the door covering holding means 6 resides in a bracket member made of an angularly shaped member which is adapted to engage against the flange of a gasket such as is ordinarily used in the construction of refrigerator doors. The gasket flange provides a cushioning means 10 for the plate of the angle member which is attached to the door frame, while the bead of the gasket extends along the edge of the door covering and the wood frame to form a sealing means for providing the necessary seal about a door frame and to form a cushion for the contacting edge of the door against the refrigerator body.
The door clip may be formed of an angular member or it may be in the form of a lug or hearing having the desired length to provide the necessary strength for firmly supporting the door covering which is usually made of enamelled metal to the door frame proper which in some cases is made of wood. It is desirable to form refrigerator doors with an exterior enamelled sheathing which may be termed the door pan or covering and also an inner sheathing or cover. Each of these members are made of metal and are enamelled to protect the surface of the same. The enamel of these pans may be of any character and is usually of a color to match the rest of the refrigerator or the body which is covered with an enamelled sheathing. The interior of the door as well as the refrigerator is made of insulating material and in the door it is the frame and may be made of any insulating material such as wood or other nonconducting substance which is not readily susceptible to heat or cold. In making the doors of the refrigerator it is desirable to have the outer sheathing covering or pan held along the free edge of the door by clips such as we will more fully herein describe and set forth, while the other side of the door is held by the hinges. The outer door covering or pan is formed with an intumed edge and all of the surface of the door covering including the intumed edge is enamelled.
It is desirable that the enamelled intumed edge of the door shall not come in contact with the enamelled surface of the refrigerator body. A gasket having a projecting head or cushion is ordinarily secured to the edge of the door frame and we provide a door clip either of an angular bar nature or in the form of a lug bar to engage beneath the intumed flange to hold the sheathing of the door in place. These clips may be secured along the edge of the door frame.
Other details and features will be more fully. and clearly set forth in the specification and claims.
In the drawing forming part of this specification:
Figure 1 illustrates a portion 'of a refrigerator with our door secured thereto, wherein the construction of holding means for the door covering is employed. I
Figure 2 is a perspective detail partly in section, showing the use and location of our door clip bar.
Figure 3 illustrates another form of the clip bar and is a sectional detail of a portion of a refrigerator door.
The drawing illustrates the refrigerator body 70 A which may be of any suitable form and construction designed to provide a refrigerating and food compartment such as B divided and fitted with supporting pans of any desired nature. The refrigerator A is formed with a door opening C in which the door D is adapted to operate to open and close the refrigerator A.
The door D is supported by the hinges 10 on one side and is secured by the locking mechanism 11 on the other side.
In the door D" the inner frame may be formed of wood or otherinsulating material, and is provided with frame rails 12 which extend about to form the rectangular frame of the door and to which the innerrails 13 are secured to give the desired thickness to the door frame. Suitable insulating material such as 14 may be placed in the center of the frame 12 to build up the door frame with the proper insulating structure. The inside of the wooden frame of the door D is adapted to be covered by the sheathing or pan 15 which is made of enamelled metal and which is secured to the door frame members in any suitable manner.
The outside of the door D is adapted to be covered by the metal sheathing 16 which is enamelled in a similar manner to the sheathing 15. The sheathing 16 which covers the entire outer surface of the door insulating frame made up of the portions 12 and 13 and the insulation 14 is formed with an intumed peripheral flange 1'7 which extends around the ends 18 of the frame portions 12 and which is formed with an inwardly extending marginal flange 19 which extends virtually up to the edge 18 of the frame members 12. The flanges 17 and 19 form the finishing edge of the outer covering 16 of the door D so as to extend the enamelled finish from the outer face around the edge of the door up to the members 12.
A gasketmember E which is formed with a projecting bead or cushion 20 and an attaching flange 21 is secured around the edge of the, door frame. This gasket has the bead member 20 5 positioned to bear against the surface of the rails 12 of the door frame and also cover and bear against the inner edge 22 of the flange 19. In this manner the gasket E forms a cushion between the frame rails 12 and the flange 19 of the outer covering 16 and also provides a gasket cushion for sealing the door D against the outer surface of the refrigerator A to make the door as nearly air-tight as possible and also to prevent the enamelled flange 19 of the door from striking the enamelled surface on the body of the refrigerator A.
We provide an angle iron clip F which is held by the screws 23 against the flange 21 of the gasket E and bearing against the edge 18 of -the door frame. This clip F or clip bar is adapted to be of sufficient length to provide the necessary rigid engagement between the door frame and the covering 16 to hold the door covering or pan 16 firmly in place against the slamming 25 of the door and virtually; any use to which the door is subjected as a closure on the refrigerator A. One or more-of these clips F may be used and it will be obious that in larger doors more clips are required than on smaller doors and the length of the clip may be proportioned to the size of the door.
The clip F is formed with a flange 24 which extends under and engages the flanges 19. This flange 24 is of a narrow'nature, and in fact, is
preferably of a slightly less width than the width of the flange 19, or at least not greater than the inside width of the flange 19. The clip F is formed with a wider flangesuch-as 25 through which the screws 23 extend and which bears 40 against the flange 21 of the gasket E. The gasket forms a cushion for this flange andcompensates for any inequalities in the engagement of the clip F with the flange 19. I
The clip may be made in the bar form of wood, metal, bakelite or other suitable material, such as F, illustrated in Figure 3, and in this form it is a rectangular bar which is adapted to be held by the screws 26 extending into the edge of the member 12. This bar clip F' may be .of
any suitable lengthand operates in the same manner as the clip F. r
With these clips, such as F, the outer door sheathing or covering 16 may be hooked upon the door frame made up ofthe rails 12 and 13 on the side of the door opposite the hinges 10. The covering is then brought over the other side of the door and by means of the screws of the door hinges 10, it is held firmly in place. Should it be desired to remove the door covering this may be quickly done by removing the screws which hold the door hinges to the door D. A deadening felt such as 27 is placed between the inner frame of the door D and the outer covering 16. This also provides an insulation between the door covering or pan 16 and the frame made up of the members 12 and 13 and also provides a desirable cushion. With our clipconstruction, door coverings or pans 16 may be easily attached or removed during inspection 73 or in the construction of the refrigerator doors D and the nature of our clip provides a strong durable support secured to and projecting from the edge of the door frame to hold the covering a of the free side of the door D firmly in place.
In accordance with the patent statu es we have described the principles of 'our refrigerator door covering attachment and we have',endeavored to represent the best embodiment thereof. The drawing is illustrative and the same. may be carried out by other means and applied to other uses within the scope of the following 1 claims, v
