Description
H. G. HAYES Jan. 2, 1934.
ATTACHMENT FOR REMOVING CIGARETTES FROM CIGARETTE PACKAGES Filed June 16, 1932 Patented Jan. 2, 1934 UNITED STATES ATTACHMENT FOR R E M O V I N G CIGA- RETTES FROM CIGARETTE PACKAGES Herman G. Hayes, Twin Falls, Idaho Application June 16, 1932. Serial No. 617,670
3 Claims.
It is a known fact that it is a difiicult matter to remove cigarettes from a freshly opened package without breaking or tearing the cigarettes, because the cigarettes are packed so tightly that they may be removed only with considerable effort, and are often broken at their ends.
It is therefore the object of the present invention to provide means whereby cigarettes may be extended from the open end of the cigarette package, by merely exerting pressure on the bottom edges of the package, at a point directly under the opening in the top of the package.
An important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be constructed at low cost, so that it may be packed with cigarettes, without increasing the cost of the cigarettes.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
. Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a package of cigarettes illustrating an attachment constructed in accordance with the invention, as packed therein.
Figure 2 is a perspective view illustrating the attachment in its position when operated to extend cigarettes beyond the open end of a package.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the attachment.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates a package of cigarettes, which is of the usual and well known construction, the cigarettes of the package which are shown in dotted lines, being indicated by the reference character 6.
The attachment forming the essence of the invention, and which is shown more clearly by Figure 3 of the drawing, includes a body portion 7 which is constructed of celluloid, or other suitable flexible sheet material, the length and width of the body portion being such that the device will exactly fit within the bottom of a cigarette package.
As shown, the body portion is cut away along one of its side edges providing flexible end members 8 and 9 respectively, which end members permit the ready flexing of the body portion, to the end that only the cigarettes contacting with the end member flexed, are moved outwardly, when pressure is directed to the bottom edges of the package, thereby leaving the remaining cigarettes of the package undisturbed.
As before stated, it is contemplated to include a body portion of this character with each package of cigarettes, the body portion being placed during the packing of the cigarettes.
It follows that when a portion of the upper end of a cigarette package is torn away in opening the package in the usual manner, the cigarettes directly under the opening may be extended beyond the remaining cigarettes of the package, by exerting a pressure on the side edges of the bottom of the package bulging the end member, directly under the opening in a manner as shown by Figure 2.
After one or more cigarettes have been removed, the remaining cigarettes may be removed without the necessity of operating the body portion as described.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed:
1. In a device of the class described, a flat body portion formed of flexible material and of a size to fit between the lower ends of cigarettes and the package in which the cigarettes are contained, said body portion having a cut out portion formed along one edge thereof only, defining flexible end members extending laterally from the body portion in one direction and adapted to bend transversely causing the central portions thereof to bulge upwardly when the ends of the end members are pressed inwardly, thereby elevating certain of the cigarettes above the remaining cigarettes.
2. In a device of the class described, abody portion formed of a length of flexible sheet material, one edge of the body portion being cut away, defining end members extending from the body portion in one direction, said end members defining elevating members adapted to bulge when the ends of the elevating members are pressed inwardly, thereby forcing certain of the cigarettes above the remaining cigarettes of the package.
3. In a device of the class described, a fiat body portion having a straight edge extending throughout the length thereof, a portion of the opposite edge being cut away defining flexible end members and a narrow connecting strip, the flexible end members extending laterally in one direction from the connecting strip which is disposed along one edge of the body portion, said body portion adapted to be positioned within a cigarette package between the bottom of the package and ends of the cigarettes, and said flexible end members adapted to force certain of the cigarettes above the remaining cigarettes when the ends of the flexible end members are pressed towards each other.
