IMPROVEMENT IN CAR-COUPLINGS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,054, dated August 14, 1877; application tiled February 20, 1877.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FEREOL ROY, of Amherstburg, in the county of Essex and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gar- Couplings; and I do declare that tha-following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part ot' this specification.
Figure l is a perspective View of a drawbar with the pin sustained ready for coupling, showing also the device on the opposing'car for dropping the pin. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section, showing position ol' parts when the pin is dropped through the drawhead.
The object I have in view is to provide the car-coupling in common use with a device which will sustain the pin above a link, and, in combination therewith, an attachment to the end of the car which will, when the two cars come together, release said pin and allow it to drop through an entering link to complete the coupling.
In the drawing, A represents an ordinary draw-head, and B its pin. C U are two plates ot spring-steel, which are secured to the cheeks of the draw-head, with their upper ends bent inwardly and downwardly, as at a, with a central hole to receive the shank of the pin B, but will arrest its head unless spread laterally apart therefrom. An outwardly Haring lip, b, is formed on the front edge of each spring-plate G.
D is a wedge shaped plate, with a slot, c, in the center, extending to the front end., said slot being wide enough to allow the head of the pin to drop through it.
One of these plates is secured to one end of each car, and when the cars come together the said plate, entering betweenthe lips, will spread the plates apart, releasing the pin, which then drops through the end of a link entering the draw-head.
The plates can be itted to any existing drawhead, and if an opposing car is not itted with the wedge-'plate the coupling can be efected by hand, as heretofore.
What I. claim as my invention is- The combination, with a draw bar, A, of the spring-plate G U, for sustaining the coupling-pin, and the wedge-plate D, for releasing the pin, substantially as described.
