FIG.

IMPROVEMENT IN Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.
CAR-COUPLINGS.
monos, dated May 12, 1874; application sied April l0, 1874.
To all whom it may concern: A
Beit known that I, HENRY E. MARCHAND, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Gouplings, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to certain improvements upon that class of car-couplings in which a vibrating or gravitating trigger is employed for retaining the coupling-pin in an elevated position until the link, entering the draw-head, forces the trigger back to permit the pin to drop.
This invention consists in the arrangement the upper side of the draw-bar, a sliding coupling-pin permanently arranged in the drawbar, and a link which is copfned in place and prevented from displacement by the trigger, as hereinafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of a draw-head, representing the coupling-pin in an elevated position. Fig. 2 is a similar view, representing the coupling-link and trigger in an operative position, and the permanent couplinglink withdrawn from theV draw-bar. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the draw-head. j
The draw head or bar A is of the usual construction, and in the top and bottom of the salne are formed eyes and' slots B C, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3. The eye in the base of the'draw-head is made larger than the upper one, so as to permit the vibrating triggerpin l) to be passed entirely. The `same and `the upper eye is made sufficiently large to permit the passage of the upp'er reduced portion or shank E of the 'vibrating trigger. The upper end of the triggeris provided with lateral projections F, whichrest on opposite sides of e of the slot B in the top of the draw-head, so
the same, and also to act as journal pins or bearings, upon which the trigger vlbrates. 'Ihe trigger is provided, at its lower end, with within the lower' slot C, so as to limit the backward movement of the trigger by causing the beak to strike the rear wall of the slot when the trigger is forced-back. The coupling -pin H is formed, at its upper end, with the ordinary head a., vso as to limit the downward movement of the pin, and at its lower end it possesses a head, I, which is formed or applied after the pin has been passed through the draw-head, so as to prevent the pin from being entirely withdrawn through the top of the same. The head or flange may be formed by riveting the lower end of the pin, or a detachable head may be applied to the latter by a screw-connection or otherwise. The permanent link K of the draw-barV is applied in positionbefore the attachment of the trigger and coupling-pin, the trigger limiting the forward movement of the link and preventing the same from being withdrawn; and, when the link is in operation, the trigger and pin will conjointly serve to receive the draft-strain to which the link is subjected. The coupling-link is provided with a tongue, L, at its rear end, which enters an opening, M, in the base of the draw-l bar, when the link is pushed back into the same, as shown in Fig. l. rIhe vibrating trigger suspended from the top of the draw-head will always tend to swing in a forward direction whenever the pin is elevated, and thus it automatically serves to set the pin readyfor coupling by causing a projecting shoulder or ledge, N, on the forward face of the trigger, to swing under the lower head or lian ge of the coupling-pin. I
When the pin is thus set, the entering link` of an opposite draw-bar will force the trigger in a backward direction, so as to remove the support from the pin in order to permit the same to drop through the link and the eye in the bottom of the draw-bar.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- A draw-bar having atrigger, a couplingpin, and a link, the link permanently held within the draw-bar by the trigger, and the trigger permanently confined in place,V by the coupling-pin, all combined substantially as described. I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of March, V1874.
HENRY E. MARCHAND.
