Description
Dec. 19, 1933. 1.. w. SUTHERLAND CONTAINER Filed April 6, 1952 INVENTOR BY 91 WP ATTORNEY-S Patented Dec. 19, 1933 CONTAINER -.Louis @W. Sutherland,
signor tov Sutherland mazoo, Mich.
Kalamazoo, Mich., as- Paper Company, Kala- Application April 6, 1932. Serial No. 603,479
9 Claims.
The main objects of this invention. are: First, to provide a container which is well adapted for food products which'may be very vantages which is very strong and rigid in con-,
struction, even when made of comparatively light material, and one in which the cover or closure is securely retained.
Objects pertaining to details and economies of my invention will appear from the description tov follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a satisfactory embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a container embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the container partly opened, showing the first step in removing the closure. 1
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the closure.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary'vertical section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary vertical section taken on line 5--5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary vertical section taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 4,
Fig. 7 is a top plan view of the'container out before folding.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a container embodying the invention. In the embodiment illustrated the container is formed of a blank comprising a bottom portion 2 having cutopposed side walls 3 extending from opposite edges thereof and joined thereto along the'score lines indicated at 6. Side Wall flaps 9 project from the other edges of the bottom 2 and are joined thereto alongthe score lines 10.
The side wall'portions 3 have outer and inner overlapping side wall extensions 4 and 5 respectively extending from their lateral edges and joined thereto along the score lines 7 and 8. The side walls 3 and the inner' side wall extensions 5 have inwardly projecting beads 12 spaced from their upper edges and providing ledges or supporting shoulders for the cover or closure 14.
The inner side wall extensions5 have spaced slits extending from their upper edges to the beads providing tongues13 adapted to be folded inwardly to a horizontal position as shown in Fig. 4 to support the cover. The outer side wall extensions 4 have finger notches 20 therein alined with the tongues 13 to facilitate the engagement of these tongues to swing them down to coversupporting position when the cover is to be inserted;
The cover 14 is provided with flanges 15 on its edges, the cover being scored at the bases of the flanges as at 16 to facilitate the inserting of the cover or the bending of the flanges at the proper point. At the base of an exposed pair of flanges the cover is provided with slits 21 adapted to receive the tongues 19 on the edges of the coverretaining flaps 17. These cover-retaining flaps 17 extend from the upper edges of the side walls 3, the scores 18 at the bases of. the flaps facilitating the folding thereof over the cover flanges as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 4 and 5, thereby effectively locking the cover in place.
The cover, being supported by the beads and cover supports 13, is not easily pushed inward, and is properly positioned to receive the retaining flaps 17 so that in assembling the cover it is only necessary to insert the cover upon the supports and swing the flaps 17 inwardly, pressing them against the adjacent cover flanges which causes the tongues or tabs 19 to snap into the slits, effectively securing the cover.
When it is desired to open the, container the upper edges of the side walls 3, or the side walls having the cover retaining flaps therein, are grasped and forcibly pulled outwardly, breaking down the container at the corner as shown in Fig. 2 so that the cover can be readily lifted out. The finger notches 20 facilitate the grasping of the cover after it has been released as shown in Fig. 2 as well as constituting means for facilitating the adjustment of the tongues 13.
' The container strong and rigid by virtue of its construction, and it is impossible for the cover to fall off or even, be forced off. without going through the cover-removingoperations described. With this construction the container may be packed upside down without the possibility of the cover being released. The device is also simple and compact in its parts and economical to manufacture.
. I have illustrated and described my improvements in an embodiment which I have found very practical. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe other embodiments or adaptations-as it is believed this disclosure will enable those skilled in the art to embody or adapt my improvements as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
