No. 193,898. Patented Aug. 7,1877.

UNITED STATES ATET FFroE.
HOMER SHERMAN, OF FLUSHING, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT m COMBINED DIVIDERS AND SIDING-HOOK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,898, dated August 7, 1877; application filed April 2, 1877.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOMER SHERMAN, of Flushing, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Oombined Dividers and Siding-Hook, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a top view, and Fig. 2 a horizontal section on line as as, Fig. 1, of my improved dividers and siding-hook combined.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish for carpenters an improved tool that combines the advantages of a pair of dividers and of a I siding-hook with a marking knife-scale,bevelsquare, &c., forming a simple and handy implement for cutting and marking boards in siding and wainscotiug.
The invention consists of a siding-hook having a straight back and a fixed point, in combination with a pivoted divider-deg, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawing, A represents a siding-hook of the usual shape and size, which is provided at one end with a fixed projecting point, B, that serves, in connection with the hook A, as one leg of a pair of dividers, while the second movable leg, B, is pivoted to the opposite end of the hook, and guided by an arc-shaped arm, a, in a slot of the hook, the movable leg B being clamped into fixed position by a setscrew, b, bearing on the arm a, in the customary manner.
The siding-hook A is provided at the face part with .raised guide-strips O, that are secured in suitable manner at the ends, and (lesigned for the purpose of guiding apointed marking knife, D, across the boards, the knife D being adjustable by slot and setscrew in a base-plate, D having a button,D
A curved piece, d, below the button bears against the guide-strips, and admits sliding of the knife in inclined position to the strips, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the marking-knife projects just far enough beyond the edge of the siding-hook to cut a marking-line on the board.
The tool may be used as common dividers, or for setting off bevels and squares, by the swinging leg, when the straight back of the siding-hook is placed against the edge of the board, or it may also be employed in siding, as dividers, hook, and marking-knife may be used at will, and for wainscoting, and for other applications in carpentry.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the siding-hook A, having a straight back, a fixed point, B, at one end, and a half-kn uckle joint at the other end, with the pivoted divider-leg B, provided with a half-knuckle joint, as and for the purpose set forth.
HOMER SHERMAN.
