In boiler furnaces, and particularly in furnaces for locomotive boilers, it is old to let the arch rest on tubes through which boiler water circulates.
The present invention has for its object the perfection of the means in the interior of the furnace for carrying such arches no matter in which part of the fire-box they are arranged, and is applicable not only to boilers of the ordinary type but also to those with a closed circuit.
It consists essentially in creating within the general boiler circulation a local circulation including the tubes meant to support the arch, and to provide for this purpose corresponding tubes at the lower part of the boiler to assure the return of the water from the support or arch tubes to their lower end without interfering with the general circulation system of the other boiler parts. This invention will readily be understood from the following description given with reference to the accompanying drawing and by way of illustration,

In the drawing, reference is made to a locomotive boiler with indirect heating but it will be understood that the invention is not limited either to locomotive boilers or to boilers in which the heating is done indirectly.
The water tube boiler shown in part in Figs. 1 and 2 includes a cylindrical drum 1 heated indirectly by the coils 2a, 212, whose ends are secured to the headers 3a, 4a and 3b, 4b respectively. Between these headers are arranged in a known manner the lines of tubes 5a and 6a forming the walls of the fire-box. The upper headers and the lower headers mentioned above are connected by the transverse headers '7, 8 and 9.
The arch 10 rests in a known manner on the tubes 11 extending from the header 7 to the header 9 and its rear extremity abuts against the tubes 12 which connect the headers 9 and 13. In accordance with the invention, a local circulation is established comprising the tubes 11 by providing, preferably although not necessarily, approximately in the plane of each of them, supplementary tubes 14 and 15 extending from header to header or, if desired, connected end to end. Thus, the header 8 may be omitted and each pair of tubes 14, 15 may be connected directly.
In Figs. 3 and 4, the same reference numerals refer to the same parts as they do in Figs. 1 and 2 and the arch 10 is shown as supported on the transverse bent tubes 16a and 16b running from headers 3a and 3b to 4b and 4a respectively. It is provided with return tubes 17a, 17b, 18a, 18b establishing as in the former case local circulation independently of the circulation of the remainder of the boiler for the water which flows through the supporting tubes 16a,16b.
It goes without saying that modifications or details may be made in these arrangements above described, without leaving the frame of the present invention, and in particular the supporting tubes may be used for any other purpose than that described and may be installed in any other part of the boiler.
What I claim is:
1. In a boiler of the type referred to, the combination of a fire box having two pairs of diagonally opposite upper and lower water chambers, two sets of arch tubes each connecting one pair of said water chambers, vertical downcomer tubes the same in number as said arch tubes and so arranged that their upper ends receive substantially directly the water discharged by said arch tubes into the upper of said water chambers, and horizontal tubes equal in number to said downcomer tubes and each arranged to receive substantially directly water delivered by one of said downcomers and to conduct such water beneath said fire box from one of said lower water chambers to the other so as to deliver the water flowing therethru immediately below the arch tube by which it was delivered to one of the upper water chambers.
2. In a boiler of the type referred to, the combination of a fire box, a pair of diagonally opposite upper and lower chambers, arch tubes connecting such chambers, and means extending beneath said fire-box for returning water from said upper to said lower chamber, said means including tube portions so arranged that each receives substantially directly the water discharged by one of said arch tubes into said upper chamber and including other tube portions each delivering immediately below a given arch tube the water which was delivered by such tube to said upper chamber,
