The present invention relates to a superheater boiler and more particularly to the type in which a superheater arrangement is interposed between steam generating elements.
An object resides in arranging an interdeck' superheater between the banks of steam generating elements'in such a manner as to protect the superheater from being burned out.
Another object of the invention is to provide a boiler havingspaced banks of inclined steam generating elements with corresponding alternate, third, or fourth headers of one bank extended towards the other bank and thereby forming several sections for receiving one or more superheating units.
The invention comprises features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts, which will be exemplified in the embodiments hereinafter set forth, and for a better understanding of the nature and objects of the invention, reference should be had to the following detail description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a fragmentary elevational view of a horizontal water tube boiler embodying the present invention.

Referring to the drawing, generally designates a water tube boiler having an upper front and rear group of headers broadly indicated 11 and 12, each of which comprises a plurality of closely spaced headers as 13, 13. 1 Corresponding headers of the front and rear group are connected together by a row of spaced and inclined steam generating tubes as 145. Circulating tubes 16 connect the rear upper headers 13, 18' with a water andv steam drum 17, and downcomer 18 connects the latter with the headers of group 11.

Corresponding headers of the front and rear groups 19 and 20 are connected to a row of inclined steam generating tubes as'23 of the lower bankgenerally designated 24.
Corresponding alternate headers of the upper and lower'groups as 13 and 22 are con-' nected by a pipe 24. Likewise, corresponding and alternate headers of the upper and lower groups as l8 and 21 are connected together by relatively short nipples 25'.
Heretofore the headers associated with the lower banks of tubes of a water tube boiler hadtheir upper ends terminate substantially in the same plane, leaving quite a substantial space between the upper and lower banks of steam generating tubes.
Accordingtothe presentinventionthisspace between the banks is utilized to receive and protect an interdeck superheater and further to increase the heatingsnrfaces of the lower bank of tubes without necessarily increasing the height of the boiler. To this end, therefore, alternate headers as 21 of the front and rear groups of lower headers 19 and 20 are towards the upper bank and provide means to which additional water tubes, for example, tubes 26, 27,28 32 are secured. It should be understood that the invention is not limited to extending only alternate headers of the lower bank of tubes. For instance, every third header, instead of alternate headers may be extended above the usual level of the lower banks of tubes and provided withadditional steam generating tubes as hereinbefore set forth. This form of arrangement is illustrated in Fig. 3. Of course, as a further variation, every fourth or even fifth header'etc. may be extended upward, if desired, for properly protecting the superheater arranged disposed betwee the banks.
Interposed between the extended headers of the lower bank and between corresponding short headers as 13 and 22 of the upper and lower banks is a superheater arrangement, broadly designated 33, comprising several units and each unit 34 thereof embodies pipes arranged in the well known serpentine fashion with their ends as 35- and 86 connected respectively to the saturated steam inlet header 37 and the superheater steam outlet header 38.
The several superheating units are mounted on a transversely arranged angle iron bar 39 having one flange 4O resting on the upper boiler tubes 32 of the extended headers and fastened thereto by U-shaped bolts 41 in a manner well understood.
The upstanding flange 42 of the angle bar is provided with a plurality of sets of notches 43 in which the upper pipes as 44- of respective superheater units are seated, it being noted that the upper pipes of the units adjacent pipes 24 are ofisetslightly as at 45 in order to clear these pipes.
'Associated with the top pipes 44 of the several superheating units are a pair of spaced hangers, generally denoted 46, de
signed to carry an adjacent lower superheating pipe as 48 of a unit. Pipe 48 in turn carries the weight of an adjacent lower superheating pipe 49 of the same unit by a supplementary hanger 50 generally known in the art as a slip hanger. In like manner other pipes of the units are supported by an adjacent upper pipe by similar slip hangers. The slip hangers 50 permit longitudinal movement of one tube of a unit with respect to an adjacent pipe of the same unit due to expansion and also prevents the lower tubes from sagging. V
With the arrangement illustrated in Fig. 3, the spacing of the several units between the extended headers is slightly greater than the spacing of the units in Fig. 2 and in the modified form two units are mounted adjacent the relatively long header interconnecting pipes 24. Altho four superheating units are disposed in a section between a pair of extended headers of both modifications, it is obvious, of course, that more than four or less than four units may be inserted according to the amount of superheated steam desired. However, with either of the modifications as disclosed, the life of the superheater is lengthened in that they are located within close proximity to the water tubes and are cooled thereby.
Although the invention has been illustrated in connection with a single pass boiler, obviously it is applicable to a two or three pass boiler.
In operation, the steam generated in the spaced banks of tubes is directed to the steam and water drum 17 and from the latter the saturated steam is transmitted to the inlet header 37.
.In passing through the superheater units, the saturated steam absorbs heat from the products of combustion originating in the furnace below the lower bank of tubes and becomes superheated and collects in header 38 for delivery to a point of use.
Since certain changes may be made in the above described construction and diiierent embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a'limiting sense and the appended claims should be construed as broadly as the state of the art permits.
What I claim is:
1. In a boiler, the combination of a plurality of space-d banks of steam generating tubes each comprising rows of tubes, headers connected to corresponding ends of the several rows in a bank, alternate headers at each end of the boiler and associated with one of the banks being extended towards another bank of said plurality, steam generating tubes connecting the extended portions of corresponding headers, and a superheater arrangement disposed between the tubes connecting the extended portions of the alternate headers.
2. In a boiler, the combination of a pair of spaced banks of steam generating tubes each comprising a plurality of rows of tubes,
headers connected to corresponding ends of the several rows in a bank, several of said headers at each end of the boiler and associated with one of the banks being extended towards the other, steam generating tubes connecting the extended portions of corresponding headers, and a superheater disposed between the tubes connecting the extended portions of the headers.
8. In a boiler, the combination of upper and lower spaced banks of steam generating tubes each comprising rows of tubes, headers connected to corresponding ends of the several rows in a bank, alternate headers at each end of the boiler and associated with the lower bank being extended towards the upper bank, steam generating tubes connecting the extended portions of corresponding headers, and a superheater arrangement disposed between the tubes connecting the extended header portions.
4. In a boiler, the combination of upper and lower spaced banks of steam generating tubes each comprising rows of tubes, headers con nected to corresponding ends of the several rows in a bank, several of said headers at each end of the boiler and associated with the lower bank being extended toward the upper bank, steam generating tubes connecting the extended portions of corresponding headers of the lower bank, and a super-heater arrangement disposed between the tubes connecting the extended header portions.
5. The boiler as specified in claim 4 in which the upper tubes of extended headers are associated with means for supporting one or more superheating arrangements.
6. The boiler as specified in claim 4 characterized in that said arrangement comprises one or more superheating units.
7. The boiler as specified in claim 4L further characterized in that said arrangement includes one or more superheating units with the terminals thereof connected to other headers.
8. The boiler specified in claim 4 in which the upper tubes of the extended headers are associated with a bar for supporting several superheating arrangements.
9. The boiler as specified in claim 4 in which the upper tubes of extended headers are associated with a notched bar on which several superheating units or one or more superheating arrangements are seated.
10. The boiler specified in claim 3 in which the extended headers of the lower bank and corresponding headers of the upper bank are connected by relatively short nipples.
11. The boiler specified in claim 4 in which alternate extended headers of the lower bank and corresponding headers of the upper bank are connected together by relatively short nipples.
12. The boiler specified in claim 4: in which alternate headers of the lower bank and corresponding headers of the upper bank are connected together by relatively long nipples.
