3 Claims.
This invention relates to a pin motion for a folding couple-for a printing press and it is especially adapted for use on newspaper folding machines.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide a simple construction which will be free from the usual wear occasioned by a sliding pin holder of the ordinary type and also to provide means for producing a pin motion of such a character that when the pins come to the point for projection they will assume a leading angle and the withdrawing of the pin effects a motion of the pin point toa trailing angle to facilitate the release of the paper as it is being folded off the cylinder.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a cross section of a folding cylinder showing a preferred form of this invention applied thereto, and
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
The invention is shown as applied to a folding cylinder IO-and a cutting cylinder 11 of a folding and cutting couple. This couple works-in the usual way exceptas to the motion of the pins and on the folding cylinder the impaling pin points 12 are mounted on a pin holder 13 which is indirectly carried by a shaft 14 which has an oscillatory motion. This motion is provided by a pair of cam rollers 15 and 16 cooperating with an external cam 17 and an internal. cam 18 respectively, carried in fixed position on the frame 19 of the folder. This reduces the wear occasioned by a single cam and roller, wherein the roller contacts first with one side of the cam and then with the other, necessitating frequent reversals of a direction of rotation of the cam roller.
The cam rollers 15 and 16 are mounted on one end of a lever 20. Obviously the rotation of the folding cylinder, with the cam rollers in engagement with the cams will result in the oscillation of the lever about the center of the shaft 14.
At the end this lever 20 is provided with a pivot stud 21 on which is pivoted a lever 22. It is on this lever that the pin holder 13 is carried and also a cam roller 23. This cam roller is guided in a stationary cam 24 to rock the pin holder. The
pins, instead of having a reciprocating motion as usual, have a compound oscillatory motion which, upon'the withdrawal of the pin, necessitates a.
motion of the pin point to a trailing action. Also there is a turning of the pin to a leading angle as these pointsare projected from the cylinder.
It will be seen therefore that'with thisconstruction the mechanism is simplified and it is not subjected to the usual wear caused by the sliding pin holder guided in an opening in the" cylinder. The eiiectof the pins on theirprojec- Y tion and withdrawal is to enter the paper on a leading angle and to leave it on .a trailing angle.
Although I have illustrated and describedonly one form of the invention I am aware of the fact that modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore I do'not wish to be limited in this respect but what I do claim is:-
1. In a pin motion for a cutting and folding couple, the combination of a set of impaling pins, a pivoted lever, a pin holder therefor pivoted on the lever, and stationary means for swinging the pin holder with its pins on a moving axis. 7
2. The combination with a cylinder of a folding and cutting couple, of a lever pivotally mounted vjon the cylinder and pin points pivotally mounted on the lever, movable longitudinally therewith for impaling the paper, and means whereby, when the lever moves forward to impale the paper, the pin points turn to a leading angle and,,when the 7 pin points are moved to release the paper, the motion of the pin points is changed to a trailing angle. The combination with afolding cylinder, of a lever pivotally mounted, means for swinging the lever as the cylinder rotates, a second lever pivoted to the first lever, pin points on the second lever extending therefrom, and means for oscillating the'secondlever about its pivot so that whenthe pin points are about toimpale thepaper they come to a leading angle. e
