a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and Stateof Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Adding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its chief object to provide an attachment whereby an addingmachine, the carriage and platen of which are not automatically reciprocated endwise, may be quickly and conveniently converted into a so-called shuttle machine, in which the carriage and platen are automatically reciprocated when such reciprocation is desire w The invention is embodied in the improvements-which I will now and claim. To illustrate my invention I have shown certain elements of the well known Wales adding machine, and have designated said elements by reference letters, the elements in which my invention is embodied being designated by reference numerals.

The carriagek is moved laterally in one direction to cause a partial rotation of the platen by an outward movement of the lever 7 from the position shown by Figure 1, to that shown by Figure 2. The lever f is connected with the push-rod j in such manner that an outward movement of the lever causes an inward movement of the push-rod in the direction of arrow a; (Figure 2), this movement causing the end face 9" of the push-rod. to move the carriage rod is in the same direction, and thus impart a platen-rotating movement tothe pa-wlt.v When the lever is returned by-the spring 9 to the position shown by Figure 1, the push-rod y is moved outward, and allows the carriage rod is to be moved bygravity in the same direction, the pawl slipping back on the ratchet. The carriage a has the usual rod 17, which is fixedat its ends to thecarriage and is parallel with the platen b. By the employment of the mechanism described, I am able to transmit reciprocatory movements to the carriage and platen, when such movements are desired, smoothly and equally in all steps of movement, without shock-or 'ar at the end of movement in either direction. This is due to the cam 16, 17, and the lever which transmits movement from said cam to the carriage. With this structure, the operating mechanism has no part or member which stops on a dead center, or causes a jar. My inventlon is embodied in the extended rocker-arm 23, and in the mechanism next described, preferably constituting an attach ment which is applicable to a machine'j'com- -the carriage cam.

The parts are so pro ortioned that the platen carriage rod wil only be moved by the push rod j at each alternate forward movement of the handle 7. During the push rod y the carriage will be stationary. As,
feeding motion of the platen by the the handle j returns to the position shown in Figure 1, the cani 16 will, through the lever 37, move the carriage in one direction. Thiswill position the cam 57 so that the carriage rod in will be held beyond the path of the push rod when the handle f is next drawn forward and therefore the platen will not be rotated until after the cam 16 and the lever 37 have returned the carriage to its former position and the handle is again actuated.

The cam is provided with a knurled knob 86, whereby it may be turned.
When the cam 78 is turned to the osition shown by Figure 2, it moves the loc ing lever to its inoperative position. When the cam is turned to the osition shown by Figure 5, it permits the ocking lever to assume its operative position shown by Figure 1.
The carriage-reciprocating mechanism in which my invention is embodied may be installed in a machine not provided with means for automatically reciprocating the carriage and platen endwise, by substituting the extended rocker-arm 23 for the short rocker-arm with which the machine was originally provided, removing the supporting feet d from ther'ear portion of the base d, attaching the base plate 12 to the b ed by the bolts 13, connecting the link 2 with the rocker-arm, and securing the slotted fiange45 to the rod p by the clamps 44:.
To install the described attachment in an existing machine, it is necessary to first remove the shaft forming the fulcrum .9, remove the previously used rocker-arm and substitute therefor the extended rocker-arm 23, the said shaft being then replaced.
Removethe two rear existing feet corresponding to d, and place the extension base carrying the frame 14, and other mechanism, in place, and secure by means of bolts 13.- When the base plate 12 is put in place, the rack 22 and the link 26 are inserted into the machine, and the link 26 is attached to the lever 23 by means of the stud 28.
Slip the clamps 44 over the rod p, and secure in place by set screws.
Loosen the set screw of locking lever, release the bar and slip the bar over the side of the carriage, and find the correct position. Mark the point of contact of the set screw with the carriage andfile cut a groove in the carriage to receive the end of the set screw. Place the bar again in position, and set up a screw-securing bar in position.

vAn adding-machine comprising, in combination, a rotary platen; a movable carriage therefor; manually operated mechanism for rotating the platen step-by-step; and carriage-reciprocating mechanism including a carriage cam, a lever oscillated by said cam, a lever-engaging member on the carriage, and connections between said cam and the platen-rotating mechanism whereby the cam is rotated step-by-step to reciprocate the carriage.
I 2. An addin -machine substantially as specified by claim 1, said lever being provided with means whereby it may be separated from said lever-engaging member to permit manual reciprocation of the carriage.
3. An adding-machine substantially as specified by claim 1. said lever being of variable length to permit variation of the amplitude of movement imparted to the carriage by the lever.
4. An. adding-machine substantially as specified by claim 1, the said platen-rotating mechanism including a rocker-arm having an extension, and the said connections being engaged with said extension.
5. An adding-machine substantially as specified by claim 1, the said platen-rotating 6 v mechanism including a rocker-arm having" an extension, and said connections including a ratchet coaxial with and fixedto said cam, a pinion coaxial with the cam and independently rotatable, a ratchet-engaging pawl movable by the pinion, a rack engaged with the pinion, and 'a link connected with the rack and with the rocker,
arm extension, to reciprocate the rack and rock the pinion.
6. An adding-machine substantially as specified by claim 1, the said platen-rotatingnected with the rack and with the rockerarm extension, to reciprocate the rack and rock the pinion, yielding means being pro-' vided for preventing rotation of the cam when the pawl is moving backward on the ratchet.

An addin -machine substantially as specified by cla1m 1, the said lever including an inner member having a fulcrum stud journaled in a fixed bearing and. a cam-engaging trundle-roll; and an outer member adapted to swing toward and from the inner member, and provided with a stud adapted to separably' engage the lever-engaging member on the carriage, the lever being provided with means for longitudinally adjusting, and for positively securing the outer'member to. vary the operative length of the lever. K

An adding-machine substantially as specified by claim 1, the said lever being composed of an inner member havinga fulcrum stud journaled in a fixed bearing, and a cam-engaging trundle-roll; an intermediate member longitudinally adjustable on the inner member to vary the length of the lever, means being provided for positivelv connecting said members; and an outer member hinged to the intermediate member and provided with a stud engaged with the lever-engaging member on the carriage.
10. An adding-machine substantially as specified by claim 1, the said lever being composed of an inner member having a with the lever-engaging member on the car- 'riage.
11. An. adding-machine substantially as specified by claim 1, the said lever-engaging memberbeing a slotted plate or fiange provided with clamping meanswhereby it is secured to a rod on the carriage.
, 12. An adding-machine comprising, in-
combination, arotary platen; a movable carriage therefor; manually operated mechanism for rotating the platen step by step; and carriage-reciprocating mechanism including a carriage cam, a lever oscillated by said cam, a lever-engaging member on the carriage, connections between said cam and the platen-rotating mechanism whereby the cam is rotated step-by-step to reciprocate the carriage, the said platen-rotatin mechanism-including a rod which is latera ly mov able to impart a step-by-step rotation to the platen, automatic intermittently operating mechanism for periodically holding said bar in an inoperative position and preventing the rotationof the platen.
13. An adding-machme comprising, in
combination, a rotary platen; a movable carriage therefor;'manually operated mechanism for rotating the platen step by step; carriage-reciprocating mechanism including a carriage cam, a lever oscillated by said cam, a lever-engaging member on the carriage, connections between said cam and the platen-rotating mechanism whereby the cam is. rotated step-by-step to reciprocate the carriage,.the said platen-rotating mechanism including a rod which is' laterally movable to impart a step-by-step rotation to the platen; and automatic mechanism for periodicallyholding said rod in .an' inoperative position, including a segmental cam rib on said cam, and a rock shaft journaled in a fixed bearing and having an arm in the path 'of-said rib, and an eccentricall mounted -member inthe path of said ro and movable by the rock-shaft and cam rib to confine the rod in an inoperative position.

An adding-machine comprising, in combination, a rotary platen; a movable carriage therefor; manually operated mechanism for rotating the platen step by step, said mechanism including a rocker-arm fulcrumed on the main frame of the machine and provided with an extension; a supplemental frame; means securing the latter to the main frame of the machine; and carriage reciprocating mechanism including a carriage cam journaled in hearings on the supplemental frame, a lever fulcrumed on the supplemental frame and oscillatable by said cam, a lever-engaging member having clamping means engaging a rod on the carriage, and connections between said cam and the rocker-arm extension whereby the cam is rotated step by step to reciprocate the carriage.

In an adding-machine which includes a rotary platen, a carriage therefor, and a platen-locking lever on the carriage; an attachment for manually moving the locking lever to, and holding it in, its inoperative position, comprising a bar having clamping means engaging portions of the carriage, and a manually movable cam journaled in said bar and bearing on the locking lever.
16. An adding machine comprising, in-
combination, a frame, a reciproeatory platen carriage supported by the frame, a rotary platen carried by the carriage, manually operated mechanism for rotating the platen step by step, a lever fulcrumed on the frame and having one arm engaging said cam and another arm engaging the platen carriage, and means controlled by the operating devices of the platen rotating mechanism for imparting step by step rotary movement in one direction to the cam to actuate the lever and move the carriage in opposite directions.

An adding machine comprising, in combination, a frame, a reciprocatory platen carried supported by the frame, a rotary platen carried by the carriage, manually operated mechanism for rotating the platen step by step, a lever fulcrumed on the frame and having one arm engaging said cam and another arm engaging the platen carriage, means controlled by the operating devices of the platen rotating mechanism for imparting step by step rotary movement in one direction to the cam to actuate the lever and move the carriage in opposite directions,
and means turning with the cam and adapted to render the platen rotating means inthe platen rotating means for intermittingly' rotating the platen to cause said lever to move the platen carriage in opposite directions.
