rfhis invention relates to the impaling pins of a rfolding cylinder. f
rlher principal objects of the invention are to provide a foldingcylinder with impaling Dins'which at the moment when the paper 1s vstarted on its forward side to move'in a direction contrary to the direction of rotation of thel cylinder, these pins will move a short distance withk it,v therebyv avoiding irregular 1o tearing of the paper and permitting of increasing the speed of the folding couple and to provide a construction' in which the lateral movement ofthe pins is performed with very simple mechanism and ythey are restored to J normal Condition automatically and instanf taneously.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.

Y It is desirable to withdraw the impaling pinsinto the folding cylinder of aV printing press in as short a time as possible while the paper is being introduced between the fold- Lvi ing rollers. The speed of the entire folding machine is seriously limited by the fact that these pins have to be operated byk a cam'and the highertheol speed `the steeper the cam. Then the ,cam is changed so as to per- 15 mit speeding up, it brings about a disadvantage which is detrimental to correct folding. #As the folded product ,hasv a greatv number of pages the slow withdrawal of the impaling pins will cause loss of control f2.1 `ef the outside pages before the inside pages are released by withdrawal of the pins therefrom. At the moment of folding the forward edge of the sheet is made to move in a direction opposite to the direction of rotation of the cylinder. If the pins are left in, just at this instant, large ygashes or rips are necessarily left in the forward edge of the paper unless the operator is willing to sacrifice'the control of the paper by withdrawing the pins very suddenly.
ln order to overcome this difficult and permit high speeds I give the pins ab motion. that is, a motion in the direction in which the forward edge of the sheet starts to travel when being tucked in the folding rolls. During this withdrawing action the pins 'move backwardly with the paper so'that they have time to be withdrawn without pulling through the yedge of the paper.
Referring now to the first four iiguresit will be seen that the folding cylinder 10 is provided with the usual folding blades 11, the means for operating them not bein shown, as any ordinary means can be use with this invention.
The usual shafts 12 are employed which are turned by a cam, not shown. They are provided with arms 13 which project into slots 14 in the impaling pins 15. These pins are mounted to slide in bars 16 which are in turn pivoted to swing on pivot studs 17 located at their rear ends. Each bar is provided with a spring 18 engaging in a notch therein and tending to push the bar back against a surface 19 with which the folding cylinder is provid-` ed, which is close to the cutting rubbers 20.
It willbe seen that, irrespective of the position ofthe bar 16 about its pivot, the arm 13 can operate the pin in thev usual way and that, in the normal position, as shown in Fig. 1, the impaling, pins project through adjacent to the cutting rubbers.
`Byv reference to Fig. 2, however, it will be seen that whenthe operation is substan` tially finished and the impaling pins have to hold the sheet at the moment when the folding blade 11 starts to fold the sheet and push it through the folding rolls 22, the sheet itself is strong enough to pull the irnpaling pins back against their springs 18,

This gives a dwell toY the impaling pins and permits them to be withdrawn from the paper without stripping the paper from the pins and causking slits clear through to the edge of the paper. Y et control of the paper is retained as long as is possible and up until theV paper is within the control of the folding rolls 22. rIhis permits the use of a slower cam and a higher'j speed ofthe press and improves the control vof the paper on the folding cylinder. As soon as the pins are withdrawn the springs force them back into the position shown in Fig. 1.` Y
It is not necessary to providea yielding means forf this purpose and I have shown in Fig. 5, anv arrangement by which an eXtra stationary Acam is employed operating a roll 26 which is on an armv 27 connected with the rod? 16 or withthestud 17'on which it is pivoted. This cam is so designed and timed 'that .when the folding bladeV lil' swings about it'will be justfreafdy to `draw back the impa'ling pins 15; Infthe posit-ion shown in Fig. 5 this is just aboutto take Vplace as will be"obvious."v This provides afpositive control-of Lthe pinY and otherwise secures theV ysame results asabovev specified.

15. In combination vvith a folding cylin- 'der and its folding blade, of a rook shaft and sheet Carrying pins mounted upon the said shaft to rook to and fro in the plane of rotation of the said cylinder and positive means for controlling the rearwardly rocking 1notion of the said pins.
16. In combination with a folding cylinder and its folding blade, of a rock shaft carrying pins adapted to rook to and fro in the direction of travel of the said sheet, and means for rockingthe said shaft to and fro.
17. In combinationwith a folding cylinder and its folding blade, of a rock shaft upon Which are mounted sheet carrying pins and resilient means permitting the sheet as it is folded' olf to draw the pins in a rearwardly direction and positively operating means for returning the pins to their original position after they have been released from the sheet.
