An object of the invention is to provide an at tachment of the character described specially designed for application to cartons, or boxes, such as are commonly used to contain breakfast foods and which is adapted to be clamped to a wall of the container and whichis shaped to define a section ofv the wall to beremoved to providean outlet opening and a shutter or closure normally closing said opening but which may be readilylopened when it is desired to discharge the contents of thecontainer; I j

Another object of the invention is-to provide an attachment of the character described equipped with a supplemental'foraminated cover whereby the carton may be used as a shaker for serving salt and the like.

The attachment has been designed particularly for application to boxes or cartons containing food, but it is capable of generalapplicationto containers of this general nature.

With the above and other objects in view, the

- invention has particular relation to certain novel featuresof construction, operation and arrangement of parts, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral 1 designates a clamp plate, which is preferably formed of metal, and which has its central portion cut away forming the opening 2. The outer end of this clamp plate is downwardly turned forming the stop'3 adaptedto'abut the opposing wall of the carton or box 4,'when the attachment is applied thereto. Underneath the clamp plate 1 there are the clamp prongs 5, 5 which are preferably formed integrally with'the outer end of said clamp plate and whose inner ends are pointed as at 6, 6. The inner margins of these clamp prongs 5 are in substantial alignment with the corresponding sides of thecutaway portion 2.

Hinged to the inner margin of the clamp plate 1 there is a cover plate 7 which may be of the same general contour as the clamp plate. In application the attachment is applied to the box 4, ma manner-indicated-in Figure3, and the points of the prongs 5 are forced through the material of one wallof the box, and forced on inwardly until-the clamp plate 1 lies'on the adjacent wall of the box as indicatedin Figure 2, in which position the said last mentioned wall will be tion 3 has a stud or projection 9 which will be received by a socket 10 in the clip 8 whereby the cover will be held tightly closed.

In the form shown in Figures 5 to 8 inclusive the clamp plate 1 is similar to that shown in Figure 1 and is secured'to the carton or box 4 by .the prongs 5 in the manner hereinabove described.

In this form however there is a supplemental cover plate 11 preferably rectangular inform, which is located underneath the cover plate 12. This supplemental cover and the cover plate are mounted to pivot about the pivot 13 whereby said supplemental cover 11 and the cover plate are secured to the clamp plate 1. In this form the cover plate 12 may be swung around into one position as shown in Figure 6 so as to expose the perforations of the cover 11 when it is desired to use the container as a shaker. The cover plate 12 has the upstanding grip 14 at its free end whereby it may be swung about its pivot. When the cover plate 12 is swung around in the other direction it will engage the stop 15 carried by the cover 11 and may be stopped in said position to completely close the opening but if moved further in said direction as indicated in Figure 7, it will carry the cover 11 with it so as to completely open the opening 2.

In the form shown in Figures 9, 10 and 11 is a clamp plate 16, preferably circular in 'form and having the central opening 17 defining the portion of the container to be cut away. This clamp plate 16 has the inside prongs 18 whose free ends are sharp and correspondinglydirected and provided to be inserted through the material of the container and the'clamp plate is turned until said prongs are forced through the material of the container wall, said prongs-serving to secure the plate 16 inplace. In this. form there is a circular cover plate 19, pivoted to the clamp plate 16 at one side whereby the :cover plate 19 may beswung either into openor into closed position. This cover plate 19 has the :upstanding grip 20.by means of which it may be manipulated. The cover plate 19 also has the depending marginal stops 21 which engage the clamp plate 16 when the coverplate is swung to closed position so that it will be stopped in said last mentioned position. The cover plates -7, 12 and 19 may be readily opened when it is desired to remove a portion of the contents of the box or container and atother times may be maintained securely closed to excludemoisture and foreign matter and to keepthe contents of the box or container fresh. i

The drawings and description disclose-what are now considered to bepreferred forms of the invention by way of illustration only, while the broad principle of the invention will be defined by the appended claims.

What I claim is: v

1. A device of the character described com prising a clamp plate having a cutawayportion, clamp prongs carried thereby one on each side of said cutaway'portion, and aclosure hinged-to and adapted to fit closely against said clamp plate and adapted to cover said cut away portion when in closed position.

2. A device of the character described comprising a clamp plate having a discharge opening therethrough, clamp prongs on opposite sides of the opening and secured to said plate and lying adjacent thereto and approximately parallel therewith and-having free ends, anda cover plate hinged to the clamp plateand adapted to close said opening when in closed position.

3. A device of the character described comprising a clamp plate having a cutaway portion, clamp prongs carried thereby, and a closure hinged'to saidclamp plate and adapted to cover said cut away portion when in closed position, there and a spring on said closure and engageable with the 'outerendof said plate for maintaining said cover-plate in closed position.

4. A device of the character described comprising a clamp plate ;having anopening, a plurality of prongs attached at one end to said plate and lying approximately parallel therewithand having their'other endsfree and pointed and a cover-plate hingedto the clamp plate and movable into one position to open said opening and into. another-position to I close said opening, and releasable-means for maintaining said coverplate closed. 7 r V I 5. In combination a container, a clamp plate fitted against an outerside thereof, and having a cutaway portion defining and opening, means for releasably securing said clamp plate in position, a cover plate hinged to be moved out of and into close fitting relation with said plate so as .toopen and close saidopening. 3
