Richter,` Charles4 W. Richterand Jacob F. Richter e v Application Januari/30, 1932. serial No. 589,874' 17 Claims: (ciao-'73) An object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive fireplace which is strong and durable in eonstructionand which is 4attractive in appearance. f
Another object of the invention is to provide a fireplace for use with an electrical .device representing burning logs, or with a similar device, the iireplace being pressed out .of metal and having the appearance of aiireplace manufactured of*l brick,` stone, or-other similar/material.
The invention comprehends a nreplace which has a front which may be pressed and be painted as desired to represent brick, stone, or other similar material, the front having an inwardly disposed portion to .iorm Kthe. sides and back of a replace opening,y a member being securedv to the rear of the front and to the top of the sides and the back oi the inwardly disposed portion forming the iireplace opening to form the top of the iireplace opening, the member being continued beyond the sides of the fireplace opening and being secured to therearwardly extending portions at the sides of the front of the nreplace, the said member serving to brace the sides and the back of the inwardly disposed portion forming the replace opening.
The invention also comprehendsl a fireplace having a mantel withva recess extending at its front and, sides and which is disposed at the top and the rearwardly extending sides of the replace, the fireplace, the mantel anda chimney extending upwardly from the mantel being braced and being` secured in a. manner to obtain great strength and durability, whiley making itA 'Ipossibleto manufacture the fireplace together with the mantel and chimney at little cost. In
' the preferred form of the construction, a base is provided to which the front of the ireplace is secured, as well as the inwardly ydisposed portion and the sides of the front of the fireplace;
Additional objects'of the invention will appear in the following specification in ywhich the preferred form of the invention is described.
4vFigure 5 isa sectional view on the line 5 5 Iny the drawings similar reference characters refer to similar parts in all the views, of whichr of Figure 3, but on the scale shownvin Figures l1 and 2, and,r
yFigure 6 is a sectional ,View on the line 6 6 of Figure 3, but on the scale shown in Figures 1 and2. .i 60,
-By referring to the drawings it'will be seen that afiireplace is provided which is'pressedout of sheet'metal and is reinforced for strength and durability, thereplace being providedy for use -in connection with electricaldevices which, when v lit, represent burning logs.` The replace has a front member 10 having Aits sides 11 bent rearwardly and with the'rearf edges I12 of its side bent substantially parallel with its iront member 10. The rearof the sides 11, at their bottom, are cut away at 12 to accommodate a moulding at the bottom of the wall against rwhich the fireplace is to be disposed. kThe front member 10 has a replace opening13, an inwardly disposed portionor portions yforming the sides 14 and the back 15 of 75 thel replace opening. l It will be understood that the sides and back of the fireplace opening, withv which the front member 10 is provided may be manufactured of `separate pieces of vsheet metal which may be welded or soldered together to V form the sides and the back of the fireplace opening as illustrated in` the drawings. lThe front member 10, together with the sides 14 and thev back 15 of the lfireplace opening, and also withy the sides 11y of thefront member 10, lare secured 85 tothetop of a base '16 by weldingsoldering, or
other means, the base 16 having ya periphery flange or flanges .17 which serve as 'a support andthe base 16 also being provided withreinforeing and supportingmembers 18 and 19. f
y Disposed at the rear ofthe iront member 10 and secured theretoatA 20 by welding, soldering or other means, there is a horizontal lmember 21 which has its ends -22 secured to the sides 11 of the front member 10 and its middle portion se- 95 cured to theupper portions of thev sides 1,4 and the back 15 ofthe fireplace opening 13.v As willl best beseen by referring to Figures 2 and 3, the
horizontal member 21 is provided with a rearwardly depending iiange 21', a portion of` which 100 is out and is disposed at the inner side by the back member 15 to whichit is secured. It will be. understood that, with this construction, the replace opening 13 is complete, forits bottom is f at the base 16, its sides at the sides 14', its back 105 at the back 15 of the fireplace' and itsv topv is formed by the horizontal member 21. It will also be understood that, with this construction, the sides 14 of the nreplace opening are reinforced and are held relatively. to the sides 11 `which ex- 110 l at the front of the mantel.
tend rearwardiy from the front member 10. As an additional means of holding the members of the lfireplace opening rigid, a brace 23 is provided having fianges 24 which are secured to 'the rear of the back 15 by welding, soldering, or other ineanathe brace 23 having its ends secured to the sides 1l and to the flanges 12 by welding, soldering, or other means. I
Disposed above the horizontal portion 21 there is a hollow, bent reinforcing member 25 which has fianges 26 which are secured to the rear of the front member 10 by welding, soldering, or other means. Above this reinforcing member 25' and at the corners of the fireplace, there are triangular reinforcing members 27 which have their s".des secured to the front memberl() and to its sides il by welding, soldering, or other means. Above the said triangular reinforcing members 27 there is disposed at the rear of the front member a horizontally extending reinforcing member23 which is angular in cross section and which has flanges 29 secured to the rear of the front member 10 by welding, soldering, or other means.
A metal mantel 30 is provided for the fireplace, this metal'mantel having a horizontal shelf portion 31 and the mantel at the front of the horizontal shelf portion 31 extending downwardly and inwardly at 32 and having a portion 33 disposed at the outer surface of the front member 10, forming one side of a recess, the recess'being formed by the metal of which the mantel 30 is constructed which extends inwardly and downwardly at l34. In this recess, which is shown at the front of the mantel in Figure 3 of the drawings and at the sides of the mantel in Figure 2, is disposed the top of the front member 10 and the top ofthe sides 11, the recesses at the sides of the mantel being a continuation of the recess extends downwardly and is secured to the front of the mantel at the inner side of its recess 34k as a means of supporting the mantel and also as a means of holding the mantel at itsrecess 34 in position. There are also reinforcements 'for f the mantel 30 at its sides which consist of angularly disposed metal pieces 37 which are secured to the'sides of the mantel at the inner sides of its recesses at 34 and to the front of the mantel, said angularly disposed metal pieces -37 having fianges 38 which are secured to the underside of the mantel shelf 31 by welding, soldering, or other means. With this construction, not only is a rigid fireplace provided which is secured to the base l5 and to which the mantel 3G is secured, but this rigid, inexpensive metal fireplace is constructed and reinforced to make a permanent fireplace which may be installed in houses in the course of erection, or inserted inthe wall of` a room during reconstruction or remodeling.
It will be understood that 4the front member 1o, together with its sides 11, may be pressed as desired to represent bricks or stone, and may be painted to vgive the desired effect land color.
Preferably the mantel is provided with a chimney member 39 which hasa front member 40 and sides 4l, the chimney member 39 .being manufactured of sheet metal and having its sides 41 cut so that their front edges will converge with the rear of the chimney upwardly. Braces 42 aredsposed at the rear of the front mem? The mantel at its Secured to the underside of the` ber and are secured to the front member and to its sides 4l by welding, soldering or other means. rlhe chimney member 39 has angularly disposed reinforcing members 43 which are secured to the front member 40 andto the sides 4l, as best shown in Figure 4 of the drawings.
it will be understood that, preferably these angularly disposed reinforcing members 43, together with the base of the front member 40 and its sides 4l, are secured to the shelf member 30 by welding, soldering or other means.
