19 Claims.
This invention relates to embossing and printing machines; and has special reference to machines designed and adapted for use in applying gold lettering and other ornamentations to articles made of leather or other materials.
The machine is well designed and adapted for use in applying gold lettering andother ornamentations to leather articles, such as billfolds, cigarette cases, key cases and other devices. The machine includes a baseor platen for supporting the work or articles to be imprinted or ornamented and a standard for supporting the printing or ornamenting mechanism and the devices for operating the same.
An object of the invention is to provide a machine of the character and for the purpose mentioned having an invertible type-supporting frame or type carrier mounted and supported in a novel manner and by means whereby said frame or carrier may be swung from its operative position to an inverted or partially inverted position to facilitate the placement and removalof type.
Other objects will appear from the following description, reference being made to the annexed drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a front elevation of my improved ma-' Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view of the type carrier or holder.

The machine comprises a base 1 supporting a platen 2 and an upwardly and forwardly extending standard 3. The platen'2 is arranged 45,. and designed to support the work to be =imprint. ed or ornamented and is in cooperative relation with a gage/i attached to the front end of. a rod.
A split bearing or guide is in connection with the front end of the standard 3, the same comprising a part7 formed integral with the Standard 3 and a part 8 detachably held in connection with the part7 by removable and replaceable fasteners 9. These parts 7 and 8 form a tubular guide having'at its lower portion a bearing 10 and, at its. upper portion, a -bearing 11 in axial alinement 60. withthe bearing 10. A shoulder 12 is formed at the upper portion of the bearing 10, and asimilar shoulder 13 is formed at the lower portion of the bearing 11.
A plunger 14 is mounted for vertical slidin movements in these bearings 10 and 11. A coil spring 15 encircles the plunger 14 within the tubular guide, the lower end of said'spring seat-- ing upon the shoulder 12 and the upper end of said spring engaging an abutment'16rigid with the plunger 14. Thus the spring 15 is utilized as an actuator to return the plunger 14 to the uppermost position after each operation of the plunger, and tosupport said plunger yieldingly in said position. The plunger 14 is formed with a vertical groove 1'7 in its upper portion receiving a. flange 18 formed as a part of the bearing 11 and functioning to prevent the plunger 14 from turning in either direction and to guide'said plunger in its sliding movements. A lever 19 is mounted on a pivot 20 supported by the standard 3, and operates against a roller-21 mounted on an axle member 22 near the upper end of, the plunger 14". This lever 19 extends upwardly and forwardly across the roller 21"and is manually operative'to push the plunger 14 downwardly in opposition to the spring 15. I
The lower end of the plunger 14 is formed with anintegral head 23 having forwardly extended arms 24 in rigid connection therewith. These arms'24 areparallel with each other and are formed with parallel slots 25, and with notches 26 in their lower edges and matching notches 27 in their upper edges; The front ends 28 of these T arms 24 are arcuate, being formed concentrically with the frontends of the slots 25.
A reinforcing bar or member'29 is rigid with the front of the head 23 and is formed with a number of holes 30. The type carrier or holder comprises a frame 31' having cars 32 extending at the sides of the arms 24. Pins 33in connection with the ears 32extend intothe slots 25 for sliding and pivotal movements. Thus, by proper manipulation of the frame 31, said frame may be moved fromthe position shown in'Fig. 5 to thedotted line position shown in Fig; 6. This movement of the: frame 31 to the dottedline position shown in Fig. 6 is effected by sliding said frame 3l forwardly, the pins 33moving forwardly along y the slots25 to the front ends of said slots and 751 .type supporting frame extending into said slots.
then swinging the frame 31 upwardly and rearwardly to approximately inverted position. Pins 34 are rigid with the frame 31 and are arranged to engage in the holes when the frame 31 is in its downwardly extended and rearward position. Thus, these pins 34 cooperate with the hinge pins 33 to hold the frame 31 in a rigid location and adjustment when said frame is to be operated for imprinting or ornamenting purposes. A pair of resilient spring detents 35 are attached to the frame 31 and are arranged to engage in the notches 26 and 27 to hold the frame 31 from forward sliding movements. Thus, when the spring detents 35 are engaged in the notches 26, the frame 31 will be held in its downwardly ex tended adjustment and rearward location inposition for operation. When the frame 31 is moved forwardly and swung upwardly to the dotted line position shown in Fig. 6, the spring detents 35 engage in the notches 27 and thus hold the frame 31in its upwardly extended position. v s A pair of clamping, members 36 extend int the frame 31 and are screwed onto right and left hand threads, respectively, formed on a rod 37 extending longitudinally through said frame. The rod 37 is held from endwise movements by washers 38 engaged by the ends of handles 39 attached to the ends of the rod 37 and constituting manual means for rotating said rod and for.

. In use, a line of type is placed between the c1ainps36, and said clamps are moved into clamping engagement with the ends of the line of type. This is done while the frame 31 is in its upwardly extended position, thus facilitating and expedit-.

After the type have been properly placed in the frame and the clamps 36 have been adjusted to clamp the type therein, the frame 31 is moved forwardly and is swung downwardly and moved. rearwardly to engage the pins 34 in the holes 30 and the detents' 35 in the notches 26. Then the. work is placed upon the support 2 in proper position. The work may be gaged by; the gage 4 or other appropriate gaging devices after which the lever 19 is operated to push the plunger 14' downwardly and cause the type mounted in. the type carrier or holder to imprint their outlines upon the work mounted in the support 2. After-the imprinting work.
It is now clear that my improved machine comprises a type carrier or holder easily movable from .one position to another. In one of the positions to which the type carrier or holder is movable, thetype may be easily placed'inor removed therefrom and, in the other positionof said type carrier or holder, the machine is ready foruse.
The construction and arrangement of these parts may be varied, and modified within the scope of'equivalent limits without'departure from the" nature and principle of the invention.- I do not restrict myself unessentially, but what I: claim and desire to secure by LettersrPatent is:"
1. In a machineof the character described, a
movable plunger, arms rigid with thelower end ofsaid plunger having elongated slots, a type supporting frame, pivots in connection with said and being movable along said slots toward the outer ends of said arms, mechanism for supporting type in connection with said frame, and means for supporting said frame in rigid position in which said frame extends downwardly from said arms or in a position in which said frame extends upwardly from said arms.
2. A machine of the character described comprising a longitudinally movable plunger, rigid arms projecting laterally from one end of said plunger and having elongated slots therein, pivots extending into said slots for sliding movements along and turning movements in said slots, a type carrying frame supported by said pivots and being swingable from downwardly extended position to upwardly extended position when said pivots are moved laterally along said slots and turned, and means for holding said frame rigidly in downwardly extended position and yieldingly in upwardly extended position.
3. A machine of the character described comprising a longitudinally movable plunger, rigid arms in connection with said plunger, a type carrying frame pivotally supported in connection with said arms for lateral sliding movements and for turning, movements from downwardly extended position below said arms to upwardly extended position above said arms, latching means for holding said frame; yieldingly in'either said downwardly extended or upwardly extended position, and means cooperating with said latching means to hold said frame rigidly in downwardly extended position.
4. A machine of the character described comprising a longitudinally movable plunger, a type carrying frame, means pivotally supporting said type carrying frame in connection with one end of said plnger for both lateral sliding movements and upwardly and downwardly swinging movemerits, and latch devices yieldingly holding said frame in downwardly extended position beyond the lower end of said plunger or in upwardly extended position at the front of said plunger.
5. A machine of the character described comprising a longitudinally movable plunger, a support rigid with the'lower end of said plunger, a type carrying frame, means pivotally supporting said type carrying frame in connection with said support for lateral sliding and pivotal movements, and latching means for holding said type carrying frame extended downwardly below said support or upwardly above said support.
6. A machine of the character described comprising a longitudinally movable plunger, a support rigid with the lower end of said plunger, a type carrying'fra'me, means pivotally supporting said type carrying frame in connection with said support for lateral sliding and pivotal movements, latching means for holding said type carrying frame extended downwardly below said support or upwardly above said support, and means cooperating with said latching means for holding said frame rigidly in its downwardly extended position.

In a machine of the character described, a longitudinally movable plunger, a bar rigid with the lower end of said plunger having holes therein, arms rigid wi h and projecting beyond said bar and having elongated slots, a type carrying frame having pivots extending into said slots for supporting said frame for lateral sliding and for turning movements, andpins rigid with said frame extending into said holes in said bar and being withdrawable therefrom when said frame is moved laterally.
10. In a machine of the character described, a longitudinally movable plunger, a bar rigid with T the lower end of said plunger having holes therein,
arms rigid with and projecting laterally beyond said bar, a type carrying frame, pivot pins in connection with said frame and said arms supporting said frame for lateral sliding and for upwardly and downwardly swinging movements, latch devices holding said frame adjacent to said bar in downwardly extended position, and pins engaged in said holes in said bar and engaging said frame and cooperating with said latch devices and said arms to hold said frame rigidly in downwardly extended position.

arms rigid with and projecting laterally beyond said bar, a type carrying frame, pivot pins in connection with said frame and saidarms supportin said frame for lateral sliding and for upwardly and downwardly swinging movements, latch devices holding said frame adjacent to said bar in downwardly extended position, pins engaged in said holes in said bar and engaging said frame and cooperating with said latch devices and said arms to hold said frame rigidly in downwardly extended position, and mechanism supported by said frame for clamping type in connection with said frame.
12. A machine of the character described comprising a longitudinally movable plunger, a bar rigid with one end of said plunger, arms rigid with and projecting laterally beyond said plunger, a type carrying frame, mechanism for clamping type in said frame, pivot means for supporting said frame in connection with said arms for lateral movement toward and away from said bar and for swinging movements from downwardly extended position below said arms to upwardly extended position above said arms, latch devices for supporting said frame in upwardly extended position above said arms, and pins engaging said frame and said bar and cooperating with said arms and said pivots to hold said framerigidly in downwardly extended position below said arms.
In a machine of the character described, a longitudinally movable plunger, a type carrier, means for securing type on said type carrier, a wall on aid type carrier for alining the type thereon, a rigid arm projecting forwardly from lower end of said plunger, and means for pivctally supporting said type carrier in connection with said arm for swinging movements from position in which said type carrier extends downwardly below said arm to support the type with their faces extended'downwardly to-position in which said type-carrier extends upwardly above said arm to extend the faces of the type upwardly and in which said wall is at the rear of the type;
14. A machine of the character described comprising a longitudinally movable plunger, a rigid arm projecting forwardly from the lower end of said plunger, a typecarrier, means pivotally supporting said type carrier in connection with said arm for swinging movements from downwardly extended position to upwardly extended positon above said arm, and a longitudinal wall in connection with said type carrier extending along the front of the type when the type carrier is extended downwardly and along the rear of the type when the type carrier is extended upwardly above said arm.

A machine of the character described comprising a longitudinally movable plunger, a rigid arm projecting forwardly from the lower end of said plunger, a type carrier, means pivotally supporting said type carrier in connection with I said arm for swinging movements from downwardly extended position to upwardly extended position above said arm, a longitudinal wall in supporting said type carrier in connection with.
said arm for swinging movements from downwardly extended position to upwardly extended position above said arm, a longitudinal wall in connection with said 'type carrier extending along the front of the type when the type car rier is extended downwardly and along the rear of the type when the type carrier is extended upwardly above said arm, releasable devices for holding said type carrier in its upwardly extended position above said arm, and means for holding said type carrier rigidly in downwardly extended position.

A machine of the character described comprising a lon itudinally movable plunger, a rigid arm projecting forwardly from the lower "end of said plunger, a type carrier, a longitudinal wall in connection with said type carrier, mechafor clamping type in connection with said type carrier at one side of said wall, means for supporting said type carrier ri idly in downward- 1y extended position in which said wall extends along the front of said type, and means for holding said. type carrier in upwardly extended position above said arm in which said wall extends along the rear of the type carrier.

A machine of the cha .cter described comprising a longitudially movable plunger, a rigid arm projecting forwardly from the lower end of said plunger, a type carrier, devices for clamping type in connection with said type carrier, a wall for alining the type on said type carrier, pivot means for supporting saidtype carrier in connection with said arm for movement from position to extend the faces of the type downward- 1y to position in which the faces of the type nection with said arm for movement from position to extend the faces of the type downwardly to position in which the faces of the type are extended upwardly above said arm, releasable means supported by said type carrier for holding said type carrier in each of said positions, and means other than said releasable means for holding said type carrier rigidly in that position in which the faces of the type are extended downwardly.
