Application December 14, 1932 Serial No. 647,105
Claims.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved stopper for the drain O a laundry tub; to provide improved means for securing the stopper to the tub so as to discourage theft of the stopper; and to provide an improved stopper of this kind which can be readily attached to laundry tubs of standard form.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
v l Fig. 1 is a transverse section of a laundry tub to which an improved stopper is applied.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary section of a portion of the tub and showing one of the stoppers.
in the construction herein shown, the invention is applied to a laundry tub formed of concrete or any other suitable material and having the usual bottom 1, rear wall 2, front wall 3, end walls not shown, and an intermediate partition wall 5 arranged to form a pair of receptacles. It is obvious that the invention may be applied to a tub having any number of receptacles. Extending rearwardly from the upper edge of the rear wall 2, is a horizontal shelf 8.
Embedded in the bottom wall of the tub directly below the partition 5, is a drain member l5 having a pair of openings communicating respectively with the two receptacles. In each opening .1.6 is seated a strainer 17, having a rim 18 which lies flush with the top surface of the bottom wall 1. The drain has side walls 19 which converge toward an outlet not shown which is common to both of the openings 16.
Controlling each opening 16` of the drain, is a stopper 22 which includes a plug 23 located in a perforated housing 24 which is seated in an annular groove 25 formed in the rim of the strainer 1'?. lThe plug 23 is secured to the lower end of a vertically movable plunger 26 which extends through a guide tube or sleeve 2'?, and which is providedwith a handle 28 on its upper end, The lower end of the guide tube is threaded in a cap 29 mounted on the housing 24 and its upper end is clamped to a bracket 30.
in the form shown, the bracket 30 comprises horizontal shelf part 31, adapted to rest upon the upper edge of the partition wall 5, and a pair of depending flanges 32 and spaced apart to receive'the partition wall. The inner side of the flange 32 is faced with leather, fabric, or other suitable material 34 and the iiange 33 supports a bearing plate 35 having pins 36 engaging apertures 37 in the flange 33. Threaded in the flange 33 is a set screw 38 adapted to force the bearing plate 35 into rm contact with the par- (c1. 11F-208)v tition wall 5. Formed in the shelf part 31 of the bracket, are openings 39 for receiving the upper ends of the tubes 27.
Threaded on the upper end of each tube 27 is a pair of nuts 40 and 4l, which bear against the upper and lower sides, respectively, of the bracket. 'By tightening the nut 41, the tube 27 is urged downwardly for pressing the perforated housing 24 into rm contact with the rim of the strainer 17.
Mounted on each plunger 26, is a pin 42 which engages a bayonet slot 43 so that, when the plug is seated on the strainer 17, the plunger may be locked by giving the plunger a partialturn.
In operation, to close the drain of either receptacle, its plug is dropped onto its strainer 17. Inasmuch as the plungers are guided in the tubes, the plugs will always seat properly. To drain either receptacle, the plunger is raised until the pin 42 is above the tube. The plunger is then turned so as to permit the pin to rest on the upper edge of the tube, thereby holding the plug in open position.
lIt will. be understood that details of the construction shown may be altered without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the following claims.
I claim:
l. In a device of the class described, a receptacle having a drain opening, a rim surrounding said opening, a housing surmounting said opening, a sleeve on the upper end of said housing, co-acting means on said sleeve and receptacle for urging said sleeve downwardly to press said housing into firm contact with the bottom of said receptacle, a vertically movable plunger extending through said sleeve, and a plug located in said housing and mounted on the lower end of said plunger so as to be adapted to seat on said rim.
2. In a device of the class described,a receptacle having a drain opening, a rim surrounding said opening, a perforated housing detachably seated on saidvrim, a plug located in said housing and adapted to close said opening, a vertically movable plunger secured to said plug and projecting upwardly through said housing, and releasable means co-acting with said receptacle for clamping said 'housing to said rim.
3. In a device of the class described, a receptacle having a bottom provided with a drain opening, a perforated housing surmounting said opening and supported on said bottom, a shelf on said receptacle, a tube mounted on said housing, means on said tube engaging said shelf for clamping said housing to said bottom, a plug in said housing adapted to close said drain opening, and means4 extending through said tube for raising said plug to open said drain.
4. In a device of the class described, a receptacle having a bottom provided with a drain opening, a perforated housing surmounting said opening and supported on said bottom, a shelf on said receptacle, a tube mounted on said housing, a nut on said tube engaging said shelf for clamping said housing to said bottom, a plug in said housing adapted to close said drain opening, and means extending through said tube for raising said plug to open said drain.
, said plunger above said shelf.
