Description

C. R. DUNCAN AUTOMOBILE ACCESSORY Filed Dec. 9, 1926 gwumtoc Patented Dec. 4, 1928.
UNITED STATES CHARLES R. DUNCAN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
AUTOMOBILE ACCESSORY.
Application filed December 9, 1926. Serial No. 153,598.
It is the primar object of my invention to provide a simp e and economical holder which may be easily and quickly attached or detached to or from an automobile, which holder maybe used for a plurality of purposes but which is primarily adapted be used for carrying umbrellas in automobiles. Another object is to provide such a devlce which shall be of neat appearance, will occupy but little space, and which will not interfere with the cleaning of the automobile.
With the above and other objects in view, my inventionv consists in the arrangement, combination and construction of the various parts of my improved device as described in the specification, claimed in my claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in
which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of'a portion of an automobile, showing my improved device secured therein.
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of my improved device illustrating the means forsecuring it to the automobile.
Fig. 3 is a fragmental view showing in rear elevation, thetop portion of my improved device.
I have showna portion of a conventional automobile having a conventional floor 5 for the back compartment, and a conventional front seat 6. Secured to the floor 5 by a screw 7 is a cuplike fitting 9 having a central recess 10. The bottom of the fitting 9 may be provided with an aperture 11 communicating with an aperture 12 in the floor 5.
A tube 13 whose bottom is closed except for the apertures 14, rests in the recess 10 and extends upwardly in a line substantially parallel with the back of the seat 6. The tube 13 is provided with a flared end piece 8 which may be secured on the end. of the tube in any suitable manner. A member 15 is secured to the flared fitting 8 as at 16 and is provided with inwardly tapered sides on its opposite end which engage in a tapered slot in the fitting 17 which is secured to the back of the seat 6 b a. plurality of screws 18. Thus, the connection between thetapered portion of the piece 15 and the tapered groove in the piece 17 becomes a dovetail connection which holds the tube 13 against accidental displacement, but which permits removal of the tube by simply lifting it vertically.- An umbrella '19 .may be inserted in the tube 13 with the bottom thereof resting on the bottom of the tube and the handle head 20 thereof resting in the flared member 8. The head 20 and flaredmember 8 may be made to conform in size and contour so as to furnish a finished appearance when the umbrella is inposition.
Likewise, the tube 13 may be finished in any 7 suitable color to conform the automobile.
It will be apparent that my improved device completely houses the umbrella so as to prevent the ruining of upholstery" or the clothes of the occupants of the car, when it is wet. Water draining from the umbrella may escape through the openings 14in the tube 13, and from there may escape from the openings 11 and 12 to a point outside of the automobile. It will be understood that I herein use the word tubular in the sense of a hollow struc ture and do not intend to limit the tube 13 to circular or cylindrical form, as it may well be of square, hexagon or other form without departing from thespirit of my invention.
It Will be obvious that various changes may be made inthe arrangement, combination and construction of the various parts of my improved device without departing from the spirit of my invention, and it is my intention to cover by my claim such changes as may be reasonably included Within the scope thereof.
VVhat I claim is:
In combination with an umbrella provided 7 with a permanent staff and handle, a supporting case for said umbrella comprising a tubular member adapted to be supported in a genwith the finish of erally vertical position, said member being provided with an open outwardly iiared; upper end, and the upper end of said handle being formed complementary to said flared end whereby to close the same and support said umbrella therefrom when said umbrella is positioned within said member.
