' 4 claims.V (ci. '2m-'71) This invention relates to a device which is useful as a. guard for window, door and other openings or passageways to prevent persons from unlawfully entering therethrough.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a device adapted to be arranged in relation to an opening or passageway and which includes a means adapted to b'e placed across the opening or passageway to constitute a guard, and which may be removed and be put away clear of the opening or passageway out of sight at will.
The nature of the invention and its distinguishing features and advantages willv appear when the following specification is read in con- Y nection with the accompanying drawings, in
which Figure 1 is 4a view looking at theinside of a window, and showing a device constructed in 20v accordance with the invention applied thereto,
Referring now more particularly to the draw--v ings, it will be apparent thatv there has been shown, by way of an example, a window consisting of a frame structure 10 deflning` an opening 11 and sashes 12 being arranged for up and down movement in the structure 10 in the usual manner and for the usual purpose. In accordance with the invention there is provided a casing or housing 13 on the frame structure 10 adjacent the opening 11 at opposite sides thereof. Each casing or housing 13 includes a hinged closure section or cover 14 having a .flange 15. Use s 45; made of a plurality of bars 16 to constitute a guarding means to be placed across the window opening 11 and to be removed from their positions across the window opening. A plurality of the bars 16 is arranged in each of the casings 13,
159i there being three bars 16 in each of the casings in the present instance. Each of the bars 16 is of a length to extend entirely across the window opening 11 and also to project beyond the opposite sides of the opening. Means is provided for removably supporting the bars transversely or 'this form of device Will be similar to that shown across the opening: 11, and in the present instance the said means consists ofstudsor pins 17 secured within the casing 13 in spaced relation. In the present instance one end of each of the bars 16 in each of the casingsr13 is connected 50 with one of the pins 17 for pivotal movement, and
`the opposite end of each bar has a hole 18 to receive one of the pins 17 in the adjacent casing 13. 'Ihe bars 16 in theleft-hand casing'13 are pivotally connected at their upper ends, whereas 65' across the window opening 11, will be disposed 705 i the casings 13 to constitute guarding means as 75 shown in Figure 2. It will also be apparent that the bars may be ,swung from their guarding positions across the window opening in the casings 13 clear of the window opening to be enclosed within the casings 13. '80
. In accordance with another feature of the invention, the hinged section or cover 14 of each casing 13 constitutes means to secure the bars 16 on the studs or pins 17 when the bars 16 are placed across the window opening 11. The said cover 14 of each casing has six notches 19in the ilange 15 thereof to accommodate thev bars 16.
Each hinged section or cover 14 is locked in a closed position in engagement with the bars 16 when the latter are in their guarding positions 905 by any suitable locking means designated 20.
From the foregoing it will'be apparent that the bars 16 may be placed across the window opening 11 to constitute means to prevent unlawful entry through the opening 11; that the bars may be locked or secured in the guarding position; and that said bars may be removed or be swung `clear of the window opening 11 and be put away into the casings or housings 13.
If desired each of the bars 16 may be suspended 100 within its casing 13 on a stud, pin or hook 21 when -notemployed across the window opening 11, as shown in Figure 5. Studs or pins 22 are arranged within the casingor housing 13 and each bar 16, which is provided with holes respectively at the opposite ends, may be supported on a pair of the pins 22 which are received in the holes in the ends of the bars. In other respects` in Figures 1 to 4 inclusive. no
What is claimed is: 1. The combination With a structure having Yan opening therethrough, of bars, means including casings on said structure adjacent opposite sides of the opening to removably support the bars across said opening in guarding positions,
and means to hold the bars on said iirst meansv an opening therethrough, of bars, and means on` .the inside of said structure adjacent opposite sidesof saidopening adapted to hold said bars disposed across said opening to constitute guard means obstructing the opening, and said means enabling the removal of the bars from obstructing positions across the opening, said means including provision for enclosing said bars when not in use.
4. The combination with a structure having an opening therethrough, of bars, and means on the inside of said structurevadjacent opposite sides of said opening adapted to support said bars disposed across said opening to constitute guard means obstructing the opening, said means enabling the removal of the bars from obstructing positions across the opening, said means including provision for enclosing said bars when not in use, and hinged members on said structure engageable With the opposite ends of the bars to lock them on said rlrst means disposed across said opening.
