Description

June 11, 1946. w. D. ROSSITER SEALING MEANS FOR DOORS Filed Nov. 21, 1944 TEE WZ'LLIAM EJ217551 Patented June 11, 1946 William D. Rossiter, Toledo, Ohio Application November 21, 1944, Serial No. 564,493
2 Claims.
This invention relates to means for preventing the doors of cabinets from being opened without detection. It is particularly desirable for use in connection with cabinets of the type used in buildings to house fire extinguishers in a manner to prevent saboteurs and others from having access thereto, without detection, to remove the chemicals contained therein or to substitute an inflammable liquid for the fire extinguishing chemicals.
The object of this invention is the provision of a, simple, efiicient and novel form of sealing the like, which is operable in connection with a swinging door-locking control to secure such control in locked position, and includes a fragile part that is breakable by an unlocking movement of the control to indicate that the door has been opened.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and three embodiments thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cabinet equipped with one form of locking device for the door and having the sealing feature of the present invention associated therewith; Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal cross-section taken on the line 22 in Fig. 1, with parts broken away; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail of a door locking means with the fragile sealing part associated therewith; and Fig. 4 is an enlarged front elevation of the In the drawing, the fastening means for the door I, shown in the present instance in connection with a cabinet 2, includes a control handle or member 3 pivoted to the door adjacent to the free edge thereof for swinging control movements in a plane parallel to the door face. This handle is carried at the outer side of the door by a shaft 4 projecting through the door and provided at its inner end with a cross-arm 5 having upper and lower locking rods or bolt members 6 projecting in opposite directions from its opposite ends whereby the outer rod ends are moved into and out of respective upper and lower casing sockets by turning movements of the handle, as well understood in the art. In the present instance, when the rods 6 are in locked'position the handle is vertically disposed with an edge adjacent to the free edge of the door.
For the purpose of the sealing feature of my invention, the handle 3 in its outer side or face,
preferably near its pivoted end, is provided with an outwardly opening recess or cabinets 1 having a side edge thereof adjacent to the casing 8 open, as shown at 9. The recess 1, in the present instance, is of circular form with its edge-opening occurring at one side of its center. At each end of theopening 9 is provided an overhanging lip or lug H].
A plate or disk ll of easily breakable fragile material, such for instance as glass, is positioned an edge projecting through the edge openin 9 beyond the side edge of the handle and toward the free edge of the door. This member I l is easily insertable into the recess back of the lips ID, as indicated by dotted lines locking part l3 which may constitute the shackle of a pad-lock I4, and also has engagement with ear I5 attached to and projecting outward from the casing 8. It is apparent that when a locking member is engaged with the fragil element II and with the ear IS, the handle cannot be swung to the left or in clockwise direction, in the present instance, to release the bolt member 6 from locking engagement with the easing without breaking the apertured edge of said which the member I3 is engaged, thus indicating that the cabinet has been opened. At the same time this sealing means for the door will not prevent an easy and rapid opening of the door should an emergency therefor arise. After such a breaking of the sealing element, a new element maybe substituted therefor, and thelock I 4 easily and quickly operated to lock it to the ear l5 and thus seal the door in closed position the same as before.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, as it is capable of numerous modifications and changes without departing from the spirit of the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is:
1. A means for sealing a door in closed relation to its casing, including a door lock control member movable in a plane substantially parallel to the door to unlock th door, a sealing connection between said member and the casing and including a fragile element replaceably carried by said member and a lock connecting said element and the casing when the control member is in doorlocking position, said breakable element being broken by movement of the control member from lookin to releasing position.
2. A means for sealing a door in closed relation to its casing, including a door lock control member carried by the door and movable in a lane substantially parallel to the door to effect an unlocking thereof, said member having a rea door unlocking movement of the control mem ber.
WILLIAM D. ROSSITER.
