Description

M. BRAND.
l BEER-MSK.
193,074, Patented July 17,1577.
N.PETERS, PHOTD-LITHOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON, D
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEo MICHAEL BRAND, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BEER-CASKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,074, dated July 17, 1877; application filed March 12, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL BRAND, of Chicago, in the county ot' Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in the Construction of Beer-Casks, of which the fol- -lowing is a'specification:
In breweries the large beer-casks in which the beer is stored in the ice-vaults are, at the time when the beer is drawn off into smaller kegs or barrels, subjected to a high pressure of compressed air, in order to force the beer from the vault into the rooms where it is filled into the smaller vessels. This vhigh pressure frequently causes the heads of these casks to give way.
In order to prevent accidents of this kind, and also for the purpose of allowing the cold air of the vault a passage through the center of the cask, I provide each of these casks with a tube or pipe, passing through the cenl ter, and coming out through the heads at each end of the cask. This tube is provided with screw-threads at each end, so that by means of gaskets, washers, and nuts, the same may be tightened and secured in a proper manner. Between the washer and the head I also place a piece of board, running across the pieces which form the heads of the cask, so that each head may be rmly kept in its place. The tube I make about three inches in diameter., more or less, according to the size of the cask. 1t may be made of iron, copper, brass,or any other metal; but I prefer galvanized-iron pipe.
The drawing shows a section of the tube, and illustrates one way in which it may be attached to the cask.
vA is the tube; B, the large cask. la is the piece ot board crossing the head-pieces. is the washer, and c represents the screw-nut. At c and d a tight joint is made by gaskets or otherwise.
The pipe may, however, be secured in any other known manner, as I do not desire to make any particular claim in that direction.
What I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the cask B with the tube A, cross-pieces k k, and the screw-nuts n o, constructed as shown and described, and
`for the purposes specified.
