(cue-9'7) This invention relates to improvements in hangers for doors, particularly the doors of box cars and relates especially to Wheeled hangers.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a hanger having a novel means of mounting a supporting wheel which facilitates the rapid replacement thereof when necessary. Another object of the invention is to provide a door hanger having a supporting roller mounted upon a pivot pin which pin is of a character to be turned to present a new wear sur-, face after one side thereof has become worn to such an extent that the ready operation of the door supported by the hanger is affected.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a door hanger having a plate portion which is attached to the door and a roller carrying portion which is detachably connected with the plate and which can be readily removed from the platewhen repair or. replace.- ment of the rollers or their; supporting trunnions is necessary, without removing the entire hanger from the door.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawing but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modificationsmark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.

' Figure 4 is a view in edge elevation of a form of the hanger designed for. use upon the bottom of a door. Referring now more particularly to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 findicatesa portion of a door structure to which the present hanger is shown attached, a trackw'ay in the form of ahaving a flange uponwhich the wheels of the M hanger may run.
The hanger embodying the present invention is indicated as a whole by the numeral 3 and as shown compriseslthe plate portion 4 having a re duced top extension 5 which is oiT-set from the plane of the plate and is of slightly increased thickness, as illustrated. This off-set top portion has a dove-tail groove 6 formed in and transversely of this inner face and the top portionof the plate 4 has a recessed portion 7 transversely of its upper face in which is mounted one side of an angle guard which is indicated generally by the numeral, 8. This guard 8 hasthe two spaced parallel side portions 9 and 10 and the right angularly disposed intermediateportion '11 connecting them} which intermediate portion is horizontally positioned when the hanger is attached to the door body 1. Theportion 11 of the angle guard positions upon the topedge of the door, as illustrated.
Disposed against the innerface of the head portion 5 of thehanger is the elongated flat head block 12, the ends of which extend beyond the side edges of the portion 5. The face 01' the head block 12 which abuts the portion 5' of the hanger carries a cleat 13, the longitudinal edges of which are beveled or under-cut so that the cleat may be inserted into the dove-tail slot 6.to efiect the securing connectionof the head block with the upper part .of the plate.
Each end of the head bl'o'ck12 is bifurcated to form the longitudinally extending slot 14 and the portions at each side of the slot are cut away from the bottom edges thereof to form the downwardly opening notches .15.
These notches are'of polygonal outline, being preferably, rectangular.
Positioned in each slot 14 is a wheel 16 which isiprovided with a central aperture 17 through which extends the round axle 18. A portion of each end of the ame 18 is of the same polygonal outline as the notches 15, as indicated at 19fand in the present case these ends or trunnion por} tions of the axles are square and designed to snuglyfit in the notches 15 when the wheelsld are in place. The head block 12 has a transverse threaded passage 20 therethrough and this passage at'the inner face of the block is counter-bored as at 21, and through thispassage is passed a bolt 22," the head of the bolt positioning against the outer side of the ,block, while .the shank engages the threads in the bore, thus securing the block against displacement. o
From the foregoing description it will be readily. apparent that in the assembly of the present hanger the block isalttached to the upper portion of the plate after the axles 18 have been placed in the wheels and the wheels inserted into their Since the notches 15 have theiriopen sides di-,
rected downwardly it will be readily apparent that the weight of the door will hold the axles firmly in place and it willalso be readily apparent that after the hangers have been in use and means for securing the block to a door body and the axles become worn upon the under side, the head block maybe removed and the axles taken 'out and given a quarter turn so as to bring Y a new or unworn surface into position'for use. This operation'may be continued until the axle has been turned three times after its initial installation. 'It will thus be apparent that witha hanger of this character the wheel supporting axles may be used {or a"considerably longer period than'in hangers of'other types and it will also be readily apparent thatthe changing of the'axles or replacement of theiwheels maybe accomplished easily and quickly and without the thereof.
i The channel portion 26 01 the bracket 24 has the inner face of its vertical side 28'provided with'a dove-tailgroove 29 in which is slidably engaged the cleat 30 which iscarried by'a roller block 31.
This roller block, 31' isslottedj at its ends like the block 12 of thevtophanger as indicated at 32 and in each of these slots is mounted a roller 33 .upon an axle 34. The ends of this axle 34 are of polygonal cross sectionahdesign like the axles 18, and these engage in suitable notches formed in the bottom edges ofthe portions of the block31'which border the slots 32; As will, of course, be readily apparent the axles '34 ca'n only be detached from the roller block 31by being moved downwardly and since the brackets are placed in such a manner that the rollers rest upon an underlying track 35, theweight of the 'door maintains the rollers and the axles in place;

Having thus described the invention, what is 1. A door hanger comprising a wheel block, an axle disposed transversely of and carried by the block, means coupling the axle with the block "whereby the axle may be turned to and held in any one of several positions of oscillation about its long axis, a wheel mounted upon the axle,
in position for the wheel to rest upon the top of a supporting track.
" 2. A door hanger comprising a plate body designed to be secured to a door and having a head portion arranged in off-set parallel relation thereto, said head'portion having a dovetail groove formed across its inner face, an elongated wheel block of a length greater than the width of said head and having a recess formed in each end and further having transverse notches across its lower edge, a cleat carried by'the wheel block for slidable engagement in said groove, a Wheel disposed in'each recess, and an axle extending through each wheel and having each end engaged in an adjacent notch.
3. A sliding door hanger, comprising a plate designed to be secured to a face of a door and having an integral oiT-set parallel head'portion designed to extend beyond the adjacent edge of the door and ofi-set from the adjacent face thereof, the inner face of said head being provided with a transverse dove-tail channel, an elongated block disposed to extend across the said face of the head and having downwardly opening recesses in-feach end thereof, a cleat formed longitudinally of the central portion of one side face of the block, said cleat being of dove-tail cross section to slidably position in said channel, wheel axles disposed transversely of each of the recesses of the block, a wheel in each recess and rotatably mounted on the axle therein, and means for securing said block against longitudinal movement upon said head.

A sliding door hangen comprising a plate designed to be secured to aface of a door and having an integral off-set parallel head portion designed to. extendbeyond the adjacent edge of the door and oiT-set from the adjacent face thereof, the inner face of said head being provided with a transverse dove-tail channel, an elongated block disposed to extend across the said face of the head and having downwardly opening recesses in each end thereof, a cleat formed longitudinally of the central portion of one side face of the block, said cleat being of dove tail cross section to slidably position in said channel, wheel axles disposed transversely of each of the recesses of the block, a wheel in each recess androtatably mounted on the axle therein, and means for securing said block against longitudinal movement upon said head, said off-set head having the portion connecting 'it with the plate forming a substantially right angular shoulder and said block having a longiabutting relation with said DEENY MORRIS BENNETT.
