a citizen of the United States, residing at Gladstone, in the county of Delta and State 'of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable and Interchangeable Butt-Pieces for Firearms, of which the following is a specification.
Experienced shooters consider it extremely important that a certain fixed length of reach between the shoulder and the trigger of a gun be maintained. According to weather conditions and locality, a hunter, or other shooter, changes from light to heavy clothing, or vice versa, which varies the length of reach between the shoulder and the trigger, and tends to disturb the handling of the piece, the ease of the shooter, and the proper trigger pull.
The present invention has for its object the provision of means whereby the shooter may compensate for difierences in reach when changing from light to heavy clothing, or the reverse.
WVith the foregoing object in view, the invention contemplates the provision of novel detachable and interchangeable butt pieces or plates, with or without a recoil pad, for the end of the stock of a fire arm, whereby a butt piece, of the proper thickness, with or without a recoil pad or cushion, may be'quickly and easily applied to the butt end of the stock to afford the requisite length of the gun stock to enable the shooter to meet varying conditions due to changing from light to heavy clothing, and the reverse.
My invention consists, first, of a butt plate secured to the stock of a fire arm, a detachable pad, and novel locking means carried by the plate and pad, respectively, whereby the pad may be applied to or removed from the plate by an oscillatory or rotary motion, enabling a pad of one thickness to be exchanged for a pad of another thickness, at will, to meet the requirements of the shooter; second, a butt plate adapted to be directly secured to the stock of a fire arm which is provided with are shaped undercut locking shoulders, and a locking device, a removable pad having shoulders corresponding to those on the butt plate and engageable with them by an oscillatory or rotary movement, together with arresting means, pivoting means, and lock engaging means, as set forth hereinafter, whereby a Specification of Letters Patent.

The embodiment of the invention which is shown in the accompanying drawings and is hereinafter described, is susceptible of modification and the disclosure is, therefore, to be considered as illustrative, rather than restrictive, of the scope of the invention.

Figure 1 is a vertical section, showing the invention applied to the stock of a firearm;
Fig. 2, is a detail side view of a solid pad of another or different thickness from that of the pad shown in Fig. 1;

A portion of the stock of a fire arm is shown at 1 and the screws by which the original or ordinary butt plate is attached thereto, appear at 2.
My improved butt plate 3 is preferably of through which the shanks of the screws 2 pass; consequently, the plate 8 may be applied to the stocks of guns whose screws 2 are spaced at different distances apart. The plate 3 has a raised portion 5 provided at its ends with arc-shaped undercut shoulders 6, 7. The raised portion 5 has a concavity 8. Contained within the concavity 8 is a looking spring 9 which is secured to the plate at 10 and has a locking end or shoulder 11. The locking end or shoulder 11 normally lies above the plane of the upper face of the raised portion 5. A stop 12 is provided on the plate 8. A pivot lug or pin 13 projects centrally of the plate 3.
In Fi 's. 1, 2, I have shown pads of different thicknesses which may be used with the plate 3, according to the requirements of the shooter. formed of metal, hard rubber, fiber, or other suitable material, or, as shown in Fig. 3, they may have cushioned recoil pads attached thereto.
Referring first to Figs. 1, 2, the rigid or solid pads 14, 15, shown in the respective figures, are of the same construction,
These pads may be rigid and having undercut shoulders 16, 17 toengage the shoulders 6, 7 on the plate 3, and pro vided with a central aperture 18 to receive the pivot pin 13. The said pads 1 15 have recesses 19 to receive the locking end of the spring 11 and are provided with a shoulder 20 against which the locking end 11 abuts. If desired, a wear plate may be provided to constitute the shoulder 20. A hole or aperture 21 is provided at a point that will overlie the locking end or shoulder 11 of the spring when the pad is in position. By introducing through the hole 21 a nail, match, or other suitable object, the locking end 11 of the spring may be depressed so that it will become disengaged from the shoulder 20, thus enabling the pad to be swung on the pivot 13 until the shoulders 16, 17 become disengaged from the shoulders 6, 7. A recess 22 is provided on the under face of the pad for the recep tion of the stop 12 which abuts the inner end of'the recess when the pad is in registerwith the plate 3.
In Fig. 3 the pad 15 is provided with recoil cushions 23; otherwise it is of the same form as shown in Figs. 1, 2.
Having removed the screws 2 and taken off the ordinary butt plate from the stock 1, the butt plate 3 is applied to the stock and the screws 2 are reinserted in their holes and are clamped down so that their heads lie below the outer surface of the plate 3. A pad of any form and thickness may now be applied to the plate 3 by causing the shoulders 16 and 17 to engage with the shoulders 6 and 7 by an oscillatory or rotary movement, after the lug or pin 13 has been inserted in the aperture 18 for the purpose of centering or pivoting the pad.
Immediately the pad has been brought into 4 alinement with the plate 3, the locking spring snaps into engagement with the shoulder 20 and, at the same time, the stop 12 engages the inner end of the recess 22. The parts are then securely locked together. \Vhen the shooter desires to use a pad of another thickness or kind, he inserts any suitable implement, such as a nail, match, or other device, through the hole 21 and de presses the locking end 11 of the spring, whereupon the pad may be swung around on the pivot 13 until the shoulders 16 and 17 are disengaged from the shoulders 6 and 7. The desired substitute pad may then be applied to the plate 3.
WVhat I claim is:
1. The combination with the butt of the stock of a fire arm which is provided with arc-shaped undercut locking shoulders, of a detachable butt pad or piece which has arcshaped undercut shoulders adapted to be engaged with, or disengaged from, the shoulders aforesaid by an oscillatory or rotary movement, and means for detachably locking the butt pad or piece to the stock when alined therewith.
2. An attachment for the butt of a fire arm stock comprising a butt plate adapted to be secured to the stock and provided with arc-shaped shoulders, and a detachable butt pad or piece having arcshaped shoulders corresponding to those on the butt plate and adapted to be engaged therewith, or disengaged therefrom by an oscillatory or rotary movement, and a releasable lock for securing the butt pad or piece to the butt plate.
3. An attachment for the butt of a fire arm stock comprising a butt plate adapted for connection to the fire arm butt, and provided with arc-shaped under-cut shoulders and a pivot pin or lug, a detachable butt 'pad or piece having undercut arc-shaped shoulders adapted to engage the shoulders on the butt plate, said butt pad or piece having an aperture to receive the pivot pin or lug, a stop for limiting the swing of the butt pad or piece, a locking leaf spring carried by the butt plate, said butt pad or piece having a shoulder adapted to be engaged by the locking leaf spring, and also provided with an aperture through which an implement may be interposed to disengage the locking leaf spring from said shoulder.
