IMPROVEMENT IN TOY NOAH'S ARKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,001, dated July 10, 1877; application tiled December 18, 1876. l

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE H. IRELAND, of Springfield, inthe county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toy Arks, which improvements are fully set forth in the following speciflcation and accompanying drawm gArks as now constructed consist of a boxlike structure with a pitch roof or cover, one portion being hinged at the ridge. The interiorof the ark is one open space. The filling consists of wooden animals and people intended to represent Noah and his fellowinmates of the ark. As it would add 'greatly to the expense of the arks to fill them up completely with animals, about three-fourths of the space in the ark is filled with paper or similar packing and the remaining space on top with animals. My invention utilizes this Waste space, and makes the ark more instructive and amusing.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a vertical view of my improved ark, with part of one side removed to s how the interior. Fig. 2 is a plan view, a cross-section of Fig. 1, taken on the line x m.

The same letters refer to corresponding parts.

A represents the base; B, walls; C, roof; D, floor which divides the ark into upper and lower rooms; E, panorama, which is attached to, moved by, and rolls upon, the rollers F F. This panorama has printed, or otherwise suitably attached thereto, a brief description and history of the ark, and pictures of Noah, his family, and animals.

G is a door or window to view the panorama through. It is provided with a plate, H, of glass or mica.

J is a rin g through which the string M passes. L is a dove, made, preferably, of cast metal, with a ring or loop in its back through which the string M passes. The bill is also made loop-shaped.

The dove is operated thus: The string M passes around a ring, or any round smooth object-as a chair-rail-in a distant part of the room. The dove is tied to the string M through the ring in the back. The child at the ark pulls the string, which slips aroundV l and carries with it the dove to a person stationed at the opposite end of the string,I who unfastens the dove from the string and places a leaf, twig, or other object designed to represent the olive-branch, in the loop-shaped bill of the dove. The' string M is then passed through the loop in the back of the dove, and it is allowed to slide, by gravity, to the ark, making a fair imitation of a bird flying.

The speed of the dove may be hastened or retarded according as the remote end of the string M is raised or depressed.

K represents the wooden animals before mentioned in the upper room of the ark.

The rollers F F I prefer to have extend above the roof of the ark, and to be. operated by means of the thumb and linger; but they may terminate even with the roof, and be -turned by a removable handle, as in ordinary panoramas.

It will be understood4 that when the panorama is all wound upon one roller, the opposite one is to be used to move it by.

It is evident the door G could be extended the entire length of the ark, or doors could be added or substituted at the ends of the ark; also, that the panorama E `might have other devices Vupon it than those named without departing from the spirit of my invention.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with ay toy ark, substantially as described, of the partition-door D, roolers VF F, panorama E, door G, .and transparent plate H.

2. The combination, with a toy ark, of the ring J, string M, and dove L, for the purpose substantially as described.
