KEY OR SLIDER FOR AUTOMATIC FASTENERS AND THE LIKE Original Filed Sept. 7. 1928 w gwuewtoz 6 I Patented Oct. 3, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE KEY OR SLIDER FOR AUTOMATIC FASTEN- ERS AND THE LIKE Pennsylvania Application September 7, 1928, Serial No. 304,409 Renewed January 12, 1932 12 Claims.
My present invention relates to keys or sliders for operating flexible, automatic fastening devices and the like of the types commonly employed on shoes, bags, garments and other devices, and aims to devise articles of the general character specified which are simple in construction, consisting of relatively few parts, which may be readily and economically fabricated and assembled, and which are accurate, convenient. and
o eflicient in operation. Other objects and advantages of the devices of the present invention will in part be pointed out in detail hereinafter. and will in part be obvious to those skilled in the art to which the present invention relates.
In the accompanying specification I shall describe, and in the annexed drawing show, an illustrative embodiment of the devices of the present invention. It is, however, to be clearly understood that my invention is not limited to the specific embodiment thereof herein shown and described for purposes of illustration only.
Referring now to the drawing, wherein I have illustrated the aforesaid illustrative embodiment of the present invention:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a blank for keys or sliders made in accordancewith the principles of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the completed key or slider made from the blank shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing;
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the key or slider shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing;
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same;
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same taken along line 55 of Fig. 2 of the draw- 8;
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same taken along line 6-6 of Fig. 4 of the draw- Fig. 7 is a cross sectional view of the same taken along line 7-7 of Fig. 2 of the drawing;
Fig. 8 is a cross sectional view of the same taken along line 8-8 of Fig. 3 of the drawing; and
Fig. 9 is a front view of the operating member for the slider.
As shown in Fig. 1 the complete slider blank, generally designated by 10, includes a blank portion 11 for forming a main body portion constituting one wing or plate of the slider and having 50 marginal portions 12 and 13. The blank portions and 21 form auxiliary segmental body members, each in the form of a segment or portion of a wing of the slider and together constitute another wing or plate of the slider'having marginal portions 22 and 23. The blank 10 also includes the blank portion for forming a handle supporting member, and spacing blanks 40, 41 and 42 which ultimately firmly secure the slider wings or plates together in spaced relation to form divergent channels or passages for .receiving interlocking fastener elements.
It will be noted that the blank 10 is made in a single piece. It will also be noted that the handlesupporting member blank portion 30 is intermediate the auxiliary segmental body member blank portions 20 and 21. It will also appear that the spacing means blank portions 40, 41 and 42 are intermediate the main body member blank portion 11 and the auxiliary segmental body member blank portions 20 and 21 and the handle-supporting member blank portion 30, respectively. The spacing means blank portions 40 and 41 are. as shown, associated and integral with the auxiliary segmental body member blank portions 20 and 21, respectively. On the other hand, the spacing blank portion 42 is intermediate the main body member blank portion 11 and the handle-supporting member blank portion 30. I have not shown the portion from which the handle or tab for operating the finished key or slider is made, the same being illustrated in Figure 9 of the drawing.
In forming the key or slider constituting the aforesaid illustrative embodiment of the present invention from the blank illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing, I may proceed in any suitable manner, for example, as follows:
I may first strike up the marginal portions 12 and 13 of the main body member blank portion 11 and the marginal portions 22 and 23 of the auxiliary segmental body member blank portions 20 and 21, respectively. The marginal portion 12 is intended to cooperate with the marginal portion 22, while the marginal portion 13 is intended to cooperate with the marginal portion 23, to define a plurality of fastener-receiving channels, all as will readily appear to those skilled in the art to which the present invention relates.
I may then fold the portions of the blank along the lines a and b, and thereafter the portions of the blank along the lines 0 and d, and finally along the lines 8 and i, so that the auxiliary segmental body member blank portions 20 and 21 will overlie the main body member blank portion 11, with the tabs 40 and 41, constituting extensions of the spacing means blank portions 40 and 41, respectively, entering the slots 11' and 11", respectively, located between the ends of the main body member blank portion 11. The tabs 40 and 41' may now be spread or slightly folded over on the opposite or outer face of the main body member blank portion 11 to lock the auxiliary segmental body member blank portions 20 and 21 in place and also the spacing septums and 41 securely inthe desired positions. Thus the septums or spacing means 40 and 41 are attached to both slider wings at points between the ends of the wings by the lugs 40' and 41' and by being integrally joined to the members 20 and 21 at points opposite to 40' and 41'.
Before the latter series of operations has been performed, I prefer that the tabs 20' and 21', constituting integral'extensions of the auxiliary segmental body member blank portions 20 and 21, respectively, shall have been bent or folded upwardly. The handle-supporting member blank portion 30 may now be provided with a loop portion 30' and may be brought down over the overlying auxiliary segmental body member blank portions 20 and 21 so that the slot 30" may be brought down over the tabs 20' and 21' which should preferably now be contiguous or close together. The tabs 20 and 21' may now be spread or folded over the outer face of the handle-supporting member blank portion 30, thus reinforcing the auxiliary segmental body .member blank portions 20 and 21 and the handle-supporting member blank portion 30.
It may here be stated that the handle-supporting member blank portion 30 may be made as long as desired so ,that the loop 30 may be given suitable dimensions. For example, where it is desired that the handle proper, here designated by reference character 50, shall have little or no sliding movement along the completed key or slider but shall be practically pivoted to the loop portion 30 of the handle-supporting member 30, the loop 30' need be only of small diameter. On the other hand, where it is desired that the handle or operating member shall have a substantial sliding movement along the finished key or slider, the loop 30 may be made longer and may have the desired dimensions for this purpose, in which case the handle-supporting member blank portion 30 can be made sufficiently long.
The handle 50 itself comprises the main body portion 51 and the plurality of inturned portions 52 and 53 which are adapted to be sprung or otherwise suitably inserted into the loop portion 30' of the handle-supporting member 30, or else the handle 50 may be made with a slot adjacent its top through which may be threaded the loop portion 30 during the assembly of the key. The main body portion 51 of the handle or operating member 50 may carry any suitable trademark, patent or other markings, as will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the present invention relates.
This completes the description of the aforesaid illustrative embodiment of the present invention. The construction of said embodiment will, it is believed, be clear from the foregoing description. The manner of using the device will, it is believed, likewise be clear from the foregoing description. In this connection it is only necessary to state that the completed key or slider, generally designated by reference character 60, will provide a plurality of divergent fastener-recei ing channels 61 defined by the cooperating marginal portions 12 and 13, and 22 and 23 of the main body member 11 and the auxiliary segmental body members 20 and 21, respectively. The portions 40 and 41 will provide spacing members or septums which will likewise be divergent and which will assist in defining the fastener-receiving channels 61.
The device will be found to be very rugged in construction, and highly efficient and otherwise satisfactory in use. may be readily and economically fabricated and assembled, consisting of very few parts. Other advantages and superiorities of the devices of the present invention will readily occur to those skilled in the art to which the present invention relates.
