Description

Oct. 3, 1933. w PADGETT 1,928,843
WRENCH Filed June 6, 1931 Patented Oct. 3, 1933 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE My invention consists in a new and useful improvement in wrenches and is designed to provide a wrench in which the curved jaws are caused to grip the rod or pipe on which the wrench is used by the manipulation of the handle. My improved wrench has one jaw pivotally mounted on the handle and the second jaw pivotally mounted on the first jaw and having a pivoted link connecting it with the handle. The particularly novel feature of my invention is the means which I provide whereby the first jaw may be adjustably pivoted on the handle so that the wrench may be adapted to operate upon rods or pipes of differing diameters. A particular ad- 15 vantage of my improved wrench is that the parts are so designed and disposed that the jaws may be brought into their several open positions to be applied to the work, while they are disposed alongside of the handle instead of extending beyond the handle, as in the ordinary type of wrench. For working in constricted spaces, this affords a great improvement over the ordinary type.
I have illustrated in the drawing and have hereinafter fully'described one specific embodiment of my invention, but it is to be distinctly understood that I do not consider my invention limited to said specific embodiment, but refer for its scope to the claims appended hereto.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my device.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 33 of Fig.1.
Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
My improved wrench has the handle 1 provided. at one end with a yoke 2 in which is pivoted by the pin 3 one end of the link 4 having at its other end the yoke 5 in which is pivoted by the pin 6 the arm 7 of the jaw 8 of the wrench. The other jaw 9 of the wrench has a yoke 10 in which is pivoted the arm '7 by the pin 11. The jaw 9 also has a yoke 12 pivoted to the handle 1 by the pin 13. This yoke 12 is so designed and disposed that the link 4 passes therethrough. The yoke 45 12 is provided on each of its arms with a series of circular holes 14 from which extend slots connected by the slot 16. It is to be noted, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, that the round pin 13 is flattened on one side, at 17, thus preventing rotation of the pin 13 in the handle 1. The holes 14 are of a diameter suflicient to allow the yoke 12 to move about the pin 13 when the pin 13 is in one of the holes 14, but the width of the slots 15 is such that the yoke 12 must be moved to 55 bring the slots 15 in line with the flattened side 17 to permit the pin 13 to pass through the slots 15.
From the foregoing description of the details of construction of my device, its use and operation will be obvious. The yoke 12 is adjusted relative to the handle 1 to place the pin 13 in the proper hole 14 to position the jaws 8 and 9 in such relation as to provide the proper space for the wrench to be applied to the particular rod or pipe to be gripped. When the jaws 8 and 9 have been fitted about the rod or pipe, the handle 1 (as illustrated in Fig. 1) is moved toward the left, thus acting as a lever about the fulcrum provided by the pin 13, operating the link 4 and arm '7 to force the jaw 8 toward the jaw 9 to grip the rod or pipe.
Having described my invention, what I claim 1s:
1. In a wrench, the combination of a handle; a jaw provided with a yoke about said handle, each side of said yoke having a series of circular holes, the holes of the two series being aligned, a slot extending from each hole and a connecting slot for each series of slots; a pin non-rotatably positioned in said handle and passing through said yoke, the yoke and pin being so designed and related that the yoke is rotatable about the pin when the pin is in any one of said holes, and non-rotatable about said pin when the pin is in any one of said slots; a second jaw pivoted to said first jaw; and a link pivoted to said second jaw and said handle.
2. In a wrench, the combination of a handle; a bifurcated plate about said handle, each arm of said plate having a slot, a series of slots extending therefromand a circular hole at the other end of each of the extension slots, the diameter of the holes being greater than the width of the extension slots; a pin non-rotatably mounted in said handle so as to pass through the openings in the plate, said pin having such configuration, in cross-section, as to permit the plate to rotate about the pin when the pin is positioned in any one of the pairs of holes, and prevent the plate from rotating about the pin when the pin is posi- 100 tioned in any one of the pairs of slots; a jaw on said plate; a second jaw pivoted to said plate; and a link pivoted to said second jaw and said handle.
