corporation of Ohio Application January 16, 1932 iSeriaLNo. 587.101
' "l Claims. (c1. "21-1 1ss) This invention relates to a display stand attachment whichis adapted to be made-of corrugated paper, strawboard' or similar sheet material and to be used in connection with a combination shipping case and display stand of the type shown and described in my earlier applica tion,. Serial No. 580,270, filedDecember 11, 1931, and issued. February 7', 1933, as Patent No.
The. general object of the invention is to provide an attachment or accessory which may be packed and shipped fiat within the combined shipping case and display stand of the. character referred to and which, when set up within the'opened end of the shipping case, forms a series of successive steps or shelves on which articles may be supportedand displayed most effectively; Y.
The invention will be more parti ularly described in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View ofv a shipping casein connection with which the invention may be used; I i Figure 2 is a perspective iew of the shipping case With the top out off;
Figure '3 is a perspective view'oi the same case folded .to receive the attachment which consth tutesthe supporton whichthe goods are to be displayed; f
Figure 4 is a perspective View of the attachment or insert folded fiat for shipment;
Figure 5. is a rearjperspective view of the insert I or attachment set up;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the display stand with the insert in place;
Figure 7 is a front perspective view of the insert; and
Figure 8 is a similar view showing the use of additional inserts for providing additional shelves.
The combined shipping case and stand in connection with which my invention is used is formed from a single blank folded to form the.
four sides 10, 11, 12 and 13, the meeting edges of the blank being usually bound together by cambric tape or other-suitable material, as indicated at 15, to meet railroad classifications for shipping containers. The blank is also provided with end flaps 16 which are folded to form the ends of the box.
When a shipment has been received in this shipping case, in order to form a display stand, the top 21 should be carefully cut away, as'indicated in Fig. 2, the line for cutting, together with thereof.
directions being printed on the outside of. the
standnfold lines 23, 24 and 25 are scored on the inside of the panels l1, l2 and 13 respectively, be-.
fore the blank is folded to form the case. In order to facilitate the conversion, the panel 12 is also provided with diagonal score lines 26 extending frem the ends of the fold line 24 to the-upper end of the panel-12 midway between the sides After the top 21 has been removed and the contents of the case taken out, the upper por- .tion of the panel 12 may be folded inwardly across the case, as shown at 27 in -Fig.- 3,to form a horizontal-seat for receiving the insert which supports the goods for display. The upperpar t of the rear panel 10 then servesas a back for'the seat, asindicated at-28, while the sides are douledabout the lines 23 and 25 to a shape as shown at 29 and 30. V
The attachment or, insert, to which the present invention relates, may be folded flatas shown in Fig.- 4 and shipped within the case illustrated triangular 7 in Fig. 1. This insert is made from a single rec- .39
'tangular sheet which is creased on the lines 31 suitable material, which constitutes a' hinge member connecting the two panels. The insert isalsocreased transversely as indicated 'by the lines 34, 35 and 36; so that when the insert" is set up, as-shown in-Fi'gs; 5; 6 and '7, it forms steps or shelves 37 and 38 and risers 39 and 40. insert is of such width that it fits rather tightly between the sides of the shipping case and it is desirable, though not necessary, to bind the edges of the two plies together adjacent the fold lines 34 and 35 with tape as indicated at 41.
It is possible to provide additional steps and risers by providing additional inserts 42 and 43, as shown in Fig. 8. Each of these additional inserts is made in the same manner as the insert shown in Fig. '7, but the blank from which it is 1100 made is only half as long and its steps and risers are only half as wide as those of the first insert. After the shipping case has been prepared as shown in Fig. 3, the insert may be set up merely by taking hold of its two ends and folding it so 105 that the two panels of the rear ply are substan- The it in the shipping case, it is held in position not only by its engagement with the sides 29 and 30 but by the weight of the goods as they are supported on the steps or shelves 3'7 and 38. The additional inserts 42 and 43 will be held in position in the same manner. Thus theshipping case may be very quickly and easily converted into a display stand on which goods may be most effectively displayed.
While I have shown and described the invention specifically in its preferred form, it is understood that it is not limited thereby but includes all such modifications as may fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a display stand formed with a seat having upright back and sides, an insert therefor comprising a sheet folded double and fitting between said sides, the rear ply of said insert including panels" for facing said seat and back respectively, the front ply thereof being creased to form two steps and two risers when the insert is set up, and an additional insert for each step of the first insert, each additional insert being similar in construction to the first insert except that its steps and risers are approximately half as wide.
2. In a display stand formed with a seat having upright back and sides, an insert therefor comprising a sheet folded double and fitting between said sides, the ends'of said sheet meeting substantially midway of the rear ply of the insert, and a hinge member joining said ends, thus constituting two hingedly connected panels for facing said seat and back respectively, the front plyof the insert being creased to form two steps and two risers when the insert is set in position, and an additional insert for each step of the first insert, each additional insert being similar in construction to the first insert except that its steps and risers are approximately half as wide. 7 3. In a display stand formed with a seat having upright back and sides, an insert therefor comprising a sheet folded double and fitting between said sides, the ends of said sheet meeting substantially midway of the rear ply of the insert, and a hinge member joining said ends, thus constituting two hingedly connected panels for facing said seat and back respectively, the front ply of the insert being creased to form two steps and two risers when the insertis set in position, the edges of the lower step and of the upper riser being bound to the corresponding edges of the rear panel, and an additional insert for each step of the first insert, each additional insert being similar in construction to the first insert except that its steps and risers are approximately half as wide.
4. An insert for the purpose dsecribed, comprising a sheet with end panels folded rearwardly and meeting, each of said end panels being substantially equal in area to one-fourth of the sheet, a hinge member joining the meeting ends, the front ply of the sheet thus folded being creased transversely in such a manner as to form two steps and two risers when said end panels are disposed substantially at right angles to each other, the edges of the upper riser and of the lower step being closely bound to the corresponding edges of said end panels.
5. In a display stand formed with a seat having upright back and sides, an insert therefor comprising a single sheet with, upper and lower end panels folded rearwardly to constitute facings for the back and seat of the stand respectively, the front portion of the sheet being creased to define two steps and two risers when the insert is set up, the side edges of the lower step and the upper riser being bound to the corresponding edges of the rearwardly folded panels.
6. In a display stand formed with a seat having upright back and sides, an insert therefor comprising a single sheet with upper and lower end panels folded rearwardly to constitute facings for the back and seat of the stand respec: tively, the combined area of said panels being substantially one-half of the total area of the sheet, the front half of the sheet being creased to define two steps and two risers when the insert is set up, the side edges of the lower step and the upper riser being bound to the corresponding edges of the rearwardly folded panels.
7. In a display stand formed with a seat, having upright back and sides, an insert therefor comprising a single sheet with upper and lower end panels folded rearwardly and meeting to constitute facings for the back and seat of the stand respectively, and a hinge connection between the meeting edges of the panels, the front portion of the sheet being creased to define two steps and two risers when the insert is set up, the side edges of the lower step and the upper riser being bound to the corresponding edges of the rearwardly folded panels.
